Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore paying, prove three things: the phone is SIM-unlocked now (or has a documented, immediate path to unlocking), the exact model is accepted by your intended carrier, and the promotion still makes financial sense after financing, trade-in, service, taxes, and cancellation terms. An “unlocked” label alone proves none of those.
What “unlocked” actually means
A carrier lock is a software restriction that can prevent a phone from registering with another carrier’s SIM. Unlocking removes that restriction. It does not certify that the phone supports every carrier’s radio bands, network technology, calling features, or activation method.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters with phones sold through carrier promotions. A device can be fully paid for yet incompatible with your intended network, or technically compatible but still locked because an installment balance remains. Treat lock status, network compatibility, and the financial offer as separate checks.

Verify the current SIM-lock status before money changes hands
iPhone: inspect the Carrier Lock field
On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. A status indicating no SIM restrictions is the evidence you want. Have the seller show this screen on the actual handset, not a photograph or a different device’s settings.
Check that the IMEI and model shown on the screen match the phone being sold. A seller can accidentally provide details for another handset, and a listing can contain a generic model number rather than the specific variant in your possession.
If the field shows a carrier name, an unknown status, or anything other than an unrestricted state, ask the original carrier to confirm eligibility and the exact steps required. Do not assume a reset, a new SIM, or a software update will remove a carrier lock.

Android and other phones: use the documented status screen
Menus differ by manufacturer, model, and software version. Ask the seller to open the manufacturer’s or original carrier’s documented unlock-status screen and demonstrate it live. If the menu is unavailable, obtain the IMEI and have the original carrier verify the status before purchase.
Do not treat a phone that reaches a home screen, accepts Wi-Fi, or displays a signal from its original carrier as proof that it is unlocked. Those tests do not show whether another carrier’s SIM will be accepted.
Use a second proof when the seller says “it is unlocked”
- Record the exact original carrier and model number shown in the phone’s settings or packaging.
- Ask whether the device was bought outright, financed, received as a promotion, or previously reported lost or stolen.
- Request the IMEI before paying so you can run the carrier’s compatibility and eligibility checks.
- Keep the seller’s written description and any promised return period. A verbal promise to unlock later is not equivalent to an unlocked device today.
- Ask for a receipt or other proof showing the purchase date when the carrier’s rule depends on that date.
If a seller refuses to provide the IMEI or will only discuss unlocking after payment, you cannot complete the most important checks. Treat that lack of information as a reason to walk away, not as a minor inconvenience.
Find out whether financing or an unpaid balance controls unlocking
Carrier policies tie unlocking to purchase date, payment status, and the type of agreement. Ask the seller whether any device-payment contract remains and whether the balance is zero. Also ask whether the original account is current and whether the carrier has already approved an unlock.

Do not confuse a phone’s payoff amount with the amount of service still required for a promotion. A device may have monthly bill credits tied to a qualifying line even while an installment agreement remains. Read both the device agreement and the service promotion.

Installment plans can keep an iPhone locked
Apple’s iPhone Shopping Help explains that iPhones financed through AT&T’s Installment Plan, T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon’s Device Payment Program remain locked until paid in full. That statement applies to those named carrier financing paths; it is not a universal rule for every purchase method or every carrier.
Ask which carrier financed the actual phone, rather than relying on the seller’s statement that it was “paid off.” If the phone was transferred between owners, the original financing arrangement and the original carrier can still determine the unlock process.
AT&T requires a zero installment balance
AT&T’s unlock guidance says the installment balance must be paid in full before the device can be unlocked. Confirm the balance directly with AT&T for the specific IMEI rather than relying on a seller’s estimate or an old account screenshot.
Request written confirmation of the unlock request or approval when possible. Keep the case number, payoff receipt, and date the carrier says the status should change. Those records help if the handset remains locked after payment.
Verizon’s policy is date-sensitive
Verizon’s support policy, updated February 18, 2026, says devices purchased on or after January 27, 2026 remain locked until the full device payment or contract terms are fulfilled. The same policy describes purchases made earlier as subject to a 60-day rule and notes that the payment method can affect how quickly an eligible, paid-in-full device unlocks. Because the rule depends on purchase date and payment method, verify the live policy for the actual device instead of applying the 60-day rule automatically.
That example illustrates why an older seller listing can be misleading. A rule that applied to a phone purchased before January 27, 2026 may not apply to a similar model purchased afterward. Confirm the actual purchase date and current carrier policy before treating a phone as eligible.
Questions that expose a risky promise
- What is the original carrier and the device’s purchase date?
- Is there an active installment agreement, and what is the exact payoff amount?
- Has the original carrier confirmed that this IMEI is eligible for an unlock now?
- Who is responsible for paying any remaining balance, and what happens if the carrier refuses the unlock?
- Can you return the phone if the IMEI is rejected or the device cannot activate on my carrier?
- Will cancellation of the original line stop credits or make the remaining device balance due?
If the seller says the phone will unlock after a future payment, value it as a locked phone until the carrier confirms otherwise. A private promise cannot override the original carrier’s eligibility rules.
Check compatibility for the exact model, not just the phone family
Different regional and carrier variants can have different radios, bands, firmware, or feature support even when they share the same marketing name. Enter the phone’s IMEI on the intended carrier’s bring-your-own-device (BYOD) compatibility page before purchase. Use the IMEI from the handset you will receive, not a generic number from a listing.

