The reliable method is to check the exact game, edition, storefront and operating system together, then verify hardware, launcher and account requirements, DRM and offline behavior, included expansions, language support, technical fixes and the refund policy that applies at checkout.
Do not treat another edition—or even another storefront’s listing—as proof that your copy will behave the same way. Minimum requirements are a starting point, not a promise of smooth play. Use the checklist below before paying, especially when buying a remaster, bundle, digital re-release or physical disc.

Start with the exact product, not just the game title
Write down four details before comparing anything:
- the exact title and release edition;
- the storefront or physical format;
- the operating system you will use; and
- the PC on which you intend to install it.
An original release, a later digital edition, a remaster and a bundle may have different executables, patches, language files, installers, save behavior and copy-protection rules. A listing for one edition cannot establish the behavior of another. If the title has several versions, open each product page separately and record what is actually included.
Why edition-specific checking matters
GOG’s user agreement explicitly says there is no single set of requirements for all games and directs customers to the relevant product page. That means the product page—not a general assumption about “old games”—is the authority for the listed operating systems and hardware: GOG User Agreement. The same principle applies when you compare editions sold elsewhere.

Match the listing to your actual PC
Check the operating system first
Record your operating-system name and version, including whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit installation where that distinction matters. Compare it with the edition’s supported systems. A listing that names Windows does not automatically answer questions about a particular Windows release, Linux distribution, compatibility layer or handheld operating system.
If you plan to use Linux, a virtual machine, a compatibility layer or a handheld PC, look for notes specific to that setup rather than assuming that a Windows installer will work unchanged. If the store lists several operating systems, verify which installer and update path belongs to the edition you are buying.
Compare every hardware category
Check the listed minimum CPU, memory, graphics hardware, storage requirement and operating-system version against your own machine. Keep the model numbers and available storage in front of you while reading the product page; do not rely on a vague description such as “gaming PC.”
Minimum requirements indicate the publisher’s lower boundary for starting the game under its stated conditions. They do not guarantee a stable frame rate, correct display scaling, reliable input, working audio, fast loading or compatibility with every modern driver. Leave storage headroom for the installer, patches, save files and any optional expansion rather than matching the download size exactly.
Separate “will launch” from “will be pleasant to play”
Older RPGs can be demanding in ways a single hardware list does not capture. A game may launch while still showing an unusable resolution, broken aspect ratio, missing music, unstable video playback or unreliable controller input. Treat those as separate checks. If smooth performance, high-resolution support, widescreen output or a particular control method is essential, find an edition-specific technical note before buying.
Verify the storefront, launcher and account path
List every required component
On the product page and checkout screen, identify whether installation requires:

- a store client;
- a publisher or third-party account;
- one-time activation;
- recurring online authentication;
- an internet connection for downloading updates; or
- any additional software named in the system requirements.
“Can be downloaded” and “can be played offline” are different claims. A client may be needed to obtain the files but not to launch an installed game, or it may be required for updates, cloud saves or multiplayer. Confirm each stage separately: purchase, installation, first launch, later launches, patching and save synchronization.
Understand what a storefront policy does—and does not—prove
GOG’s developer quality guidance states, “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” This requirement describes games submitted to that storefront and is useful when evaluating a GOG edition: GOG Developer Docs: Quality Assurance. It does not establish that a Steam or other-store edition has identical DRM, installers or offline behavior. Check the specific listing and its support notes instead of transferring the policy from one store to another.
Check offline installation and offline play separately
If offline access is a priority, answer all of these questions before purchase:
- Can you download an installer or complete backup while online?
- Can the game be installed without the storefront client running?
- Does first launch require account authentication?
- Can subsequent launches occur without a connection?
- Will updates, cloud saves or bonus files require the client later?
Save screenshots or notes of the answers shown on the current product page. Storefront features and requirements can change, so the edition and date matter.
Compare editions by the features that affect ownership
When multiple editions are available, compare them on the same axes rather than choosing by title alone.

Give the greatest weight to the axis that matches your priority. Someone preserving a game for offline use may value an installer and no activation above cloud saves; someone playing on several computers may prioritize synchronization; someone seeking a particular original version may accept a less convenient launcher to obtain it.

Confirm expansions, languages and version changes
Read the inclusion list, not the marketing name
Look for an explicit list of included campaigns, expansions, downloadable content, manuals, soundtracks and bonus material. “Complete,” “gold,” “classic” and similar labels are not enough by themselves. Check whether content is installed automatically, supplied as a separate download or merely offered for purchase on the same page.
Check language coverage at the edition level
Verify interface, subtitle and voice languages independently when the listing distinguishes them. A game may provide one language for menus and another for speech, or a bundle may include different files from the standalone release. If your language is not shown on the current listing, do not assume it can be added later.
Ask whether fixes are built in
Find out whether the seller’s build includes official patches, display fixes, updated installers or other alterations. A community patch may be useful, but its availability, maintenance and compatibility are separate from what you are buying. Do not assume that a fix used by a different edition can be applied safely to yours.

