What to Check Before Buying an Indie Game: Platforms, Accessibility, and Refunds

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Before buying an indie game, verify three separate things: the exact device and edition listed, the game-specific accessibility features you need, and the refund policy of the store that will process your payment. A game can run on one console generation but not another, offer a demo but not the full edition, or carry a store tag that does not describe the particular feature you require. Refund rights also change when you buy through a different storefront, download or stream the content, or purchase DLC, a preorder, or a consumable.

Use the game’s own listing and the seller’s current regional policy as your final checklist. The steps below show what to confirm before checkout and what to do when the listing leaves an important question unanswered.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with the exact product and checkout path

Do not treat “available on PC” or “available on console” as a complete compatibility statement. A purchase is tied to a specific edition, platform account and storefront. Confirm each of those details on the page where you intend to pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the platform, generation and operating system

  • Identify the exact platform named in the listing, such as a particular console generation, handheld version or Windows/macOS release.
  • For a PC purchase, read the listed operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage and any launcher or account requirement. A game may support one desktop operating system while excluding another.
  • Check whether the listing covers a native release, backward-compatible version, cloud-streamed version or a separate port. Do not assume that a console license transfers to a PC, another console family or a different store.
  • Look for controller, keyboard, mouse, online-service, internet and account requirements. These are title-specific; there is no universal hardware or connectivity requirement for indie games.

If the page shows several platform icons, open the detailed edition information instead of relying on the icons. A bundle may include only some of the listed versions, and a soundtrack, artbook or DLC may be sold separately.

Identify what you are actually buying

Listing type Check before payment Why it changes the decision
Full game Platform, edition, language options and any online or account requirement. This is the product to which the store’s ordinary game-refund rule usually applies.
Demo or trial Whether progress carries into the full game and whether the demo is a separate download. A demo can reveal performance and controls, but it is not proof that the full edition has identical content or settings.
Early access Current feature set, roadmap wording, save compatibility and whether playtime is counted immediately. On Steam, Early Access time counts toward the two-hour refund limit.
DLC or expansion Which base game and platform are required, and whether the add-on has been used, modified or transferred. DLC refund conditions can differ from the full-game rule.
Bundle Every item included, duplicate ownership rules and whether the store treats the bundle as one product. Returning one component may be restricted by the bundle’s terms.
Preorder Release date, any preorder-only content and whether the game is playable before launch. Some stores start the refund clock at release rather than the preorder date.

Find the point of purchase

The storefront shown at checkout determines where you request help and which refund policy applies. A console account, a PC launcher, a third-party code seller and a payment provider can create different support boundaries. Steam states that Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys, in its Steam Refunds policy. Epic likewise says that a purchase made through another store or checkout provider follows that seller’s policy; its Epic Games Store Refund Policy describes the scope of its own checkout.

Before entering payment details, record the store name, account used, product title and edition. Keep the receipt or order number. Those details make it easier to identify the correct policy if the game is later removed, relisted or split into platform-specific editions.

Evaluate accessibility as a game-specific requirement

Accessibility is not a genre feature and cannot be inferred from a game’s art style, rating or platform. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 121 says, “Information about a game’s accessibility features and settings options should be available for players to review before purchase.” The full guideline explains why documentation must be easy to find before someone commits money.

Start with the player’s actual access needs, then look for explicit evidence in the game listing, the developer’s support page, a demo or a manual. A label such as “subtitles” does not answer whether subtitles identify speakers, include important sound effects, remain readable at the chosen size or appear during every cinematic.

Captions and subtitles

  • Check whether spoken dialogue has subtitles and whether different speakers are identified.
  • Look for text-size, contrast, background, timing and positioning controls.
  • For players who cannot hear important sounds, verify whether meaningful non-speech cues—such as alarms, footsteps or off-screen attacks—are represented visually.
  • Confirm that subtitles cover cinematics, tutorials, menus and scripted radio or environmental dialogue, not only the main story.

Missing visual information can make a game unplayable for some players. If the listing only says “subtitles,” ask the developer what is covered and whether the setting can be changed before the first required sequence.

