An AI label is not a security, privacy, or support guarantee. Before buying, establish what the device collects, where AI processing occurs, who can access the data, how the account and hardware are protected, how long updates will continue, and which controls you get in the companion app. Then judge those answers against the sensitivity of the data and the device’s purpose.
This checklist applies across connected cameras, speakers, televisions, wearables, appliances, computers and other smart-home products. The right trade-off differs by category, so compare products on documented data practices and support commitments rather than on an AI feature list alone.

The five checks that should decide your purchase
| Check | Questions to answer before paying | Evidence to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Data lifecycle | What does the AI feature collect? Is processing on the device, through an account-connected service, or both? How long is information retained, and is it shared? | Current product privacy notice, AI-feature documentation and deletion controls |
| Access and security | Can you use a unique password, multifactor authentication and secure device authentication? Are encryption and login-rate limits described? | Security documentation and account settings |
| Support lifecycle | What is covered by the warranty? How are updates delivered? Is there a stated support period, and what happens when it ends? | Warranty, support policy, update notes and end-of-support terms |
| App and permissions | Is an account, internet connection or phone app mandatory? What permissions does the app request, and which AI functions can you disable? | App-store permission list, setup guide and in-device privacy controls |
| Fit and evidence | Does the product suit your use and data sensitivity? Are security labels and AI claims backed by specific documentation? | Category-specific requirements and independent, dated standards information |
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says reasonable security depends on the device’s function, the type and amount of information collected, who receives it, and the nature and likelihood of risks. That is why a fitness tracker, indoor camera and kitchen appliance should not be judged with identical priorities. See the FTC’s Careful Connections: Keeping the Internet of Things Secure guidance.

Identify every input
Do not stop at “uses AI.” List the sensors and content the feature can access: microphone recordings, camera frames, location, contacts, movement, health measurements, typed text, files, device-usage logs or information inferred from those inputs. A product may collect data even when you are not actively using its headline feature, because background detection, wake-word handling or diagnostics can be part of normal operation.

Ask whether the AI uses only data you deliberately submit or also receives ambient, historical or account-linked information. For a shared household device, determine whether visitors and other family members are captured and whether they can request deletion.
Find out where processing happens
Documentation should distinguish processing on the device from processing by a cloud or account-connected service. On-device processing does not automatically answer every privacy question, and cloud processing does not by itself prove misuse; the important issue is what leaves the device, for what purpose and under which controls. Check whether a network connection is required for initial setup, ordinary operation, model updates or only optional features.
If the maker says data is “encrypted” or “private,” look for the scope: encryption in transit, encryption at rest, access by support personnel, and whether recordings or prompts are used to improve the service. Vague marketing language is not a retention policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Check retention, deletion and sharing
Look for a retention period or a clear explanation of how long raw inputs, derived profiles and diagnostic logs remain available. Confirm whether deleting a recording also deletes transcripts, embeddings, summaries or backups, and whether deletion is available in the app or requires an account request.

Ask which parties receive information: service providers, analytics companies, advertisers, affiliates, emergency contacts or other users you authorize. The FTC’s Consumer Privacy guidance advises examining what connected products collect and with whom it is shared. Read the current U.S. privacy documentation for the exact model and AI feature; policies can differ by region, edition and service tier.
2. Test account and device access controls
Require individual credentials
During setup, replace any default or widely shared password with a unique credential. Determine whether the product supports separate household users, role-based access and a way to revoke a former resident’s access. A device that cannot distinguish an owner from every other user may be unsuitable for sensitive rooms, health data or confidential work.
Turn on stronger authentication
Use multifactor authentication (MFA) on the account whenever it is supported, and check how recovery works if a phone or authenticator is lost. Verify that the device itself cannot be controlled solely through an unprotected local interface, Bluetooth pairing or a shared household code.
Look for protective security behavior
Security documentation should address encryption, secure pairing, credential storage and what happens after repeated failed logins. The FTC’s connected-device guidance specifically discusses encryption and limiting repeated unsuccessful attempts. A product need not publish implementation secrets, but it should explain the protections and how you receive security notices.

Also ask whether you can view active sessions, revoke tokens, remove a lost device from your account and export an access history. These controls matter more when the AI feature can unlock doors, place orders, reveal location or expose conversations.
3. Verify the support and update lifecycle
Read the warranty and support policy
Find the warranty duration, geographic coverage, exclusions and repair or replacement process. Separately locate the software-support policy: a hardware warranty does not necessarily promise security updates for the same period. Check whether support applies to the exact model, not merely to a product family or current generation.
Understand how updates arrive
Determine whether updates install automatically, require the app, need manual downloads or depend on an active subscription. Ask whether an update can change AI behavior, permissions or local-storage requirements, and whether you can see a version history. The FTC’s January 2018 advice for connected-home buyers recommends updating devices because critical security updates may be necessary; it also tells buyers to review warranty and support policies. See Buying or selling a “smart” home? Read this.
Plan for end of support
Before purchase, write down what still works if cloud support ends: local controls, saved data, emergency functions, recordings and integrations. A device that becomes unusable without a remote service has a different ownership risk from one that continues basic operation offline. If the maker gives no support horizon or end-of-service explanation, treat that uncertainty as a cost and a reason to keep shopping.

