What to Check Before Buying an AI Company’s Stock

Before buying an AI company’s stock, verify that the business has durable customer demand, a credible path to profitable cash flow, enough funding to support its infrastructure and research, and risks you can accept. Read the issuer’s latest Form 10-K and 10-Q first, then test its revenue, margins, spending, balance sheet, competition, regulation and valuation against the evidence—not its AI marketing.

“AI company” can mean a software specialist, a diversified technology company selling AI products, or an ordinary business using AI internally. Those models have different economics, so identify which one you are evaluating before comparing numbers.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

1. Identify what kind of AI company you are buying

The label “AI stock” is too broad to be useful on its own. Classify the issuer by how AI contributes to the business:

Business type What creates revenue Questions that matter most
Pure-play AI software or services Licences, subscriptions, usage fees, implementation and support Are customers renewing and expanding? Do gross margins improve with scale? How much does each deployment cost to support?
Diversified technology company AI-enabled cloud, software, hardware, advertising or other established products Can the company earn an attractive return on its AI infrastructure investment? Is AI adding sales or defending an existing franchise?
AI-enabled operating company Products outside AI, with AI used to reduce costs or improve service Are savings measurable? Does AI change demand, pricing or regulatory exposure? Is the stock valuation based on benefits that have not appeared in results?

Use the company’s own segment definitions and accounting policies. A headline about model performance does not tell you whether the issuer sells models, rents computing capacity, packages third-party models, or simply uses automation in its operations.

2. Read the latest filings in context

Start with the latest annual report and the most recent quarterly report available for the issuer. Use the filing, exhibits and financial-statement notes as your primary evidence. A risk-factor summary is not a substitute for the detailed disclosures. In its FY2025 Form 10-K, Veritone says the summary does not contain all information that may be important and directs readers to the complete risk factors and the rest of the annual report (Veritone FY2025 Form 10-K).

  1. Business section: Identify products, customers, geographies, sales channels, suppliers, competitors and the portion of revenue management attributes to AI.
  2. Management’s discussion and analysis: Read explanations for changes in revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, cash and liquidity. Compare management’s explanation with the actual statements.
  3. Financial statements and notes: Check revenue recognition, contract assets, deferred revenue, stock compensation, leases, debt, commitments, goodwill, acquisitions and segment reporting.
  4. Risk factors: Read the full section, not only the first-page summary. Mark risks that could affect demand, pricing, data rights, security, regulation, capital needs or the company’s ability to operate.
  5. Controls and legal proceedings: Look for material weaknesses, restatements, investigations, intellectual-property disputes and unresolved contingencies.

Date every number you write down. Fiscal years differ between issuers, and a “quarter” may not cover the same calendar months. When comparing companies, align periods and use the same definitions for revenue, operating income, free cash flow and customer metrics.

3. Test whether AI revenue is real and durable

Revenue growth is useful only when you understand what is being sold, to whom and under what contract terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate recurring demand from one-time work

  • Break revenue into subscriptions, consumption or transaction fees, licences, hardware, implementation, consulting and support.
  • Check deferred revenue, remaining performance obligations and contract duration. A large contract signed once is not equivalent to a broad base of renewing customers.
  • Ask whether consumption is measured by actual customer use or by minimum commitments that may not renew.
  • Look for customer concentration. Losing one large account can overwhelm strong percentage growth elsewhere.

Check the quality of growth

Calculate year-over-year and sequential growth using reported figures, then reconcile those changes with acquisitions, foreign-exchange effects, price increases, usage volume and changes in customer count. If management reports annual recurring revenue, bookings, billings or remaining performance obligations, read the definition and compare it with recognized revenue. A non-GAAP growth measure can be informative, but it should not replace the audited income statement.

Look for evidence customers receive value

Useful evidence includes renewal rates, net revenue retention, expansion within existing accounts, deployment times, paid production use and references to measurable customer outcomes. Treat pilot programs, free trials, announced partnerships and unaudited pipeline figures as earlier-stage evidence than collected revenue. Ask what would cause a customer to stop using the product and how difficult it would be to migrate to another provider.

4. Determine whether the company can make money

AI capability does not establish profitable demand. Build a simple bridge from revenue to cash generation:

Revenue − cost of revenue = gross profit
Gross profit − research and development − sales and marketing − general and administrative = operating income
Operating cash flow − capital expenditure = free cash flow

Then investigate each line rather than relying on a single margin percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gross margin and delivery cost

For software, ask whether inference, hosting, data licensing, implementation and support costs are included in cost of revenue. For a company selling hardware or bundled services, margins may be structurally lower and more cyclical. Compare gross margin over several periods and read management’s explanation for changes. A rising revenue line with falling gross margin may indicate that growth requires expensive compute or services.

Operating expenses and the profitability path

Separate recurring operating costs from restructuring, acquisition and other unusual items. Review research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative expense as percentages of revenue. Management should explain what must change for sustainable profitability: pricing, utilization, customer mix, headcount growth, infrastructure efficiency or a reduction in acquisition spending.