Audio, visual and text settings

  • Look for independent volume sliders for dialogue, effects, music and voice chat, plus mute or dynamic-range options.
  • Check brightness, contrast, color filters, flash reduction, motion reduction, field of view, text scaling and UI magnification where relevant.
  • Ask whether menus and gameplay use the same text scale and whether important status information is conveyed by color alone.
  • For blind or low-vision players, verify narration, screen-reader output, menu navigation and audio descriptions rather than assuming the platform’s system accessibility features will cover the game.

Input, controller and motor access

  • Confirm keyboard and controller support for the intended device, including whether all actions can be remapped.
  • Check for toggle alternatives to holding a button, adjustable hold or repeat timing, simplified controls, aim assistance and one-stick or single-input modes.
  • Look for support for standard and adaptive controllers, and note whether the game requires simultaneous buttons, rapid repeated presses or precise analog movement.
  • Find out whether remapping works in menus as well as gameplay and whether the game recognizes the controller before a mandatory opening sequence.

Difficulty, pacing and cognitive load

  • Read what each difficulty mode changes. A “story” mode may reduce damage but leave timed events, stealth requirements or puzzle penalties unchanged.
  • Check for adjustable game speed, pause during cutscenes, skip options, practice areas, aim or navigation assists, and the ability to retry a section without repeating long scenes.
  • Verify whether accessibility settings can be changed at any time or only from the main menu. A setting that is unavailable during a required cinematic may arrive too late.

Use accessibility tags as a starting point, not a guarantee

Store tags can help you locate relevant information, but a tag is not a complete suitability test. Microsoft’s Accessibility Feature Tags documentation (version 2.0.1, published 14 March 2025) defines criteria for individual features. The criteria improve consistency, but they do not measure how well a particular implementation meets every player’s needs.

Supported PS5 Store listings can display tags covering visual and audio settings, controller options, difficulty and online communication features. PlayStation describes the system on its accessibility features page. Treat those tags as prompts to open the game’s details, not as a promise that every related option is present in every mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the listing is sparse

  1. Search the developer’s official game page, support documentation and patch notes for a feature list.
  2. Watch an unedited gameplay video or use a demo to inspect menus, subtitle presentation, remapping and visual effects.
  3. Ask a specific question through the developer’s support channel. “Does it support accessibility?” is too broad; ask, for example, whether non-speech sounds are captioned, whether all actions can be remapped or whether screen-reader narration covers menus.
  4. Save the answer and the date. Features can change through patches, and a launch announcement may not describe the current build.

Compare refund rules before you buy

Refund policies are store rules, not a universal legal standard. The same game can have different eligibility depending on where you paid, whether you downloaded or played it, the product category and your region. Local consumer law may add rights, so open the policy page for your country and the exact product type immediately before checkout.

Store and scope General rule in the cited policy Important limits and exceptions
Steam Request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime for games and software. For a preorder that was not playable before release, the 14-day period starts on release. Early Access playtime counts. DLC has separate conditions, including whether it was consumed, modified or transferred. Purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party CD keys, are not refundable by Valve. The policy page states it was last updated 23 April 2024.
Epic Games Store, PC/Mac Generally within 14 days and with less than two hours of runtime for products marked refundable or self-refundable. The eligibility marking matters; mobile terms differ. A purchase made through another store or payment provider follows that point of purchase. Epic notes that statutory rights may apply, including EU withdrawal rights.
PlayStation Store, United States For full games and DLC, generally request within 14 days and do not download or stream the content. Faulty content and applicable local-law rights can create additional remedies. Preorders, subscriptions and consumables have separate criteria. This is the US policy page; do not apply it automatically to another country.

Steam: watch playtime, Early Access and DLC

Steam’s ordinary game rule combines a 14-day request window with a two-hour playtime limit. If you buy before release and cannot play until launch, the 14-day period begins on the release date. Playing an Early Access build uses the same playtime allowance, so testing an unfinished game can reduce the time available to decide whether to keep it.

DLC is assessed separately. Consumption, modification or transfer can affect eligibility. If a key or gift was obtained outside Steam, contact the seller that took payment; Valve’s refund form does not cover that transaction.

Epic: check the product’s refund label

For PC and Mac, Epic generally covers products explicitly marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” when the request is within 14 days and runtime is below two hours. Do not assume that every item in a bundle or every mobile purchase uses those terms. If checkout was completed by another store or provider, submit the request there instead. The policy also preserves statutory rights that may apply in your jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation Store in the United States: do not download first

The linked US PlayStation support page generally requires a refund request within 14 days for games and DLC and says the content must not have been downloaded or streamed. That makes a pre-purchase check especially important: downloading a title to test performance can remove the ordinary eligibility route. Faulty-content rules and local law may provide a different path. Preorders, subscriptions and consumables have their own conditions, so read those sections rather than applying the full-game rule.