4. Inspect the companion app, account and network requirements
Separate mandatory from optional connections
Read the setup guide before buying. Mark each requirement as mandatory or optional: account creation, internet access, smartphone app, location permission, Bluetooth, contacts, camera, microphone, notifications and background activity. Some products advertise local controls but still require an account for setup, diagnostics or AI model updates.
Review app permissions before installation
Check the current permission list in your phone’s app store and operating-system settings. Ask why each permission is needed and whether the app works when it is denied. Limit access to the minimum necessary, and revisit permissions after updates because an app’s functionality can change.
Locate privacy and feature switches
Identify controls for microphones, cameras, presence detection, personalized results, voice history, diagnostics, data sharing and remote access. Test whether disabling an AI function disables only that function or the entire device. If the app offers a “delete history” button, confirm what categories it covers and whether deletion is immediate or queued.
5. Treat security labels and AI claims as evidence to inspect
A badge can be useful shorthand, but it is not proof that every privacy, security or performance question has been answered. NIST’s CSWP 24, Recommended Criteria for Cybersecurity Labeling for Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) Products, published February 4, 2022, sets out recommended criteria and considerations for consumer-IoT cybersecurity labels. It describes possible schemes; it does not certify that a particular product has no vulnerabilities or that its AI is accurate.
Best Value
NIST’s IR 8425, Profile of the IoT Core Baseline for Consumer IoT Products, published September 19, 2022, frames cybersecurity capabilities as outcomes for the product as a whole. Use that perspective when a label covers hardware security but says nothing about retention, model training, account sharing or the accuracy of generated results.
Interrogate performance language
Words such as “smart,” “adaptive,” “understands” or “secure” are not test results. Ask what task was evaluated, under what conditions, with what error modes and whether a human can review or override an output. For health, safety, access-control or financial decisions, require a clear fallback when the AI is unavailable or wrong.

|---|---|---|
| Data | Inputs, inferred data, processing location, retention, deletion and recipients | Determines exposure if an account, service or device is compromised |
| Dependency | Account, internet, app, subscription and offline behavior | Shows recurring obligations and what fails during an outage |
| Access control | Unique credentials, MFA, user roles, encryption, pairing and lockout | Limits unauthorized control or viewing |
| Support | Warranty, update method, stated support period and end-of-support behavior | Indicates how long security fixes and core functions are likely to remain viable |
| Controls | Permission prompts, privacy switches, history deletion and access revocation | Shows whether you can reduce collection after purchase |
| Use fit | Accuracy needs, environment, accessibility, safety impact and data sensitivity | Prevents a convenient feature from creating disproportionate risk |
Weight these rows according to the product. For an indoor camera, household privacy and account access may dominate. For a wearable, health-data handling and phone permissions may matter most. For an appliance, update longevity and continued local operation may outweigh advanced AI features.
Category-specific questions to add
Wearables and health-oriented devices
- Which measurements are stored, inferred or shared with an account?
- Can you export and permanently delete health history?
- Is the AI output informational, or does the maker present it as a medical decision?
- What happens to alerts and records when the phone, network or subscription is unavailable?
Cameras, speakers and displays
- Can recording, wake-word detection and remote viewing be disabled independently?
- Are visitors notified, and can household users receive different permissions?
- Where are clips, transcripts and thumbnails stored, and how long do backups remain?
- Can you revoke every old phone, browser session and shared invitation?
Connected appliances and home systems
- Does a network outage affect basic physical controls or safety functions?
- Can a former resident or installer retain access?
- Are energy, occupancy or usage patterns shared with third parties?
- What is the replacement path when the cloud service or app is retired?
AI-capable computers
- Which tasks run locally and which send files, prompts or telemetry to a service?
- Can workplace, family or guest accounts be isolated?
- What happens to locally stored indexes, voice data and diagnostics after uninstalling the feature?
- Does the manufacturer document security updates for the operating system, firmware and AI components separately?
A practical pre-purchase procedure
- Define the consequence of failure. Write down what could happen if the device leaks data, produces a wrong result, loses connectivity or becomes unsupported.
- Collect the current documents. Open the model-specific privacy notice, security page, warranty, update policy, setup guide and app permission list. Save the publication or revision date.
- Fill in the comparison table. Record exact answers for data, dependency, access, support, controls and use fit. Mark unanswered items “not stated.”
- Test the account path before installing permanently. Confirm MFA, user roles, session revocation, deletion controls and whether setup requires permissions you will not grant.
- Check the failure path. Confirm what works without internet, phone, subscription or cloud service, and how you reset the device if ownership changes.
- Decide using the sensitive-data rule. The more intimate the data and the greater the consequence of misuse, the stronger the documentation and controls you should require.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The maker cannot identify what the AI feature collects or gives only a generic company-wide policy.
- Cloud processing is mandatory but retention, sharing or deletion terms are missing.
- The product relies on a shared default credential or offers no MFA for a remotely controllable account.
- There is no clear update channel, support horizon or explanation of end-of-service behavior.
- The companion app requests broad permissions with no functional explanation or granular controls.
- Marketing promises “secure” or “private” operation without describing authentication, encryption or access management.
- A safety-critical or health-related output has no stated limitations, human review or fallback.
Set it up safely after you buy
The purchase decision is only the first control point. Before connecting the device to your normal network, reset it to remove any prior owner’s settings, create a unique account password, enable MFA, install available firmware and review every privacy setting. The FTC’s connected-home advice specifically recommends resetting devices, reviewing current privacy settings and permissions for interacting mobile apps, checking warranty and support policies, and keeping devices updated.
Use a separate guest or IoT network when that is practical, limit shared users to what they need, disable unused microphones, cameras or remote access, and record the model, firmware version and support page. Recheck permissions and account sessions after major app or firmware updates. If you sell or return the device, revoke access, remove it from the account and perform the documented factory reset.
The decision in one sentence
Buy an AI-powered device only when you can explain its data flow, secure its account and hardware, identify its update and end-of-support path, control its app permissions, and show that those protections match the consequences of using it.
