Before buying an Apple product on sale, verify the exact model and configuration, calculate the price you will actually pay, and read the seller’s return and warranty terms. For a pre-owned iPhone, also check its battery, parts history, carrier lock, condition, and Activation Lock status. A discount is only a good deal if the product and the protections attached to it match what you expect.
Apple’s policy examples below are from its U.S. shopping pages and U.S./Canada reseller guidance; its pre-owned iPhone checklist is hosted on Apple’s Ireland support site. Retailer rules and legal rights vary by location, so confirm the terms shown for your country and the specific listing before paying.

1. Confirm the exact product, generation, and configuration
Start with the full product name and specifications, not just the headline name. Apple product names can cover multiple generations and configurations. An iPad or Mac with a different screen size, storage capacity, processor, or connectivity option is not necessarily comparable to the one in another listing.

For an iPhone, check storage and whether the device is unlocked or tied to a carrier. For a Mac, iPad, or other product, verify the configuration and included accessories. Compare like with like: a lower price may reflect less storage, a different generation, or a different bundle rather than a better price on the same item.

- Record the full model name, generation, and storage or other configuration.
- Check whether the listing is for a new, refurbished, or pre-owned unit.
- Read what is included in the box and whether any accessories shown are sold separately.
- For a carrier offer or financed device, identify the service commitment and fees as well as the device price.
Do not assume that two listings with similar names are interchangeable. Compare the configuration field in each listing, not just the product photograph or a shortened title. If a key detail is missing or ambiguous, ask the seller to confirm it in writing before checkout. This is especially useful when an offer describes a product as a bundle or uses a broad family name rather than identifying a specific version.
2. Work out the actual price and conditions of the sale
Compare the final out-of-pocket price for the same configuration. A displayed discount may depend on a trade-in, carrier plan, education eligibility, payment method, or other condition. Record the seller, quoted price, and each condition; do not treat a conditional offer as an unconditional price reduction.
If a device is tied to financing or a service plan, include required payments and fees in your comparison. A low upfront price can cost more over the commitment than a higher device-only price. Check how the offer is applied at checkout and whether the advertised amount assumes a trade-in or other credit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Offer detail | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Device price | Final price for the exact model and configuration, including any displayed taxes or charges that apply in your location. |
| Trade-in credit | Whether the discount depends on an eligible device, its assessed condition, or a later credit. |
| Carrier or financing deal | Required plan, payment term, fees, and what happens if you cancel or change service. |
| Bundle or included accessory | Whether the item is included in the sale price or merely pictured or offered separately. |
At checkout, compare the order summary with the original offer. Confirm which amount is charged now, whether a trade-in value is immediate or conditional, and whether any plan or financing commitment remains after the purchase. Keep the offer details as well as the receipt: together they help you remember what the discount promised and what you actually paid.
Apple’s Certified Refurbished store currently describes savings of up to 15%, but that is a live promotional claim, not a guaranteed discount on every product or a fixed saving over time. Check the current price and availability for the exact item before deciding. The same store lists categories including Mac, iPad, iPhone, Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod, and accessories; availability changes.
3. Check who is selling it and what protections apply
Identify the seller of record, especially when a marketplace listing includes multiple sellers. A retailer’s return and refund policy is not automatically Apple’s policy. Apple says authorized resellers in the United States and Canada set their own return and refund terms. Apple’s U.S. shopping help also says products bought through other retailers must be returned to those retailers under their policies.
Read the seller’s written terms before checkout and save a copy of the listing. Look for the return deadline, whether opened products can be returned, any restocking or shipping fees, and the process for reporting a fault. Keep the itemized receipt; it establishes where and when you bought the product and at what price.

