Before you buy, verify five things in order: the exact device requirements, the accessory’s connector and specifications, the certification required in your country, the seller and listing, and the item’s condition and recall history. If any of those checks cannot be completed, the lower price is not a reliable bargain.
This checklist applies to wall chargers, USB-C and Lightning cables, power adapters, hubs and similar accessories bought new, refurbished or second-hand. The examples of certification marks below are country-specific; always apply the rules of the country where the product will be used.

1. Identify the exact accessory and the device it must support
Start with the device, not the sale price. Write down the model number, connector type and charging requirements before opening a shopping page. A connector that fits physically may still be electrically incompatible or may not support the feature you need.

Record the device requirements
- Device model: include the precise generation or model code where the manufacturer provides one.
- Connector: note whether the device uses USB-C, Lightning, a barrel connector or another interface.
- Input requirements: record the voltage and current shown on the device, its original charger or the manufacturer’s specification.
- Required function: decide whether you need charging only, data synchronization, video output, networking or another capability.
For a wall charger or adapter, compare the listed output voltage and current with the device’s requirements. Health Canada gives a simple example: a 19-volt laptop requires a charger providing 19 volts. Do not treat a matching plug shape as proof that the electrical specifications match.

Separate “fits” from “works”
Product headlines often use broad phrases such as “fast charging,” “universal” or “compatible with all devices.” Those phrases do not identify the supported models, output specifications or certification. Open the technical specification section and confirm the exact device family and functions you need. If the listing does not state them, ask the seller or choose a listing with complete documentation.
2. Check the certification required where you live
Certification is both local and product-specific. A mark that is relevant in one country may not satisfy the requirements in another, and a cable certification is not a universal approval for every charger or accessory.
Wall-powered products
For electrical products that plug into an outlet in Canada, Health Canada names CSA, cUL and cETL as examples of appropriate Canadian electrical certification marks. Its guidance says the mark should appear on the product itself, not only on the box. Health Canada states: “Do not buy electrical products that plug into a power outlet without a Canadian electrical certification mark, such as CSA, cUL, or cETL.” That sentence is specific to Canadian requirements; shoppers elsewhere should check their own national regulator and the product category’s rules.

A listing that shows only a box, a cropped label or a generic “CE” statement is not enough to establish compliance for your country. Ask for a clear photograph of the product label and compare the model information on the label with the listing.
USB-C cable claims
USB-IF describes a USB Type-C cable certification program for eligible cable assemblies. Its guidance says the program’s logo must be on the cable and that compliance is verified through testing by a test laboratory. This does not mean every USB-C cable must carry the logo, nor does it certify every USB-C charger, hub or power brick. Treat the logo as one claim to verify alongside the cable’s stated capabilities and your device’s requirements.

Lightning accessories
Apple’s MFi guidance concerns Lightning accessories. Apple recommends certified accessories carrying the MFi badge and provides packaging and connector features that buyers can inspect. MFi is not a universal certification for USB-C products, wall chargers or unrelated accessories. A badge should prompt verification of the actual model and seller rather than replacing those checks.
Do not confuse a logo with proof of authenticity
Counterfeiters can print a certification symbol or copy a program badge. Certification is useful only when the mark belongs to the correct product type, appears on the item where the certifying organization requires it and matches the model and manufacturer information. Missing or inconsistent markings justify stopping the purchase until the claim is confirmed.
3. Examine the seller and the listing before paying
Discounted accessories are safer to evaluate when the seller is identifiable and the listing contains enough information to check. Health Canada advises reviewing seller details, listing photos and descriptions. INTERPOL identifies unfamiliar sellers, unusually low prices, poor or unusual packaging, blurred or discolored printing and missing certification labels as warning signs. None of these clues alone proves an item is counterfeit, but each increases the need for verification.
Seller checks
- Look for a legal business name, physical or mailing address and a working contact method.
- Check whether the listing identifies the actual model rather than using only a stock photo or a broad product family name.
- Determine who will handle returns, warranty claims and safety complaints: the manufacturer, an authorized retailer or an individual marketplace seller.
- Read the condition description and return terms before ordering, especially for open-box, refurbished and used items.
- Compare the seller’s description with the manufacturer’s current compatibility information when the accessory is brand-specific.
Listing and packaging checks
- Zoom in on photographs of the product label, plug, connector, cable and certification mark.
- Look for misspellings, inconsistent fonts, blurred logos, discolored printing or specifications that change between the title and the technical section.
- Check whether the model number on the item, box and listing is consistent.
- Be cautious when the only image showing a safety mark is a box image and the seller will not show the item itself.
- Confirm that the packaging describes the same connector, output and supported devices as the product you are buying.
UL Research Institutes’ “Safe Shopping Tips,” published January 25, 2024, advises buying from the original equipment manufacturer where possible, checking that products meet national safety requirements and examining branding and packaging closely. INTERPOL likewise recommends buying premium products from the manufacturer or reputable outlets and checking a brand’s approved-retailer list when one is available.
Interpret an extreme discount correctly
A sale can be legitimate, but a price far below the normal value for the same model is a reason to investigate. INTERPOL lists an unusually low price as a likely fake warning sign. It is not a mathematical counterfeit test: clearance inventory, older revisions and open-box stock can also be discounted. Compare the complete deal, including seller identity, specifications, certification, return rights and condition, rather than judging the percentage reduction alone.

4. Match the accessory type to the checks it needs

5. Inspect chargers and cables for physical warning signs
Photos cannot reveal every internal defect, but they can rule out many visibly poor or inconsistent items. Before use, inspect a discounted accessory in good light.

