Will the exact phone work with your carrier?
Start with the precise model number or SKU and its sales region—not just the phone’s family name. Anatel, Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, warns that an imported device can differ technically from a locally approved phone sold under the same brand and model, including in supported cellular frequencies. Its guidance on buying mobile phones explains that missing local frequency bands can mean no service, fewer compatible operators, or reduced technology support. In some cases, the phone may be limited to 3G if it lacks frequencies used for local 4G.

Compare bands and carrier acceptance
Ask the seller for documentation or a clear photo showing the exact model/SKU and region. Compare that variant’s manufacturer-published radio bands with the destination carrier’s current requirements, and use the carrier’s own device or IMEI checker if available. Band support is necessary, but it does not by itself guarantee VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, eSIM, or other carrier-specific features.

Is the phone unlocked, and are there outstanding obligations?
Confirm in writing that the unit is factory-unlocked, or get the unlocking process, timing, and conditions from the seller. Anatel warns that imported phones may be locked to their original operator and says the originating carrier or seller may have to unlock them. Check for unpaid financing, contract restrictions, or minimum-service commitments that could prevent unlocking or limit use. Google Fi, for example, requires an unlocked device for its service.
Do the IMEIs match and show no restrictions?
Before completing the purchase, compare every IMEI shown on the phone with the number or numbers on its box and invoice. Multi-SIM devices may have more than one IMEI, so check each one. Anatel’s pre-purchase guidance recommends checking IMEI consistency and consulting the appropriate status service for irregularities, theft, loss, or other restrictions. Outside Brazil, use the destination country’s official regulator or carrier process where one exists.

Can you import and use it legally in your country?
Check local radio approval or certification requirements, personal-import rules, customs procedures, and taxes with official sources for the destination country. These rules are not universal. In Brazil specifically, Anatel says a phone bought from a foreign website may be inspected by Anatel and Receita Federal and may be barred from entry. The regulator also warns that non-approved equipment may not have undergone its battery and charger safety testing.
Will the software, SIM setup, and updates meet your needs?
Confirm the exact unit’s physical SIM count, eSIM support, software region or ROM, Google Play Protect certification status, and update policy. Do not assume that a feature advertised for a model family is enabled on every regional variant. Google Fi’s checker can help establish compatibility and eSIM support for that service. Google provides an official page to check Play Protect certification status; verify the specific unit rather than inferring certification from its model name.

Also check practical setup details such as the charger plug and voltage requirements. The seller’s description should identify the software installed on the unit being sold, not simply list features available on another regional version.
What does “no local warranty” mean for your actual costs?
Warranty coverage depends on the manufacturer, country, exact device, and seller. The cited official guidance does not establish whether a particular manufacturer will service an imported phone locally, or what remedies apply against a particular overseas seller. Ask for the warranty terms in writing and confirm:

- Who is responsible for repairs: the manufacturer, the seller, or a third party?
- Where must the phone be sent, and who pays shipping and any customs charges?
- Are local repair centers excluded, and are parts available for this regional model?
- What return period applies if the phone arrives locked, differs from the listing, or fails a compatibility check?
Keep the product listing, seller identity, invoice, written warranty, and return terms. Compare the total landed cost and likely repair or shipping expense with a locally sold version that has local support; checkout price alone is not the full cost.
Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Get the exact model number/SKU and sales region from the seller.
- Match that variant’s published bands against the destination carrier, then use the carrier’s device or IMEI checker where offered.
- Obtain confirmation of factory-unlocked status or the unlocking process, and check financing or service obligations.
- Match every phone IMEI against the box and invoice; check all IMEIs with the destination’s official status service if available.
- Verify local approval, personal-import, customs, and tax rules through official destination-country sources.
- Confirm physical SIM and eSIM configuration, software region, Play Protect certification, update support, and charger requirements for the exact unit.
- Save the listing and written terms; establish the return window, repair location, shipping responsibility, and warranty scope.
- Compare total landed and plausible repair costs with a locally supported alternative.
