Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore paying, verify who is actually selling the iPhone, what the condition grade means, whether the exact model works on your carrier, and how you can return or dispute the transaction. After delivery, inspect the hardware, complete setup far enough to rule out Activation Lock, check battery health and Parts and Service History, and document any mismatch while the return window is open.
Activation Lock is the non-negotiable check: Apple says, “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, do not accept the phone until that owner removes it and the iPhone has been erased.

Start with the seller, not the phone
A retailer’s name on a website does not always identify the business responsible for the particular iPhone. Retailers generally sell their own inventory, while a marketplace may display a listing from an independent seller. The platform may process payment or host the return system without owning the device.
Retailer inventory
Find the retailer’s legal business name, customer-service contact, warranty terms, condition definitions and return instructions. Ask whether the phone is new, open-box, used or refurbished, and what inspection or certification the retailer performs. “Refurbished” is not a single industry-wide standard; one seller may replace a battery and test every function, while another may only confirm that the phone powers on.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Marketplace listings
Identify the seller of record on the individual listing. Record the seller’s displayed name, contact details, location when shown, feedback history and the party that handles returns. Read both the marketplace’s buyer-protection rules and the seller’s own policy. A platform can provide the checkout interface while the seller remains responsible for the item’s condition.
| Question | Retailer listing | Marketplace listing |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplied the device? | The retailer, unless the site explicitly identifies another seller. | A named third-party seller may supply it; confirm on the listing. |
| Who sets the condition grade? | The retailer’s grading system. | The individual seller’s grading system, sometimes displayed through the platform. |
| Who handles a return? | Follow the retailer’s stated process. | Check whether the seller or platform must authorize and receive the return. |
| Where is a dispute filed? | With the retailer and, if applicable, your payment provider. | Usually through the platform’s prescribed dispute channel, with payment protections considered separately. |
Do not treat seller identity disclosures as proof that a phone is genuine, unlocked or in good condition. In the United States, the INFORM Consumers Act requires covered online marketplaces to collect and verify information for certain high-volume third-party sellers and disclose specified identity and contact information. The law took effect June 27, 2023, but its definitions and exceptions are limited; it is not a certification or warranty.
Decode what the listing actually promises
Ask what the grade includes
“Excellent,” “Grade A,” “like new” and “refurbished” have meaning only within that seller’s system. Look for a written description of acceptable screen scratches, dents, worn finishes, camera marks, missing accessories and battery capacity. If the listing does not define the grade, ask before paying and save the answer.

Request device-specific evidence
Stock photographs can hide a defect on the particular phone. Request clear photographs of the display, frame, back, camera lenses, charging connector and the About screen when condition matters. Ask in writing for the current maximum battery capacity, any battery warning, the Parts and Service History entries, whether Face ID or Touch ID works, and whether the phone is carrier-locked. A seller who will not answer basic condition questions increases your risk.
Separate certification from marketing
Ask what the seller’s certification process checks: parts, battery, cameras, microphones, speakers, biometric sensors, wireless charging, cellular connectivity and erasure. Do not assume that a retailer’s use of “certified” means it follows Apple’s inspection or repair standards. Compare the stated testing, warranty and return remedy with the price.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Read the return, warranty and dispute terms before checkout
A low price is not useful if the remedy for an Activation Lock, dead battery or inaccurate grade is unclear. Before paying, answer these questions and keep screenshots of the answers:
- How long is the return period? Note the exact number of calendar or business days and when the clock starts: purchase, shipment or delivery.
- Which reasons qualify? Check whether “not as described,” defective, wrong model and buyer’s remorse are treated differently.
- How do you initiate a return? Some sellers require a portal, message or authorization number before accepting a package.
- Who pays shipping? Determine whether return postage is prepaid for a defect or description mismatch and whether an original shipping charge is refundable.
- What condition must the phone be in? Ask about restocking deductions, accessories, packaging, data removal and inspection after receipt.
- What warranty remains? Record its duration, exclusions, geographic limits and whether the seller or manufacturer provides service.
- What is the dispute deadline? Marketplace and payment-service windows can expire before a general warranty does.
Use the marketplace’s internal checkout and messaging when its rules require that route. Paying a seller directly, moving the conversation off-platform or using an arrangement excluded from buyer protection can remove the very recourse you were counting on. A card or payment service may offer additional protections, but no payment method guarantees a refund or chargeback; verify that the protection applies to this seller and item.
Confirm the exact model will work for you
“Unlocked” in a title is not enough to establish compatibility with every carrier or plan. Before purchase, give your intended carrier the exact model identifier and, when available, the phone’s regional model information. Ask whether the model supports the carrier’s network, whether a carrier lock may remain, and whether the plan has activation requirements.
The reviewed guidance does not establish a single universal stolen-device or carrier-compatibility check that works in every country and for every carrier. Treat the carrier’s confirmation and the seller’s written statement as separate pieces of evidence. Keep the listing language if the delivered phone does not match it.
Inspect in person or immediately after delivery
Inspect while a return remedy is still available. Remove the case and any screen protector supplied by the seller so it cannot conceal damage. Compare the phone with the listing photographs and description before transferring personal data.