- Confirm the retailer’s identity and whether it is the seller, not just the marketplace platform.
- Find the return period and any exclusions for sale, opened, or clearance items.
- Check who pays return shipping and how refunds are issued.
- Save the listing, order confirmation, and itemized receipt.
A marketplace page can make the platform and the seller look like one business, but the policy that matters may be the named seller’s. Check who will issue your receipt and who handles a return or fault claim. If the seller’s identity, return address, or policy is unclear, resolve that before payment rather than assuming Apple will take the item back.
Apple’s U.S. guidance describes a limited route for contacting Apple if an authorized reseller refuses a return: among other requirements, contact Apple within 14 days of purchase and provide proof of purchase showing the reseller’s name and address, product and version, purchase date, and purchase price. This is not a general replacement for the reseller’s policy or a universal return right; verify Apple’s current terms and local rules.
4. Compare warranty and support coverage
Check who provides the warranty, how long it lasts, what it covers, and how to make a claim. A sale price does not by itself establish the warranty term. For third-party refurbished or pre-owned stock, read the seller’s warranty separately from Apple’s coverage and confirm whether the product is eligible for the support options you expect.
Ask whether a warranty is provided by Apple, the retailer, or a refurbisher, and note the stated term and claim process. Do not infer that a third-party refurbished product follows Apple’s refurbishment process just because the listing uses the word “refurbished.” The label alone does not tell you what was tested, what was replaced, or who will resolve a problem. Read the specific seller’s written description and coverage.
Apple’s U.S. shopping help says its Certified Refurbished products receive functionality testing, replacement of defective modules identified during testing, cleaning and inspection, repackaging, and a final quality inspection. It describes a standard one-year limited warranty for those products. Apple’s U.S. page also describes a return request within 14 calendar days of receipt for its Certified Refurbished purchases. These are Apple U.S. store terms, not terms for every retailer or country. [Apple U.S. shopping help]
Apple’s current Certified Refurbished page says products include a one-year warranty and full functional testing. It listed a refurbished unlocked iPhone 16 with 128GB storage when accessed, but inventory and prices are live and may change. Treat a particular listing as a point-in-time example, not a promise that it remains available. [Apple Certified Refurbished store]
5. Understand price-adjustment claims before relying on them
Do not assume a retailer will match a later sale price. Apple’s U.S. shopping terms describe a limited process under which a buyer may request a refund or credit if Apple reduces the price of an Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days after receipt. The terms exclude limited-time price reductions and special sales events such as Black Friday, so this is not a general price-match guarantee. Check the current terms for the purchase channel and region. [Apple U.S. sales policies]

This is a narrow Apple Store policy example, not a promise that a retailer will refund the difference if another seller later advertises a lower price. If you are relying on any price-adjustment policy, check which purchase channel it covers, how the request must be made, the applicable timing, and the exclusions. Do not build the purchase decision around an assumed future adjustment.
6. For a pre-owned iPhone, inspect it before you commit
Apple advises buyers to use a reliable seller, understand the return process, and learn what any seller certification means. If you can inspect the phone in person, do so before paying; if buying remotely, use the return window to complete the checks promptly. Apple’s Ireland-hosted support guide explains the following checks. [Apple Support: If you want to buy a pre-owned iPhone]
Think of this as a sequence: first establish whether you can safely set up and use the phone, then check its condition and components, and finally make sure it will work with your carrier. Ask the seller how returns work before you begin, especially if a problem only becomes apparent during setup or a settings check.
Check Activation Lock first
Do not buy an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If you see an “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen, do not proceed; for an online purchase, Apple says to return the device. Ask the seller to remove the lock and let you verify the phone can be set up before completing an in-person purchase.
Do not rely on a seller’s assurance that the lock will be removed later. Make this a condition of completing the purchase, or use the return process if the device arrives locked. Activation Lock is a stop sign, not a defect to accept in exchange for a larger discount.

Inspect the body, charging, and basic functions
- Look over the screen, case, and connectors for scratches, scuffs, dents, or damage.
- Turn the phone on and confirm it charges.
- Test Wi-Fi, buttons, camera, speakers, and microphone.
Take enough time to check the actual device rather than relying only on photos. If buying online, document any damage or function problem promptly and follow the seller’s stated process while the return window is open. A phone that powers on is not necessarily free of condition or component issues, so complete the rest of the inspection as well.
Review parts history and battery condition
On supported models, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple says this section may appear on iOS 15.2 or later, depending on the model and replaced parts. An “Unknown” label can mean a part was installed incompletely, is not genuine or was previously used, or is not functioning as expected.

