For a preowned iPhone, also check Activation Lock, battery health, parts history, and carrier compatibility. Start with the exact device and offer
A discount is meaningful only when you know what is being discounted. Confirm the model, configuration, storage, connectivity, condition, and included items on the actual listing. Distinguish new, open-box, refurbished, and used devices: those labels describe different purchase conditions, and a headline price does not establish that two offers are comparable.

Compare the final amount you would pay, including applicable taxes and any financing costs, alongside the seller’s terms. Check whether accessories or other items normally expected for that listing are included, and whether the offer depends on a trade-in or another condition.

For eligible Apple Store purchases in the United States, Apple’s U.S. Retail Sales Policy allows returns or exchanges within 14 days after receipt, subject to its conditions. Apple also says customers may request a refund or credit if Apple reduces the price of an Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days of receipt. These are Apple Store terms, not rules for purchases from other retailers, and Apple says returns must be made in the country of purchase.

If you buy from another retailer or a preowned seller, the seller’s policy controls. Read the actual terms for the return window, acceptable condition, return shipping or restocking charges, and who provides the warranty. A warranty’s value depends on its coverage and provider, not simply on whether the listing says “warranty included.”
For a preowned iPhone, inspect the phone itself
Apple’s guidance for buying a preowned iPhone recommends using a reliable seller, understanding the return policy and certification, and asking about physical damage, battery health, and parts history. A cosmetic grade alone cannot answer those questions.

Look for damage and test basic operation
- Inspect the display, frame, back, and connector for damage.
- Power on the iPhone and test that it works. If possible, inspect it in person before paying or use a return path that gives you time to check it.
- Ask what certification means if the seller describes the phone as certified; the label alone does not tell you what was inspected or replaced.
Check battery health and parts history
Review Battery Health and Parts and Service History in Settings where those sections are available for the model and software version. Ask the seller about battery condition and repair history if the information is unavailable or unclear. Apple’s instructions are specific to iPhone; settings and available history can vary by model and software.

Make sure Activation Lock is off
Do not buy an iPhone that is still linked to someone else through Activation Lock. Confirm that the seller has removed the device from their account and that you can proceed through setup. If the seller will not allow a reasonable check or provide a usable return option, treat that as a material risk rather than assuming the phone is sound.

Verify carrier lock and network compatibility
On an iPhone, check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. An unlocked status does not by itself guarantee that the phone works with your plan: confirm the exact model and intended service with your carrier.
Apple’s U.S. iPhone shopping help advises checking that your carrier supports eSIM. It says an unlocked iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or later purchased in the United States can be activated with supported eSIM carriers, but you should confirm support for your specific cellular plan. Apple also says iPhones bought through the listed carrier installment arrangements may remain locked to that carrier until paid in full. Verify the plan, payoff status, and unlock conditions with the carrier before relying on the phone for another network.

Compare refurbished options using the exact listing
Apple Certified Refurbished listings describe functional testing, cleaning, inspection, replacement of defective modules identified in testing, repackaging, and final quality checks. The cited Apple listings state a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns, and indicate that AppleCare may be purchased. Those terms and the included items should be checked on the specific product page for your location and purchase; models and stock vary.
Compare the exact refurbished configuration and price with a new sale device. Do not assume every refurbished listing has the same specifications, accessories, or availability.

Calculate trade-in and financing costs carefully
Do not subtract an estimated trade-in value from the sale price as though it were guaranteed. Apple says it evaluates a trade-in after receiving the device and applies credit if its condition matches the customer’s description. For an online purchase, returning the new device cancels the trade-in automatically in some cases; in some cases, the old device may not be returnable. Read the current transaction terms before sending it.
For financing, compare the total amount due under the specific plan, not just the advertised monthly payment. For a carrier installment offer, include the carrier and payoff conditions in your decision, especially if you may switch networks.
Use a like-for-like comparison
When choosing between offers, put the relevant details side by side rather than comparing only headline prices:

- New, open-box, refurbished, or used condition
- Seller and warranty provider
- Total price after taxes and financing costs, with trade-in credit shown separately as conditional
- Return period, eligibility conditions, and return costs
- For a used iPhone: battery health, parts history, Activation Lock, carrier lock, and network fit
- Included accessories and any missing items
Apple Store, authorized retailers, and preowned sellers can offer different prices and protections. The best comparison is between the exact devices and terms available to you, not between seller categories in the abstract.