Region and product type can change the answer

The PlayStation page above is specifically for the United States. Epic’s terms distinguish mobile purchases, and all three stores separate categories such as DLC, subscriptions, consumables and preorders. If you are in another country, use the regional support page shown by your account and consider statutory consumer rights before relying on a store’s standard window.

A practical pre-purchase workflow

Use this sequence for any indie game you are considering. It takes only a few minutes when the listing is complete and exposes the most expensive mistakes before payment.

  1. Open the exact store page. Confirm the storefront, currency, account and seller. Do not begin from a search result that combines several platform editions.
  2. Match the device. Check console generation or PC operating system, hardware requirements, storage and required online services. If the game is a bundle, verify that your device is included.
  3. Classify the product. Mark whether it is a full game, demo, Early Access title, DLC, bundle or preorder. Note the release date and whether you can play immediately.
  4. Write down your access requirements. For example: speaker labels, visual sound cues, large text, remappable controls, no-hold input, reduced flashing or a non-timed mode.
  5. Inspect the game-specific evidence. Read the feature list, accessibility tags, developer documentation, demo menus and recent patch notes. Separate an explicit feature from a general platform capability.
  6. Resolve unknowns. Ask the developer or store support a precise question. If a required feature is not confirmed, treat it as unavailable rather than assuming it will be added.
  7. Open the seller’s regional refund policy. Check the request window, playtime or download threshold, product-category rules and any eligibility label.
  8. Plan a safe test. If the store permits playtime, test controls, captions, menus and performance first. On a store whose ordinary policy requires that content not be downloaded or streamed, do not download merely to investigate refund eligibility.
  9. Keep evidence. Save the receipt, order number, product page, accessibility description and any support response. Record the date because listings and policies can change.
  10. Buy only when the three checks agree. Proceed when the platform works, the required accessibility features are confirmed and the refund conditions are acceptable for your region and product type.

Common problems and what to do

Problem Likely cause Best next step
You bought a code that does not work on your device. The code is for another platform, region or storefront. Contact the seller that issued the code. Steam does not refund purchases made outside Steam.
A tag says “subtitles,” but a required scene has no useful captions. The tag identifies a broad feature, not its coverage, speaker labels or sound-effect treatment. Ask the developer for exact coverage and request a refund through the purchasing store if its conditions are met.
You exceeded the playtime limit while testing. Early Access, troubleshooting or repeated launches consumed the store’s measured runtime. Submit the request promptly with a clear explanation; eligibility is not guaranteed once the published threshold is exceeded.
You downloaded a PlayStation game before checking accessibility. The US PlayStation Store’s ordinary game rule generally requires that content not have been downloaded or streamed. Review the faulty-content and local-law sections and contact PlayStation support; do not assume the standard route remains available.
A preorder’s refund deadline seems to have passed before launch. Preorder timing is handled separately from an immediately playable purchase. Check the store’s preorder section. Steam says the 14-day period for an unplayable preorder begins on release.
A controller works in the operating system but not in the game. The title may require a particular input mode, launcher setting or supported controller type. Check the game’s own input documentation, try the listed connection mode and ask support whether remapping is available in menus and gameplay.

Questions worth asking before checkout

  • Is this the native version for my exact platform and generation, and is the license tied to this storefront?
  • Are captions available for all dialogue, with speaker identification and visual representation of important non-speech sounds?
  • Can every essential action be remapped, and are there toggle alternatives to holding or rapidly pressing a button?
  • Can I change text size, contrast, flash or motion settings, and are those options available before the first required scene?
  • Does the chosen difficulty remove or alter timed sections, repeated inputs or other barriers that matter to me?
  • Is the product marked refundable or self-refundable, and what happens if it is downloaded, streamed, played, consumed or bought through a third party?
  • Which regional policy governs my order, and are preorders, DLC, subscriptions or consumables treated separately?

A clear answer to these questions is more valuable than a platform badge or a broad accessibility label. Match the evidence to the player, then match the refund rule to the store and region that will actually take the payment.
