Before buying an MMO, check four things: how access is paid for, which content the purchase unlocks, what optional purchases do, and what happens if you cancel or request a refund. Then compare the cost for the amount of time and content you actually expect to use—not just the advertised entry price.
Start with the access model
An MMO may offer free access, a one-time purchase, recurring subscription access, or a combination. These models are game-specific, so confirm the rules for the exact game and edition before checkout.

- Free access: Check whether the free version is the full game or has limits on features or content.
- One-time purchase: Find out which game or expansion the purchase unlocks, and whether future content is sold separately.
- Subscription: Check when billing begins, how often it renews, what content membership includes, and how cancellation works.
- Mixed model: Add up the purchase, any recurring fees, and any separately sold content you need.
For example, ArenaNet says Guild Wars 2 can be played for free and does not require a monthly subscription or other fees to play; accounts can also be upgraded with one-time expansion purchases. That describes Guild Wars 2, not every MMO or every possible optional expense.
Check exactly what the edition includes
Edition names such as “Starter,” “Complete,” or “Deluxe” are not a reliable guide to what you own. Read the current product page and confirm the game, expansions, bonuses, and digital items included with that specific purchase. ArenaNet notes that Guild Wars 2 editions and expansions have different included benefits and items, and that some included items are granted only once. Check how those items are handled on your account before purchasing.

- Is the desired expansion included, or must it be bought separately?
- Does the edition grant access to content immediately, or only to a particular account or platform?
- Are listed bonuses usable by every character, or are any granted once?
- Does an upgrade replace or duplicate something you already own?
Estimate the cost for your play pattern
Compare equivalent access over a realistic period. A low initial price may not be the least expensive option if you expect to pay recurring fees or buy several expansions; a subscription may include content that another game sells separately. Do not compare a base-game price with an edition that includes expansions without accounting for that difference.

Use current prices from the relevant publisher or storefront and calculate a total for the period you expect to play—for example, a month, a year, or a few separate play periods. Prices and included benefits can change, so treat a product page as current only when you check it.

Understand subscription terms before paying
Some purchases include a limited period of play before a subscription is required. Square Enix’s EU product page says buyers of the FINAL FANTASY XIV Starter Edition or Complete Edition receive 30 days of free play, after which continued play requires a subscription. The page lists EU membership options and warns that fees can change; check it for current regional terms rather than applying its prices elsewhere.
The same EU page states, “A Game Time Card/Game Time Code cannot be used on the Entry membership tier.” If you plan to use prepaid time, confirm that it works with your region, platform, account, and membership tier before buying.

Subscription cancellation and refunds are separate questions. FINAL FANTASY XIV’s North American support terms say a subscription can be cancelled at any time, but access ends at the conclusion of the paid term and unused days are not refunded. This is a game- and region-specific policy example, not a universal rule.

Look at what each in-game purchase provides and whether it affects access, content, convenience, or appearance. A store existing does not by itself establish that its purchases are required to play; conversely, calling a purchase “optional” does not tell you whether it matters for the content or play style you want.

Blizzard’s March 2, 2015 announcement described a World of Warcraft Token that could be bought in the in-game shop with real money or from other players for in-game gold, and then used for game time. It also said token transactions were final. This is a historical description of the mechanic, not evidence of current pricing or present-day functionality; check current World of Warcraft terms before relying on it.

Refund eligibility can depend on the product, when you request a refund, whether you have launched or used the game, and where you bought it. EA’s help page, for instance, describes conditional eligibility rules, including limits involving DLC and third-party games and conditions for digital subscription cancellations. Its EU withdrawal terms also depend on timing and whether the game was launched. Those are EA-specific rules; they do not establish the policy for another publisher or storefront.
Read the policy that applies to the exact item and seller before paying. ArenaNet says purchases made through its buy site can be submitted to support and advises checking any refund restrictions imposed by your financial institution. A purchase made through another store may be governed by that seller’s process instead.