Physical and charging inspection
- Examine the display under good light for cracks, deep scratches, bright or dark spots and touch areas that do not respond.
- Check the sides and back for dents, separation, gaps, bent corners or camera-lens damage.
- Look into the Lightning or USB-C connector, depending on the model, for packed debris, corrosion or bent contacts.
- Press the power and volume buttons and check the mute or Action switch where fitted.
- Turn the iPhone on. If it will not start, charge it with a known-good compatible cable and adapter. Apple’s pre-owned-device guidance says not to buy an iPhone that will not charge.
If a passcode or biometric lock prevents an in-person inspection, ask the seller to erase the iPhone so you can test it. Do not rely on a promise that the passcode will be removed later.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Activation Lock: the stop condition
An iPhone showing the Hello screen has been erased, but it is not yet proven safe to take ownership. Complete setup far enough to connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service and reach the point where the phone verifies activation.
- Start setup from the Hello screen.
- Follow the prompts until the phone asks for activation information.
- If it requests the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials, stop. The device remains linked to that account.
- Have the previous owner enter the credentials themselves or remove the iPhone from their account, then erase it again.
- Restart setup and confirm that your own Apple Account can activate the phone without the previous owner’s credentials.
Apple’s Activation Lock guidance says, “Don’t take ownership of any used iPhone or iPad until it’s been removed from the previous owner’s account.” Do not accept assurances that Activation Lock can be bypassed after the sale. If an online delivery displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” return it through the required seller or marketplace process.
Test the functions that matter to you
Once you reach the Home Screen, test before restoring a backup. Insert your SIM or follow your carrier’s eSIM activation process only after confirming that you intend to keep the phone. Make a call, send a text, use cellular data, connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and test GPS if navigation is important.
- Open the camera and test every rear and front camera, focus, flash and video recording.
- Play audio through the speakers, make a call on speakerphone and record a short voice memo to check microphones.
- Test the display across its edges, automatic brightness, orientation and any stylus or accessory feature you need.
- Try Face ID or Touch ID, the power and volume controls, vibration, wireless charging and wired charging.
- Check the model, storage capacity and serial or IMEI details in Settings and compare them with the listing and your purchase record. These details help identify a mismatch but do not, by themselves, prove authenticity or ownership.
Photograph or record a defect, the setup screen, battery reading and relevant settings. Keep the original packaging and accessories until you decide to keep the phone.

