Before buying Invesco Mortgage Capital Inc. (NYSE: IVR), check more than its dividend yield. Compare the share price with reported book value, examine leverage and repo-funding liquidity, assess rate and spread risks, and test the dividend against results over several reporting periods. The figures below are dated company disclosures—not current market quotes or forecasts—and should be refreshed against the latest filings and dividend announcements before you trade.

What IVR owns—and why a high yield needs context

Invesco Mortgage Capital is an externally managed mortgage real estate investment trust (REIT). It invests in, finances, and manages mortgage-backed securities and other mortgage-related assets. The company has no employees of its own; Invesco Advisers, Inc., an Invesco Ltd. subsidiary, manages it.

At December 31, 2025, IVR reported Agency residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities (MBS). Its 2025 annual report also describes investments during the periods covered in non-Agency MBS, to-be-announced (TBA) forward contracts, real-estate-related ventures, and U.S. Treasury securities. Portfolio mix can change, so use the latest filing to understand what the company owns now.

A mortgage REIT’s results can be affected by the difference between income earned on its mortgage assets and the cost of financing them, as well as changes in asset values and hedges. Leverage can amplify both gains and losses. A large dividend yield, by itself, does not show that the dividend is sustainable: the yield can rise when the share price falls, and the company can change its distributions.

Start with the date-stamped figures

These figures are from Invesco Mortgage Capital disclosures for the dates shown. In particular, the yield is a point-in-time calculation, not a promise of future income.

Measure Reported figure Date and what it means
Total investment portfolio $8.2 billion June 30, 2026; company overview statistic.
Total stockholders’ equity $990.3 million June 30, 2026; company overview statistic.
Book value per common share $8.03 June 30, 2026; down 7.9% from December 31, 2025. IVR attributed the decrease mainly to unrealized investment losses, declared dividends, and expenses, partly offset by net interest income and derivative gains.
GAAP debt-to-equity 6.3x June 30, 2026.
Economic debt-to-equity 7.5x June 30, 2026; includes $1.2 billion of TBA positions at implied cost basis.
Annualized dividend yield 18.2% June 30, 2026; IVR calculated this as the most recent monthly dividend multiplied by 12 and divided by the closing share price on that date. It is neither a forecast nor a guarantee.
Common dividends declared $0.36 per share in Q2 2026; $0.72 per share in H1 2026 Through June 30, 2026; past declarations do not establish future payments.
Net interest income $30.1 million in Q2 2026; $57.148 million in H1 2026 Quarters and six months ended June 30, 2026.
Net income available to common stockholders $31.842 million in Q2 2026; $8.721 million in H1 2026 Quarters and six months ended June 30, 2026; read the filing’s preferred-dividend and non-GAAP reconciliations when assessing coverage.
Common shares outstanding 107,640,417 July 31, 2026.
Management fee 1.50% per annum of stockholders’ equity 2025 Form 10-K; the calculation uses prior-quarter average month-end equity subject to the adjustments described in the filing.

Check book value against the price you would pay

Calculate the premium or discount

Compare IVR’s current market price with the latest reported book value per common share. A simple calculation is: (share price ÷ book value per common share) − 1. A positive result is a premium to reported book value; a negative result is a discount. Use a share price and book value that are both clearly dated, and check for a more recent company filing before relying on the June 30, 2026 figure above.

Understand what book value can—and cannot—tell you

Book value is not a guaranteed amount shareholders would receive in a liquidation. Mortgage securities and hedges are marked to fair value, estimates depend on market inputs, and the costs and availability of financing can affect outcomes. Look at the direction of book value as well as the latest level, and read management’s explanation of material changes. IVR reported that book value per common share fell 7.9% between December 31, 2025 and June 30, 2026, with the drivers summarized in the table.

Assess leverage and the ability to fund the portfolio

Compare leverage on a like-for-like basis

IVR reported 6.3x GAAP debt-to-equity and 7.5x economic debt-to-equity at June 30, 2026. The economic measure includes TBA positions at implied cost basis; the company says this measure is intended to help investors understand at-risk leverage and compare with mortgage REITs that use a similar calculation. When comparing companies, check each definition rather than treating differently calculated ratios as equivalent.

Look beyond the ratio to repo and collateral risk

Mortgage REITs commonly use repurchase agreements (repo) to finance securities. IVR’s annual report explains that repo lenders can revalue collateral and require additional collateral, known as a margin call. If the company cannot meet collateral requirements, its financial position can deteriorate quickly. Review the latest filing for liquidity, unencumbered assets, financing maturities, counterparties, and collateral information. A leverage ratio alone does not show how much room the company has to manage a funding shock.