Run the check yourself on the intended carrier’s official site. A seller’s claim that “this model works on that network” may refer to another regional variant, another IMEI, or only basic data service.
What the IMEI check can reveal
- Whether the carrier recognizes the exact model and IMEI.
- Whether the device is eligible for activation on that network.
- Whether voice, text, data, or other network functions have limitations.
- Whether the IMEI is blocked, already associated with another account, or otherwise ineligible.
Verizon warns that differences in network technology can limit functionality or prevent use on another network. Therefore, an unlocked status is necessary but not sufficient: the intended carrier must accept the exact hardware.
Check the features you actually need
Ask the carrier whether the accepted model supports the services you rely on, such as voice over LTE, 5G access, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot use, or international roaming. An IMEI result that says a phone can activate does not necessarily promise identical features across all plans or locations.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Write down any limitation shown by the checker before purchasing. If the carrier offers separate compatibility results for voice, messaging, or data, save each result rather than relying on a single “compatible” heading.
eSIM requires an additional check
If you plan to activate with eSIM, verify that the exact device and carrier support it. T-Mobile directs users to check the phone’s EID for eSIM compatibility. Obtain the EID from the handset or its settings and follow the intended carrier’s activation instructions before committing to a nonrefundable sale.
An eSIM-capable phone may still need to be unlocked and accepted by the carrier’s IMEI system. If the handset has no physical-SIM fallback, complete the EID and activation checks before the return window becomes your only remedy.
Evaluate the whole carrier promotion, not the headline phone price
Carrier deals often distribute the cost across a required service term. The advertised device amount may depend on monthly bill credits, a qualifying plan, a trade-in, or keeping the line active for a specified period. Read the actual offer attached to the phone and calculate what you must pay, when you must pay it, and what causes credits to stop.
Ask whether the promotion requires a particular account type, a new line, an upgrade, or a trade-in delivered by a deadline. Save the offer page and checkout summary because promotional language can be difficult to reconstruct later.

| Deal element | What to verify before purchase | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Device financing | Starting balance, monthly payment, payoff rules, and whether the phone stays locked until paid | An unpaid balance can prevent unlocking and leaves you responsible for the remaining device cost |
| Required service plan | Plan name, monthly charge, taxes and fees, minimum term, and eligibility requirements | A low device price can be outweighed by the service commitment |
| Trade-in | Eligible model and condition, inspection rules, deadline, and monthly-credit schedule | Missing a condition or deadline can reduce or eliminate promotional credits |
| Cancellation | What happens to unpaid installments and future credits if the line or plan is canceled | Leaving early may make the remaining device balance due and end credits |
| Taxes and upfront charges | Taxes, activation or upgrade fees, down payment, and shipping | These amounts affect the cash required before activation |
| Returns | Return window, restocking charges, condition requirements, and who pays shipping | A usable return right protects you if the IMEI fails or activation does not work |
No universal total-cost formula applies to every promotion. Use the offer’s own payment schedule and service terms, and keep a copy of the terms shown on the purchase date. Compare the total you expect to pay for the device and required service, not merely the monthly device line.
A safe pre-purchase workflow
- Identify the handset. Get the exact model number, storage variant, original carrier, IMEI, and, if relevant, EID. Match those details to the physical phone and the listing.
- Observe the lock status. Have the seller open the iPhone Carrier Lock field or the documented status screen for the particular Android or other device. Capture the result in writing.
- Confirm the financial obligation. Ask for the remaining installment balance, purchase date, and agreement type. Require the original carrier to confirm whether the IMEI can be unlocked now.
- Run the intended carrier’s BYOD check. Enter the IMEI on the carrier’s official compatibility tool. Save the result and note any limitations or rejected features.
- Validate eSIM activation if needed. Check EID and eSIM support with the intended carrier before buying a device that lacks a physical-SIM fallback.
- Read the promotion terms. Record the qualifying plan, trade-in conditions, monthly-credit timing, taxes, payment schedule, cancellation consequences, and return period.
- Test activation while a return is still possible. Insert your SIM or begin eSIM setup, place a call, send a text, and test mobile data. If activation fails, stop before the return deadline and contact the carrier.
- Keep evidence. Save the listing, IMEI result, unlock confirmation, receipt, financing terms, and return instructions. These documents are useful if the seller or carrier later disputes the device’s status.
Perform the checks in this order so you do not spend time calculating a promotion for a handset that cannot activate. If any early check fails, use the return or cancellation terms rather than continuing to the next commitment.
How to compare two carrier deals
Compare deals on the same four axes rather than choosing the lower advertised phone price.
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Prefer the deal that |
|---|---|---|
| Lock status | Is the phone unrestricted now? If not, what carrier rule and payment event unlocks it? | Provides a confirmed, immediate unlock or a clearly documented path you can verify |
| Network fit | Does the exact IMEI pass the intended carrier’s BYOD check, including required features? | Passes before purchase and supports your SIM or eSIM method |
| Total commitment | What will device, plan, taxes, trade-in, and cancellation cost over the required term? | Matches your expected time on the carrier and has understandable payment conditions |
| Exit protection | Can you return the phone if the IMEI is rejected or activation fails? | Offers a written return window long enough to complete compatibility and activation checks |
When one deal depends on trade-in credits and another offers a phone at a higher upfront price, compare the obligations and exit costs, not only the monthly device line. A lower advertised price is not the better deal if it requires a plan you would not otherwise keep or leaves you responsible for a balance after cancellation.