Check battery health instead of trusting a grade
On iPhone 6 and later with iOS 11.3 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iOS 16.1 or later, the menu is labeled Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity and any message indicating that the battery is significantly degraded, cannot be verified or needs service.
Maximum capacity is one factor, not a pass/fail certification. Weigh it against the asking price, disclosed physical condition, repair history, seller remedy and the likely cost and availability of a replacement battery in your area. A high reading does not erase an Activation Lock or carrier problem, and a lower reading may be acceptable only when the price and return terms reflect it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read Parts and Service History with its limits
On iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About. If the model and repaired component are supported, a Parts and Service History section may appear. Apple’s current documentation lists the following coverage:
| iPhone models | Parts that may be listed |
|---|---|
| iPhone 12 models and later | Battery, display, logic board, front camera and rear cameras |
| iPhone 11 models | Battery and display |
| iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) | Battery |
Older iOS versions show less information. If a component was serviced multiple times, only the most recent service appears. A missing section or missing component entry therefore does not prove that no repair occurred.

| Label | Apple’s meaning | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine | The repair used genuine Apple parts and processes. | Which component was replaced, when, and is any coverage still available? |
| Unknown | In some situations a nongenuine part was used or a part is not working as expected. | What was replaced, does every related feature work, and what remedy does the seller provide? |
| Unverified | The logic board was previously replaced; Apple says this may affect features such as Apple Pay. | Has the seller tested the affected features and disclosed the board replacement? |
| Used | The part was previously used or installed in another iPhone. | What condition is the part in, and how does the seller price or warrant it? |
Describe the label exactly rather than treating the screen as a blanket pass or fail. Ask the seller to explain any entry and decide whether the repair, remaining coverage and expected use fit your needs.

Build a written record before a problem appears
Save the listing URL, title, photographs, condition grade, stated battery information, seller identity, messages, invoice, tracking information and policy pages as PDFs or screenshots. Record the delivery date and the last day to start a return or marketplace dispute. If the phone differs from the listing, describe the discrepancy in the platform’s required channel, attach photographs and request the stated remedy promptly.
Keep communications factual: identify the model, quote the listing language, state what the device shows and ask for a specific return or replacement instruction. Do not erase evidence before the seller or platform has recorded the complaint. Follow any requirement to sign out of your Apple Account, erase the device and use tracked shipping only after the return is authorized.
Compare two listings on the same risk factors
When prices are close, compare the parts that determine your ability to recover from a bad purchase, not just storage capacity or cosmetic grade.

A cheaper listing with vague seller identity, no battery information and a short or unclear return window can carry more financial risk than a higher-priced phone with documented testing and straightforward recourse.
Quick Recap
Red flags that justify walking away
- The seller refuses to identify who owns or ships the phone.
- The listing uses a grade without defining it and will not provide device-specific photos or answers.
- The seller asks you to pay outside the marketplace or communicate only through an unprotected channel.
- The phone will not power on or charge during inspection.
- Setup requests a previous owner’s Apple Account, or the device shows “iPhone Locked to Owner.”
- The seller’s written claims about battery, storage, model or carrier status conflict with the phone’s Settings screens.
- The return deadline, authorization process or shipping responsibility is unclear.
- A Parts and Service History warning is dismissed without an explanation of the component and its effect on features.
A practical decision sequence
- Identify the accountable seller. Record the seller of record, contact method, condition definition and return policy.
- Ask for missing facts. Obtain actual-device photos, battery information, repair-history details and carrier-lock answers in writing.
- Confirm network fit. Give your carrier the exact model and verify compatibility and any lock requirements.
- Choose a protected payment route. Stay within marketplace checkout when required and confirm applicable card or payment-service protections.
- Inspect immediately. Check physical condition, charging, setup, Activation Lock, battery, repair history and the functions you need.
- Preserve evidence. Save the listing and record discrepancies before the return or dispute deadline expires.
- Return rather than rationalize. An Activation Lock, unfixable carrier mismatch, major undisclosed damage or missing remedy is a reason to use the documented return process, not a problem to solve after the window closes.
