A disc collection points to a disc-drive Series X: Series S is all-digital and cannot play discs. Digital-only buyers can compare both families by the games they want to play, their display, and their storage needs.
Start with the games you already own
Make an inventory of the Xbox games you care about and note whether each is digital or on disc. Then look up essential titles in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog. Compatibility covers select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games—not every title from those generations—and features can vary by game.

- Digital games: Eligible games you own appear in the console’s “Ready to Install” section.
- Supported discs: On a disc-drive Series X, insert the game disc to download the supported title. Keep the disc inserted to play.
- Series S: Its all-digital design means you cannot use game discs directly, including supported older discs.
If an original Xbox game is important to you, check its specific limitations too. Xbox says original Xbox games played through backward compatibility do not support legacy Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer or in-game marketplaces; supported offline multiplayer modes may remain. These games do not gain Xbox achievements, and original Xbox saves do not transfer to Series X|S.

Compare the exact model, not just “X” versus “S”
Xbox’s product pages list several configurations. The comparison below reflects the options displayed on those pages, not a promise that every configuration is available in every market. Xbox says options and pricing vary by market.

| Configuration shown by Xbox | Disc drive | Capacity | Manufacturer’s display description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series X Carbon Black | Yes | 1TB | Series X is described as native 4K |
| Series X Robot White | No; all-digital | 1TB | Series X is described as native 4K |
| Series X Galaxy Black | Yes | 2TB | Series X is described as native 4K |
| Series S all-digital | No | 512GB or 1TB, depending on configuration | Designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K |
These are Xbox manufacturer descriptions, not guarantees of what every game will render on every screen. Xbox advertises up to 120 FPS for supported content; reaching that frame rate depends on the game and a compatible display. Check the exact configuration and the games you play alongside your TV or monitor’s capabilities.
Choose storage for how you play
Internal capacity differs by configuration, so check the listed capacity before buying. If you expect to keep many games installed, decide whether the built-in space is enough or whether you will add storage.

Xbox Storage Expansion Card
The dedicated Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card plugs into the console’s rear expansion port. Xbox describes it as matching the internal SSD’s performance, making it the option designed for additional game storage with internal-SSD-matched performance. Xbox’s 2021 Seagate announcement discussed 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB cards; that historical announcement does not establish current prices or availability.

Xbox documents USB 3.1 external HDD support. It provides another way to add external storage, but do not assume a USB drive has the expansion card’s performance or that every game can run from it. Check the requirements for the specific game and storage device. Xbox says Quick Resume works with internal storage, an expansion card, or USB external storage.

Know what the 2026 disc-to-digital feature does—and does not do
In an August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox Wire said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Series X and launching the game. The feature launched with thousands of eligible titles, but not all titles were included. Check the game’s eligibility and Xbox’s official instructions before relying on it. The announcement does not identify Series S as a device for claiming the entitlement, and the disc continues to work; this is not a universal conversion of every disc into a digital license.

Use this checklist before you pay
- Confirm the exact SKU: Check whether it has a disc drive and whether its internal storage is 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB.
- Check your must-play games: Verify older titles individually in Xbox’s compatibility catalog, and distinguish digital purchases from discs.
- Match the console to your screen: Compare Series X’s native-4K description with Series S’s 1440p design and upscaling, then check support in your games and display.
- Plan for extra space: Choose the dedicated card if you want additional storage designed to match internal SSD performance; consider USB storage for supported uses after checking game requirements.
- Verify the local offer: Confirm market-specific configuration, price, stock, and retailer return terms for the exact model. Xbox notes that options and prices vary by market.