The seller cannot show a lock status
Pause the transaction. Request the IMEI and original carrier, then seek confirmation directly from that carrier. If the seller will not provide enough information for verification, choose a different listing with a written return policy.
The IMEI fails the intended carrier’s checker
Do not activate or pay a nonrefundable balance. Ask whether the failure is caused by a typing error, an unsupported model variant, a blocked IMEI, or a carrier-account issue. Only proceed after the carrier confirms the exact IMEI is eligible.
The phone is paid off but still locked
Payment completion and the carrier’s unlock process are separate events. Ask the original carrier to process or confirm the unlock, and ask how long the status change should take under that carrier’s current policy. Keep the payoff receipt and the carrier’s case number.
The seller says it will unlock after you take over payments
Do not treat that promise as a present benefit. The original account holder, purchase date, payment method, and carrier rules may control eligibility. Buy only if the written terms give you a practical remedy when the unlock does not occur.

eSIM setup fails after purchase
Confirm that the phone has an EID, that the model supports the carrier’s eSIM implementation, and that the device is unlocked. If those checks pass, ask the carrier to reprovision the eSIM. If the IMEI or EID is rejected, use the documented return process before the deadline.
The promotion looks free but the service terms do not fit
Re-read the required plan, trade-in deadline, credit schedule, and cancellation language. If the phone price depends on keeping a line active, estimate the obligation over the full required term. Do not count credits you may lose by changing plans or leaving early.
When a factory-unlocked phone is the simpler option
A factory-unlocked phone can avoid a carrier installment lock and reduce uncertainty about a promotional account. It still requires an exact-model compatibility check: factory-unlocked does not mean universal support for every network or feature. Confirm the model variant, seller terms, IMEI eligibility, SIM or eSIM support, and return rights just as you would with a carrier deal.

- The actual phone shows an unrestricted SIM status, or the original carrier has confirmed immediate eligibility.
- The exact IMEI passes the intended carrier’s BYOD checker.
- Any remaining installment balance, account condition, and unlock requirement are documented.
- eSIM and EID requirements are verified if you will activate electronically.
- You understand the qualifying plan, trade-in rules, taxes, payment schedule, cancellation consequences, and return window.
- You can test activation before the return period expires.
- You have saved the listing, purchase terms, carrier results, and seller communications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trust a listing that says “unlocked” without showing settings?
No. Ask to see the actual phone’s Carrier Lock field or documented unlock-status screen, obtain the IMEI, and verify it with the original and intended carriers. Keep a written return promise if you proceed.
Does paying off a phone automatically unlock it?
Not necessarily. Payment completion and the carrier’s unlock process can be separate events. AT&T requires a zero installment balance, while other carriers apply their own purchase-date and payment rules. Confirm the status with the original carrier.
Will an unlocked phone work on every carrier?
No. Unlocking removes a software restriction, but regional variants can differ in radios, bands, firmware, and network features. Run the exact IMEI through the intended carrier’s BYOD checker.
What should I check if I need eSIM?
Verify that the exact model supports the intended carrier’s eSIM service, obtain its EID, and follow the carrier’s compatibility instructions. Confirm the phone is also unlocked and IMEI-eligible.
What happens to a carrier deal if I cancel service?
Read the specific offer. Cancellation may end future bill credits and leave unpaid device installments due. Trade-in and plan requirements can also affect the amount you ultimately pay.
Is a factory-unlocked phone always the safer purchase?
It can avoid a carrier installment lock, but it is not universally compatible. Confirm the exact model variant, IMEI eligibility, required features, SIM or eSIM support, seller terms, and return window.
The Bottom Line
Buy only after the actual phone’s lock status, exact IMEI compatibility, financing obligations, eSIM requirements, promotion terms, and return rights are documented. If any of those checks depends on a future promise, treat the phone as risky and choose a listing with verifiable status and a practical return option.