Understand how rates, spreads, prepayments, and hedges affect results

Separate interest-rate risk from spread risk

According to IVR’s 2025 Form 10-K, short-term repurchase agreements are periodically refinanced at market rates. If funding costs rise faster than income on fixed-rate investments adjusts, the financing spread can come under pressure. MBS can also lose value when their spreads widen relative to benchmark rates, even if risk-free rates do not rise.

Read the sensitivity scenarios as models, not predictions

Hedges are intended to mitigate some exposures, but they may not offset asset and financing changes precisely; hedge instruments can also add volatility. Mortgage prepayments influence asset cash flows and premium amortization, and their pace is difficult to predict. Read the latest filing’s parallel interest-rate and spread scenarios, including the assumptions behind them. They are model estimates, not forecasts of what will happen to IVR’s book value or earnings.

As one illustration of how different components can move at once, IVR reported $21.2 million of unrealized MBS losses in Q2 2026 and $76.6 million in H1 2026, attributing them to increased interest rates. Q2 net interest income was $30.1 million. These are separate income-statement components; a single quarter’s figures should not be treated as a recurring earnings run-rate.

Judge the dividend by more than the headline yield

Distinguish a declared payment from a yield calculation

The 18.2% annualized yield reported by IVR on June 30, 2026 used the then-most-recent monthly dividend multiplied by 12 and the closing share price on that date. It is not an indication that the same payment will continue for a year. Because the share price is in the denominator, a falling price can make the quoted yield look higher even as investors experience a price decline.

Examine several reporting periods and the right earnings measures

Review declared dividends alongside net interest income, net income available to common stockholders, realized and unrealized investment results, preferred claims, and financing conditions over multiple periods. Q2 2026 net income available to common stockholders was $31.842 million, while the H1 figure was $8.721 million; those period totals are not interchangeable with net interest income. Read the filing’s preferred-dividend and non-GAAP reconciliations before drawing a coverage conclusion, and do not infer future payments from the Q2 or H1 dividend declarations.

REIT tax rules generally require a company to distribute at least 90% of its REIT taxable income annually to maintain REIT qualification. That requirement concerns taxable income; it does not guarantee a particular common-stock dividend or mean reported accounting earnings equal distributable cash.

Review management, fees, and the limits of Agency backing

Understand the external-management arrangement

IVR’s manager supplies its officers and personnel, and the company reports that it has no employees. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes an annual management fee of 1.50% of stockholders’ equity, calculated using prior-quarter average month-end equity subject to specified adjustments. The filing also describes a termination fee in certain circumstances. Read the management agreement, related-party transactions, board oversight, and fee incentives to understand how the arrangement affects shareholders.

Best Value

Do not confuse securities backing with shareholder protection

IVR’s strategy page describes specified Agency MBS as having implicit or explicit backing through Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, or Ginnie Mae. That support relates to those mortgage securities; it is not a guarantee of IVR common shares, their market price, or their dividend. Shareholders remain exposed to leverage, funding, interest-rate and spread changes, prepayments, hedging, valuation, and governance risks.

Use a consistent framework to compare mortgage REITs

When comparing IVR with another mortgage REIT, check the same categories for each company instead of ranking them by headline yield alone:

  • Portfolio: asset mix and credit support, including whether the company holds Agency or non-Agency securities.
  • Book value: the latest value per common share, its direction, and management’s explanation of changes.
  • Leverage: GAAP leverage and an economic measure defined consistently, including how TBA positions are treated.
  • Funding and liquidity: repo and other funding, maturities, counterparties, collateral, and available liquidity.
  • Market exposures: modeled sensitivity to rates and spreads, prepayment exposure, and hedge approach.
  • Distribution and costs: dividend changes and relevant earnings measures, management fees, and governance arrangements.

Turn the checks into a pre-trade decision

  1. Refresh the disclosures. Find IVR’s latest SEC filing and dividend announcement, then note their dates. Do not treat June 2026 metrics as current if newer figures have been reported.
  2. Compare price and book value. Calculate the premium or discount using a current share price and the latest reported book value per common share. Investigate any recent book-value decline or large gap rather than assuming it will close.
  3. Trace leverage to funding capacity. Review both GAAP and consistently defined economic leverage, then examine repo exposure, collateral, liquidity, and financing terms.
  4. Stress-test the income story. Read rate and spread scenarios, hedge disclosures, prepayment assumptions, and results across multiple periods.
  5. Evaluate the distribution and governance. Review dividend declarations against relevant earnings information, preferred claims, the management fee, and related-party disclosures.
  6. Decide whether the risks fit your situation. The company filings do not establish a personalized recommendation, independent fair value, current analyst consensus, or suitability for a particular investor. Your time horizon, income needs, risk tolerance, diversification, and tax circumstances matter.

If you decide to place an order, use a brokerage account that can trade NYSE-listed shares and review its execution fees, order controls, account minimums, and eligible account types. This is a practical trading consideration, not an endorsement of a particular brokerage.