C3.ai’s FY2026 Form 10-K reports net losses of approximately $470.4 million in FY2026, $288.7 million in FY2025 and $279.7 million in FY2024. Those are issuer-specific historical figures, not an AI-sector benchmark. The same filing warns that the company has a history of losses, expects operating expenses to continue increasing and may not achieve or maintain profitability (C3.ai FY2026 Form 10-K).

Use cash flow, not adjusted earnings alone

Reconcile adjusted operating results with GAAP results and operating cash flow. Examine stock-based compensation, capitalized software, customer acquisition costs and changes in working capital. A company can report positive adjusted EBITDA while issuing substantial equity or consuming cash to build infrastructure. Track free-cash-flow margins over time and note whether improvement comes from durable operations or a temporary working-capital benefit.

5. Measure the cost and expected return on AI infrastructure

AI businesses may need data centers, accelerators, networking, storage, energy, data licences and specialist staff before revenue arrives. The relevant exposure varies: a cloud-scale diversified provider may own or lease large infrastructure fleets, while a software specialist may pay usage-based charges to third parties.

Find the spending in the filings

  • Review capital expenditure, construction commitments, purchase obligations and lease liabilities.
  • Read depreciation and amortization schedules to see when current investment will affect earnings.
  • Check cost-of-revenue commentary for cloud hosting, inference, data acquisition and implementation costs.
  • Look for supplier concentration, capacity reservations and minimum-use commitments.
  • Compare infrastructure growth with revenue growth and utilization disclosures.

Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K describes substantial AI and cloud investment and risks involving demand, costs, pricing, customer adoption and the returns on that investment (Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K). That disclosure illustrates the questions to ask; it does not establish that every AI issuer has the same capital intensity.

Ask whether returns can exceed the cost of capital

Estimate the revenue and gross profit required to cover new infrastructure and employees. Stress-test lower utilization, falling prices, slower customer adoption and a delay in reaching production. A model that works only if demand grows at the most optimistic rate is not a robust investment case.

6. Inspect cash, debt and dilution

Review liquidity before debating the growth story. Record cash and short-term investments, restricted cash, revolver availability, maturities, interest rates, covenants and lease obligations. Then estimate how many quarters of current cash burn the company can fund without new capital—but treat that as a scenario, not a promise.

Financing questions

  • Does management expect to raise equity, borrow, sell assets or rely on customer prepayments?
  • Would new debt create interest or covenant pressure if revenue growth slows?
  • Are convertible notes, warrants or preferred securities capable of becoming common shares?
  • Do purchase commitments require cash even if planned projects are delayed?

Ownership and dilution

Read the share-count footnote and equity-compensation tables. Track basic and diluted shares, options, restricted stock units, performance awards and shares reserved for future issuance. Compare stock-based compensation with revenue and operating cash flow. A growing share count reduces each existing holder’s claim on future earnings, even if the business itself expands.

Veritone lists indebtedness and liquidity among its risk categories, while C3.ai discusses continuing losses and anticipated expense increases in its filing (Veritone FY2025 Form 10-K; C3.ai FY2026 Form 10-K). Use each issuer’s own statements; one company’s runway cannot be transferred to another.

7. Test competitive durability

Ask why the customer cannot obtain a similar result from a cloud provider, an open-source model, an internal team or a lower-priced specialist.

Sources of an advantage

  • Proprietary data that the company has the legal right to use and that materially improves results.
  • Workflow integration, switching costs and compliance features embedded in customer operations.
  • Distribution, sales relationships or ecosystem access that competitors cannot easily replicate.
  • Lower unit costs from scale, efficient models or specialized infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated reliability, security and support in a regulated or mission-critical setting.

Do not treat a patent portfolio, a benchmark score or a partnership announcement as proof of a durable moat. Check whether the advantage appears in retention, pricing, gross margin or customer expansion.

Microsoft describes AI as highly competitive and rapidly evolving. Veritone says the market for AI-based software applications is relatively new and unproven and may decline or experience limited growth (Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K; Veritone FY2025 Form 10-K). These are company risk disclosures, not predictions that all AI companies will fail or succeed.

8. Read the risks beyond product performance

AI-specific risks often appear outside the product description. Build a risk map covering the company’s technology, customers, geography and role as developer, deployer or user.

Risk area What to look for in filings Possible financial effect
Intellectual property and data rights Training-data licences, ownership disputes, indemnities, infringement claims and restrictions on customer data Legal costs, damages, product changes or loss of usable data
Privacy and cybersecurity Personal-data processing, security incidents, access controls, breach history and contractual liability Remediation, fines, lawsuits, lost customers and higher insurance or compliance costs
Regulation and misuse AI-specific rules, sector requirements, export controls, content obligations and prohibited uses Delayed launches, restricted markets, redesign costs or penalties
Customer concentration Revenue share from major customers, renewal timing and dependence on one channel or partner Sharp revenue decline if one account or intermediary leaves
Execution and leadership Hiring constraints, delivery backlogs, turnover, internal controls and governance structure Missed targets, higher costs, restatements or strategic reversals
Supply and infrastructure Dependence on chip, cloud, energy or data suppliers; capacity commitments Higher unit costs, outages or inability to fulfill demand

Microsoft discusses AI misuse, regulation and public scrutiny; Veritone identifies intellectual-property and regulatory-compliance risks (Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K; Veritone FY2025 Form 10-K). The material exposure for a particular issuer depends on its products, contracts and markets.