Interpret the screen in context: the section is not available in every case, so its absence alone does not establish the device’s repair history. If a part is marked “Unknown,” ask what was replaced and when, and decide whether the seller’s explanation and return terms are acceptable before keeping the phone.
Then open Settings > Battery and review maximum capacity and any battery messages, when available. Apple notes that battery health information is not available for unknown or non-genuine batteries. If the section or reading is absent, do not interpret that alone as proof that the battery is original or healthy; ask the seller for an explanation and consider whether the return terms give you enough time to assess it.
Battery condition matters because it is one part of the phone’s present condition, not just a line in the listing. Compare what the seller represented with what the device reports, where a reading is available. If you cannot confirm the battery status, factor that uncertainty into your decision rather than treating the lowest advertised price as the complete comparison.
Confirm carrier status
Go to Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock. Apple’s guide says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If it is locked, establish which carrier controls it and whether the phone will work with your service before buying.
Do not confuse an unlocked phone with a phone that is simply powered on and working. The lock status can affect whether it suits your service; confirm it against your intended use before purchase. If the listing promised an unlocked device but the setting shows otherwise, contact the seller within the applicable return process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Compare new sale, Apple Certified Refurbished, and pre-owned options
Choose by total cost and protection, not the label alone. “Refurbished” can refer to different processes and warranties depending on the seller. Compare the same model and configuration, what is included, condition, return terms, and warranty provider before deciding.
| Option | What to establish | What the cited Apple terms say |
|---|---|---|
| New product on sale | Exact configuration, sale conditions, seller’s return policy, and warranty terms. | Third-party retailer terms are set by that retailer; Apple’s U.S. pages do not make every retailer’s sale subject to Apple’s own return terms. |
| Apple Certified Refurbished | Current listing, configuration, price, and country-specific store terms. | Apple describes full functional testing and a one-year limited warranty; its U.S. shopping help details its refurbishment checks and a 14-calendar-day return-request period. |
| Third-party refurbished | Refurbisher, grading definition, parts and battery policy, return window, and warranty provider. | Apple’s stated Certified Refurbished process and terms do not establish what a third party does or covers. |
| Pre-owned | Physical condition, battery, parts history, carrier lock, Activation Lock, and seller’s return process. | Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance recommends checking these areas and says not to buy with Activation Lock enabled. |
A useful comparison is not “new versus used” in the abstract. Put the exact configuration and total out-of-pocket price side by side, then note the condition, included items, warranty provider and duration, and return deadline for each candidate. For a carrier-financed offer, add the commitment and fees. For refurbished and pre-owned options, include the work required to verify condition and any uncertainty the listing leaves unresolved.

Apple Certified Refurbished is one defined option with Apple’s published testing and warranty terms for the applicable store, but its inventory and prices can change. A third-party refurbished listing may suit a buyer only if the seller clearly explains its own process, coverage, and return terms. A pre-owned offer needs a device-level inspection, especially for an iPhone. No category is automatically the best value for every buyer.
8. A final checkout checklist
- Match the exact model and configuration across the listing, cart, and any receipt or order summary.
- Calculate the price after conditions such as trade-in, financing, or a service plan, and include associated fees.
- Confirm who sells the product and read that seller’s return and warranty terms.
- Save the product listing, policy terms, and itemized proof of purchase.
- For a pre-owned iPhone, complete the inspection and verify Activation Lock is off before paying or before the return period ends.
Finally, check local consumer protections and the terms shown for your country. The Apple policy examples here are specific to the cited U.S. or regional pages, and sale pricing, stock, and seller terms can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Apple product on sale automatically a good deal?
No. Compare the exact model and configuration, final out-of-pocket price, sale conditions, included items, seller, return terms, and warranty. A headline discount may depend on trade-in, financing, or a service plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the seller’s return policy apply to Apple products?
Usually the purchase channel matters. Apple says authorized resellers in the United States and Canada set their own return and refund policies, and its U.S. shopping help says purchases from other retailers must be returned to those retailers under their policies. Check the specific seller’s written terms and local rights.
What should I check before buying a discounted pre-owned iPhone?
Check Activation Lock first; Apple says not to buy an iPhone with it enabled. Then inspect physical condition, confirm it turns on and charges, test Wi-Fi, buttons, camera, speakers, and microphone, review Parts and Service History and battery information when available, and check Network Provider Lock.
Is Apple Certified Refurbished the same as third-party refurbished?
No. Apple describes its Certified Refurbished products as function-tested and backed by a one-year limited warranty, with a refurbishment process detailed on its U.S. shopping help page. A third-party refurbisher’s process, warranty, and return terms must be checked separately.
Will Apple refund the difference if the price drops after I buy?
Do not assume so. Apple’s U.S. sales terms describe a limited 14-calendar-day price-adjustment process for qualifying Apple-branded product purchases, but exclude limited-time reductions and special sales events such as Black Friday. It is not a general price-match guarantee; check current terms for your purchase channel and region.
The Bottom Line
Before paying, verify the exact configuration and true total price, identify the seller, and save its return and warranty terms with your receipt. For a pre-owned iPhone, check condition, parts and battery information, carrier status, and Activation Lock; do not buy one with Activation Lock enabled. Treat every Apple policy example as region- and channel-specific, and confirm the current local terms.
