Before buying, identify whether the TV is new clearance, open-box, refurbished, or pre-owned; inspect the exact listing for condition and included accessories; confirm the return route and deadline; get warranty coverage details in writing; and compare the full delivered cost with the same model new. After delivery, document the carton and test the TV promptly. Policies vary by seller, country, sales channel, and listing.
First, identify what “open-box” means on this listing
Condition labels are not universal standards. For example, Best Buy describes its clearance products as new and factory-sealed, open-box products as returns, refurbished products as repaired and restored, and pre-owned products as used. Another seller may use different definitions. Do not infer how long a TV was used, whether it was repaired, or what inspection it received from “open-box” alone.

Best Buy says its open-box products have been tested or inspected for working order and physical appearance, while noting that condition varies. That describes Best Buy’s policy, not a guarantee about all retailers or individual listings. Read the seller’s condition notes and the details for the specific unit.
Check the exact unit, condition notes, and accessories
Review the grade, photos, description, included-items list, and seller identity. Look for disclosed screen scratches, cracks, pressure marks, dead or stuck pixels, burn-in or image retention, discoloration, frame damage, or damaged ports. Confirm whether the remote, stand or feet, power cable, screws, manuals, and any other required accessories are included. Also check whether the original carton or suitable packaging is provided.

Retailer grades describe that retailer’s categories, not an industry-wide scale. Best Buy says its Excellent condition products have no physical flaws and include original parts and accessories or suitable replacements; its guide notes that some Good and Fair items may have missing parts or accessories. Check the listing to learn what comes with the particular TV rather than relying on the grade alone.
If the listing leaves important details unclear, ask the seller before ordering. For a display model, ask whether it was used for demonstrations and whether usage hours are available. No common usage-hour disclosure or universal acceptable threshold is established by the cited retailer policies.

Find out what was tested
Ask what the seller actually inspected or tested and what remedy applies if a function fails. If you can inspect the TV before shipment or pickup, check that it powers on and displays a picture, then test the remote and physical controls, inputs, audio, and network connection.

Check returns and warranty separately
Before paying, find the exact offer’s return deadline, exclusions, return address or store route, shipping or freight charges, packaging requirements, and process for reporting damage or defects. A general store policy may not cover open-box TVs in the same way as other products.
Policies differ by seller and channel. Best Buy says its outlet items are backed by its Return and Exchange Promise. In contrast, Samsung Canada’s terms for the covered sales channels generally exclude TVs and other home-entertainment products with a broken seal from returns, exchanges, or refunds, except in connection with a valid warranty claim. That Canadian policy is not a rule for other retailers or regions.

Warranty coverage is a separate question from return eligibility. Ask who provides it—the TV manufacturer, retailer, marketplace seller, or refurbisher—and verify the term, start date, serial-number or registration requirements, parts and labor coverage, panel exclusions, service geography, and claim process. Best Buy says manufacturer warranty coverage varies by product. Newegg says its open-box products usually do not include a manufacturer or vendor warranty or technical support, and suggests checking with the manufacturer about possible coverage. Treat both as seller-specific terms.

Compare the complete cost, not just the discount
Match the exact model number and screen size. A similar model name or series is not enough: specifications and features can differ. Compare the offer with the same model new or factory-sealed clearance, then account for delivery, taxes, setup, wall mounting if needed, and possible return freight. Best Buy’s guide distinguishes new, factory-sealed clearance from open-box stock, which may have cosmetic wear or missing accessories.
There is no established universal discount percentage that makes an open-box TV a good buy. Weigh the savings against this unit’s condition, completeness, return options, warranty, and potential costs if it must be sent back. An attractive sticker price can be poor value if essential accessories are missing or the return route is costly; a smaller saving may suit a buyer who has verified the condition and protections.
Compare offers with the same questions

Inspect and test the TV as soon as it arrives
- Save the purchase details. Keep the order page, condition description, seller messages, invoice, and delivery paperwork so you can refer to what was promised.
- Document shipping damage. Photograph damage to the carton before unpacking, and keep the box and packing materials until the TV is tested and the return period has passed.
- Report problems within the stated window. Follow the seller’s deadline and reporting procedure for damage, defects, or missing components. Samsung Canada’s terms, for example, instruct customers to inspect the product and carton and set deadlines for certain reports; those instructions apply only to the stated Canadian channels.
- Test the essentials. Check the screen with different content for visible defects or image retention; test speakers, remote, physical controls, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and HDMI ports; and confirm that the stand or mounting hardware is present. Record any issue and contact the seller promptly through the required process.
A listing photo or condition grade does not establish that every panel defect or functional problem has been ruled out. The return window and the seller’s written terms determine what options are available if your inspection finds an issue.
