Before you buy an unlocked phone or move your number to a new carrier, check the exact phone’s IMEI with the destination carrier, confirm the phone is actually unlocked, and verify that its network features and SIM setup fit the service you want. “Unlocked” removes a carrier restriction; it does not guarantee compatibility or full service.
Start with the exact phone and its IMEI
Ask the seller for the phone’s exact model number, regional variant, and IMEI—the device identifier used by carriers to check eligibility. A brand or family name is not enough: variants of the same phone can differ in network hardware and software.

Run the IMEI through the carrier you intend to use before you pay or begin a switch. T-Mobile’s BYOD guide describes its checker as a way to assess device capabilities and compatibility; its BYOD page also directs customers to check a device before getting started. A checker result is useful, but it is not a promise of every feature or performance level.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you cannot get the IMEI before purchase, treat compatibility as unverified. Ask the seller for a return window that gives you time to check the phone, or choose a device whose exact identifier can be checked first.

Confirm the phone is unlocked—and find out when
Ask the current carrier, not just the seller, to confirm the phone’s unlock status. If it is still locked, ask whether it qualifies for unlocking and how long the process takes. AT&T’s Bring Your Own Device page includes unlock status among its BYOD checks.
Do not assume that a phone advertised as unlocked can be activated immediately. Verizon notes in its BYOD FAQs that an unlocked eSIM phone can take up to 24 hours to activate after unlocking. Ask the destination carrier about its own activation timing before planning a same-day transfer.

Check what “compatible” means for the service you need
Unlocking changes a software restriction; it does not add missing radio hardware, supported frequencies, or network features. The Consumer Code for Wireless Service, hosted by T-Mobile, explains: “Unlocking a device will not necessarily make a device interoperable with other networks; a device designed for one network is not made technologically compatible with another network merely by ‘unlocking’ it.”

Look beyond a basic eligible/ineligible result. Check the destination carrier’s guidance for the phone’s supported frequencies and technologies, voice and data service, VoLTE, and any carrier features you rely on. T-Mobile warns that partial compatibility may mean reduced coverage or slower speeds; for devices it did not sell, it does not guarantee functionality or performance.

- Fully compatible versus partially compatible: If the carrier distinguishes these outcomes, find out what capabilities or coverage are missing in the partial result.
- Coverage where you use the phone: Check the carrier’s coverage information for your home, workplace, and regular travel routes. A phone can pass an eligibility check while coverage still differs by location.
- Features you depend on: Confirm support for the voice, data, and carrier-specific services that matter to you rather than assuming they will work because the phone can connect.
Verify SIM and activation requirements
Confirm that both the phone and destination carrier support the SIM method you plan to use: a physical SIM, eSIM, or both. Then follow the carrier’s activation instructions for that specific phone. AT&T’s BYOD guidance covers SIM or eSIM setup and the transfer flow; Verizon’s BYOD FAQs address device identification and eSIM activation.
Keep your old service active until the new line is working and, if you are keeping your number, the number transfer has completed. Cancelling first can interrupt service or complicate the transfer. Check the destination carrier’s instructions for when to start the port and what account information it requires.

Back up your phone and check plan terms separately
Back up personal data before changing service. AT&T’s BYOD checklist specifically advises backing up data before switching. Follow the backup method for your phone, and make sure you can access the backup before starting activation.
Handset compatibility and plan suitability are separate decisions. After confirming the device, review the destination plan’s current terms, including the services and conditions you need. Carrier offers and terms can change, so verify them directly with the carrier rather than treating a phone’s compatibility result as approval of a particular plan.
