A familiar marketing name is not enough: regional variants can differ in bands, features, service coverage, and paperwork.
1. Check every IMEI before paying
Ask the seller for the IMEI number or numbers on the box or invoice, then compare them with the handset’s displayed IMEI. On many phones, dialing *#06# displays the IMEI. Dual-SIM devices may have more than one, so check each relevant number rather than assuming one covers the whole phone.

The Department of Telecommunications’ CEIR guidance says consumers can check validity before purchase. It describes sending KYM <15 digit IMEI number> by SMS to 14422 as one checking method. Do not buy a handset if the status is blacklisted, duplicate, or already in use: CEIR says, “If the status of the mobile is shown as Black-listed, duplicate or already in use, please avoid buying the mobile.” See the CEIR guidance on checking a mobile device’s IMEI.

2. Ask for evidence tied to the exact model and import
IMEI registration and import compliance
Ask the seller or importer to explain what registration or certificate applies to the specific model and import. Device Setu, also known as ICDR, is the Government of India platform described for issuing IMEI certificates for IMEI-based mobile devices imported through customs ports. Its FAQ outlines importer-side steps involving company and importer registration, OEM and model details, IMEIs, and certificate generation. That process description does not by itself prove that a particular retail unit or listing complied. Request evidence that connects the exact model and shipment to the applicable process. Wireless equipment approval
Ask what WPC Equipment Type Approval (ETA) applies to the exact device and import circumstances. The Department of Telecommunications says ETA is required for covered wireless communication devices that operate in de-licensed bands or involve RF transmission. Its guidance describes self-declaration as an option for specified finished products, including smartphones, when the stated conditions are met. This general rule does not establish that every imported phone needs identical paperwork or that a particular model is approved. See the DoT guidance on WPC ETA.
A DoT document dated 2018 says individual self-certification that a mobile handset has a genuine IMEI will suffice for listed cases including passenger baggage and online cross-border sales. It is a narrow, dated statement, not a complete account of current customs or import requirements; check whether it applies to your present route. See the 2018 DoT document on IMEI import rules.

A Ministry of Communications release dated 17 November 2025 describes mandatory IMEI registration for relevant IMEI-bearing telecom equipment imported for sale, testing, R&D, or other purposes through Device Setu. It also advises used-device buyers to check the national database. Ask the importer how that requirement applies to the unit you are considering. 3. Confirm the exact variant will work on your Indian network
Get the full model or variant code—not just the phone’s product name—and compare it with the current specifications of the Indian carrier and plan you intend to use. Check the bands and features you actually need, including 4G or 5G support, VoLTE, carrier aggregation, and eSIM. A phone can accept a SIM yet still lack a band or calling feature needed for reliable service. No device-specific compatibility conclusion is possible without the exact handset and carrier.

4. Put warranty, repairs, and returns in writing
Before purchase, get clear written answers from the seller and, where possible, the manufacturer for the imported regional variant:
- Will the manufacturer recognize this variant for warranty service in India?
- Where can it be repaired, and who pays shipping or inspection costs?
- Who is responsible if it arrives faulty or develops a fault?
- What are the seller’s return, replacement, and refund conditions, and by what deadline must you act?
Do not infer Indian warranty coverage from a global brand name or an “international warranty” label. Coverage and service access depend on the manufacturer’s and seller’s terms for the exact product.

5. Check the cost for your specific import route
Identify whether the phone is being brought in as passenger baggage, bought through a cross-border online transaction, or sold as a commercial import by an Indian retailer. Customs treatment and charges can depend on the route and current rules. Ask for an itemised total landed cost and verify the applicable requirements before committing; there is no single cost figure that can be responsibly applied to all three routes here.

Use a simple pre-payment decision
- Get the exact variant code and all IMEIs from the seller.
- Verify each IMEI and reject a device with a blacklisted, duplicate, or already-in-use status.
- Request model- and route-specific compliance evidence from the seller or importer.
- Confirm the variant’s bands and features against your intended Indian carrier.
- Save written warranty, repair, return, and refund terms.
- Confirm the total cost and route-specific import treatment before transferring payment.