Search for a title-specific technical reference covering display resolution, input, crashes, save locations, audio, video playback and modern Windows or Linux compatibility. PCGamingWiki’s page for Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness illustrates the right level of specificity: it is a per-game reference, not a universal guarantee for every older RPG: PCGamingWiki: Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness.
Use community documentation to identify questions and possible failure modes, then confirm high-impact claims against the publisher or storefront. Pay particular attention to notes that name an edition, executable, patch level or operating system. A report about one release may not apply to a later reissue.
Technical questions worth answering before checkout
- Does the game support your monitor’s resolution and aspect ratio without a workaround?
- Are there known crashes during startup, cutscenes, area transitions or saving?
- Does it recognize your keyboard, mouse, controller or remapping software?
- Where are saves stored, and can they be backed up manually?
- Are cloud saves supported, and are they compatible with local saves?
- Does the edition require a particular patch order or launch option?
- Are there known conflicts with modern graphics drivers, overlays or antivirus tools?
If a requirement is essential and the current listing does not answer it, treat the gap as unresolved rather than filling it with a guess.

Plan for modern display and input issues
Older RPGs were often designed around display modes, input devices and interfaces that are no longer common. Before buying, identify the resolution and input problems that would make the game unacceptable to you. A title may technically run in a window while still being difficult to read on a high-density display, or it may accept keyboard input but lack usable controller support.
Look for edition-specific instructions on scaling, aspect ratio, windowed mode, subtitles, text size and remapping. If the only available guidance comes from a community forum, use it as a lead and confirm that the instructions match your build. Avoid purchasing on the assumption that a universal widescreen fix or controller profile exists.

Open the refund policy that applies to the storefront and transaction at checkout. Policies differ by seller, product type, payment method and access status. A failed launch is a reason to contact support, not a guarantee that a refund will be granted.
For GOG, the support result advises contacting support when a game is not working and mentions a 30-day period for Early Access games. It does not establish a universal refund right for every GOG purchase or for purchases made on other stores. Read the current policy itself: GOG Voluntary Refund Policy – Orders.
Record the conditions that matter
- the length of the stated refund window;
- whether the policy covers downloads that have started;
- any separate rule for Early Access, bundles or preorders;
- the support channel and information it asks you to provide; and
- whether the policy is voluntary, statutory or both.
Keep your receipt, order number and a short description of any technical failure. Do not wait until after a policy deadline to investigate whether the game launches.

If you are buying a physical disc
A boxed copy adds checks that do not apply to a digital purchase. Confirm that your current PC has a suitable optical drive or that you have a legitimate way to create an installer from the media. Then determine whether installation, activation, updates or multiplayer depends on a service that may no longer operate.
Check the disc’s operating-system requirements, printed serial number, included patches and any manual instructions. A disc can be readable while its activation server, installer dependency or online service is unavailable. Ask the seller for clear information about missing keys and damaged media, and do not assume that a modern digital re-release is identical to the original disc build.
A practical pre-purchase workflow
- Identify the build. Copy the exact title, edition, storefront and operating-system target into a note.
- Capture the requirements. Record CPU, memory, graphics hardware, storage and OS details from the current product page.
- Compare your PC. Check the machine you will actually use, including free storage and the display or input devices that matter to you.
- Map the account path. Note store-client, publisher-account, activation and connection requirements for purchase, installation, first launch and later launches.
- Verify offline behavior. Look for an offline installer and separate statements about offline play; do not infer one from the other.
- Inventory the package. Confirm expansions, downloadable content, languages, bonuses and whether fixes are included.
- Read technical notes. Search the title-specific reference for resolution, input, crash, save and compatibility issues, then confirm critical claims with the seller.
- Read the refund policy. Check the current terms and note the support route before completing payment.
- Decide using your priorities. Choose the edition that satisfies your non-negotiables, not merely the one with the lowest listed price.
- Test promptly. Install and launch while the applicable refund window is open; verify saving, loading, audio, display and controls before investing serious play time.
Warning signs that deserve a pause
- The listing names only a franchise or series, not the exact edition.
- Requirements are missing or refer to a different release.
- The page advertises offline access but does not explain installation, activation or first launch.
- “Complete” content is not itemized.
- Your language is absent from the edition’s language list.
- Technical fixes are described for another storefront build.
- A physical copy requires an activation service whose current status is unclear.
- You cannot find the refund terms before checkout.
Any one of these may have an innocent explanation, but each is a reason to verify the detail rather than rely on reputation or nostalgia.
How to choose when two editions both run
If both editions meet your hardware and operating-system needs, rank the remaining differences according to how you will play. Prefer the edition with the clearest offline installation if you travel or expect long-term preservation. Prefer the edition with dependable cloud saves if you move between computers. Prefer the edition that explicitly includes the expansions, language and fixes you need. If multiplayer, mod support or a specific original version is important, verify those items directly instead of assuming that a newer build is better.

When the choice is close, favor transparent documentation: a complete requirements list, a clear content inventory, explicit account and DRM information, accessible technical notes and a readable refund policy. Those details reduce uncertainty more effectively than a “classic” label or a broad compatibility claim.
What this checklist cannot decide for an unnamed RPG
No general guide can name the correct edition, patch or storefront without the game title, the currently sold builds and your PC configuration. Exact requirements, languages, bundled content and technical issues must be checked for that specific product. If a game’s page and technical references disagree, pause the purchase and ask the seller which build the listing describes.
The goal is not to prove that every old RPG will run on every current computer. It is to make the purchase specific enough that you know what you are buying, what it requires, what you can do offline, what content is included and which remedy is available if the installation fails.