- Check the casing for cracks, gaps, bulges, burn marks, melted areas or loose parts.
- Inspect the plug pins for bending, unusual dimensions, corrosion or looseness.
- Verify that the label is legible and includes the model and electrical output information.
- Look for a certification mark molded or printed on the product where the relevant authority requires it, rather than only on removable packaging.
- Do not use an adapter that becomes unusually hot, smells like burning plastic, makes abnormal sounds or intermittently loses power.
Cable inspection
- Check both connectors for bent, recessed or contaminated contacts.
- Look for cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, stiff spots or separated strain relief.
- Confirm that the connector housing is firmly attached and does not twist independently of the cable.
- For a used cable, ask how it was stored and whether it has been exposed to liquid, heat or repeated heavy bending.
Samsung’s support guidance, dated August 8, 2017, cautions about uncertified charging accessories and recommends checking wired connectors for foreign objects. That is manufacturer-specific guidance, not proof that every third-party accessory is unsafe. It is a practical reason to clean and inspect a connector before connecting it.
6. Handle used, refurbished and open-box accessories differently
Second-hand accessories carry information gaps that a new, traceable product may not. “Like new” describes appearance, not electrical history. Ask a trusted seller for the item’s age, condition, previous use, reason for return and any available certification or purchase record.
Questions to ask the seller
- What is the exact model number and revision?
- How old is the item, and how was it used and stored?
- Has it ever been dropped, exposed to liquid, overheated or repaired?
- Are all original parts included, including the correct plug or cable?
- What return period applies if the item fails the compatibility or safety check?
Use detailed photographs to look for wear, but do not treat a clean exterior as a safety guarantee. Internal damage and previous misuse may not be visible. If the seller cannot answer basic history questions or refuses to show the label, the discount does not compensate for the uncertainty.
7. Search recalls and safety alerts
Before using an older or used accessory, search the relevant government recall and safety-alert database by product name, model number and manufacturer. Search both the exact model and obvious spelling variants from the label. A recall result may cover only one revision or production batch, so compare the identifiers carefully.

A specific example shows why this matters: on July 29, 2025, the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards reported that a counterfeit Apple-branded USB-C power adapter, model A1696, presented a serious risk of fire and electric shock because its plug pins did not meet dimensional requirements. That report concerns the identified counterfeit model; it is not evidence that all discounted chargers or all products with similar branding are dangerous.

Run this sequence before placing an order. It keeps a tempting price from becoming the first and only decision.
- Write down the device requirements. Record the model, connector, required voltage and current, and the function you need.
- Open the full listing. Ignore the headline until you can see the model number, specifications, condition and seller information.
- Check electrical compatibility. Compare the charger or adapter’s listed output with the device requirements. Do not infer compatibility from a connector shape.
- Check the applicable certification. Identify the national mark required for a wall-powered product, or verify the relevant cable or brand program if the listing makes that claim.
- Inspect product photographs. Confirm that the item itself, not only the packaging, shows a readable label, model and required marking.
- Evaluate the seller. Confirm contact details, return terms, warranty handling and whether the seller is authorized when the manufacturer publishes an approved-retailer list.
- For used items, check history and recalls. Ask the condition questions and search the government database before connecting the accessory.
- Decide using the whole deal. Keep the discount only if the specifications, certification evidence, seller recourse and condition are credible together.
- Inspect on arrival. Compare the delivered item with the listing, then examine the plug, casing, connector, cable and label before use.
9. Troubleshoot common red flags
The listing has no clear certification photo
Ask the seller for an unedited photograph of the mark on the product and the complete model label. If the seller cannot provide it, do not treat packaging text or a generic compliance statement as a substitute. For a wall-powered product, check your country’s required mark before buying.
The output specification is missing or contradictory
Do not guess from the connector or from a “fast charging” headline. Request the exact output voltage and current and compare them with the device’s requirements. If the title, label and technical table disagree, return to the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance or choose another listing.
The item arrives hot, damaged or different from the photos
Disconnect it and stop testing. Photograph the condition, retain the packaging and use the seller’s return or safety-reporting process. Do not continue charging to see whether the heat or smell goes away.

The connector does not fit smoothly
Do not force it. Inspect both connectors for foreign objects, bent contacts or a mismatched model. Samsung specifically recommends checking wired connectors for foreign objects; a poor fit can also indicate the wrong accessory or a counterfeit part.
The discount is dramatically larger than comparable offers
Recheck the seller, model, condition, certification and return terms. An unusually low price is a warning sign identified by INTERPOL, but it is not conclusive by itself. If several warning signs appear together, choose a traceable seller instead of trying to justify the price.
10. Compare several discounted options without inventing a “best” deal
When two or more listings appear similar, score the evidence on practical questions rather than the percentage discount.

- Seller confidence: Is the seller identifiable, reachable and able to support a return?
- Condition and history: Is the item new, open-box, refurbished or used, and is its history documented?
- Total deal quality: Does the lower price remain worthwhile after accounting for uncertain specifications, weak seller recourse or limited returns?
There is no standardized formula that turns those factors into a trustworthy discount score. A listing with a smaller reduction and clear specifications can be a better purchase than one with a dramatic reduction and unanswered questions.
11. What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Health Canada, Apple, USB-IF, UL Research Institutes, INTERPOL, Samsung and the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards provide guidance and specific warnings, not a universal probability that any discounted accessory is counterfeit. No named source provides a reliable prevalence percentage for unsafe or counterfeit discounted tech accessories. Treat the checks above as risk controls, not as a guarantee that an item is genuine.
The strongest conclusion is practical: verify the device match, the product marking, the seller and the item’s condition before you pay or connect it. If one of those facts cannot be established, the safest discount is the one you decline.