9. Evaluate management’s evidence and promises

Compare what executives forecast in prior filings with what subsequently happened. Note changes in definitions, delayed profitability targets, repeated “adjusted” measures or guidance that excludes costs the business must actually pay. A credible team explains misses, updates assumptions and ties operational milestones to financial outcomes.

Review related-party transactions, insider ownership, voting rights, board independence, auditor reports and shareholder proposals. Strong technical credentials do not remove the need for sound capital allocation and governance. Check whether incentives reward revenue at any cost or sustainable returns.

10. Value the stock only after the business passes these checks

Valuation is the final step, not the starting point. Use a method that matches the company’s maturity:

  • Profitable, established issuer: compare enterprise value with revenue, operating income, free cash flow and growth, using genuinely comparable businesses.
  • High-growth but loss-making issuer: model several revenue, gross-margin and dilution scenarios; do not apply a mature-company earnings multiple to profits that do not yet exist.
  • Early-stage or heavily investing issuer: focus on cash runway, required funding, unit economics and the probability-weighted path to positive cash flow.

Compare valuation with actual growth, margins, capital needs and risk. A high growth rate alone does not establish fair value, and promising technology does not establish that a stock suits your objectives, time horizon or tolerance for loss. No issuer or current market price is specified here, so a current valuation conclusion would not be supportable.

11. Use a consistent comparison framework

When comparing two or more issuers, use the same fiscal periods and definitions. Record the evidence in a worksheet rather than relying on headlines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Measure to record Interpretation
Revenue Growth, mix, recurring share, concentration, retention and contract length Shows whether demand is broad, repeatable and economically valuable
Profitability Gross margin, operating margin, net loss, operating cash flow and free cash flow Shows whether scale is improving economics or increasing losses
Capital needs Research expense, infrastructure spending, commitments and cash burn Shows how much funding is needed before returns arrive
Balance sheet Cash, debt, maturities, covenants, share count and stock compensation Shows solvency risk and each holder’s potential dilution
Competition Alternatives, switching costs, pricing pressure and open-source substitutes Shows whether margins and retention can persist
Risk exposure Data rights, privacy, cybersecurity, regulation, IP and governance Shows where an adverse event could impair revenue or costs
Valuation Enterprise value relative to defensible growth, margins and cash needs Shows what expectations are already embedded in the price

12. A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Name the issuer and date the data. Record ticker, exchange, fiscal year-end and the filing dates you used.
  2. Classify the business model. Identify whether AI is the product, an infrastructure layer, a feature or an internal efficiency tool.
  3. Read the complete latest 10-K and 10-Q sections. Include business, MD&A, statements, notes, legal proceedings, controls and risk factors.
  4. Trace revenue to customers. Separate recurring, usage-based, services and one-time revenue; check concentration and retention evidence.
  5. Build the profitability bridge. Calculate gross profit, operating expenses, net income and free cash flow, then investigate unusual items.
  6. Quantify AI investment. Record research, compute, data-center, energy, supplier and deployment costs and compare them with revenue growth.
  7. Stress-test liquidity. Model slower growth, lower margins, higher infrastructure prices and a delayed funding round.
  8. Count dilution. Include options, restricted awards, convertibles, warrants and recurring stock-based compensation.
  9. Challenge the moat. List the customer’s realistic alternatives and the evidence that switching would be costly or disruptive.
  10. Map nontechnical risks. Review data rights, privacy, cybersecurity, IP, regulation, concentration, leadership and governance.
  11. Compare like with like. Align periods and definitions across competitors; mark any metric that is not disclosed rather than estimating it.
  12. Check personal fit. Decide how much volatility, loss and waiting for profitability you can accept before considering a purchase.

Red flags that deserve a pause

  • Revenue growth is driven mainly by pilots, acquisitions or a single customer rather than repeat usage.
  • Gross margin falls as consumption rises, with no credible explanation for eventual improvement.
  • Management emphasizes adjusted metrics while operating cash flow and free cash flow deteriorate.
  • Infrastructure commitments and hiring plans rise faster than contracted demand.
  • Cash burn requires frequent equity issuance, and the fully diluted share count is unclear.
  • Customer, data-licensing, privacy or regulatory risks are described vaguely or moved into remote-sounding language.
  • The competitive advantage depends on model performance that outside customers cannot verify in production.
  • The valuation assumes rapid growth and eventual margins that the filings do not yet demonstrate.

The decision standard is simple: the company should be able to explain where revenue comes from, why customers stay, how spending converts into returns, how it will fund the plan and which risks could break it. If a key answer is missing from the filing, treat that uncertainty as part of the investment case rather than filling it with optimism.
