What to Check Before Buying an 8-Bay NAS

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

An eight-bay NAS is worthwhile when you need a large, redundant storage pool, several simultaneous users, or room to add capacity without replacing the enclosure. It is not automatically the best value: eight empty bays still require eight compatible drives, a network capable of feeding them, and a power, backup, and support plan. If your needs are limited to a few computers and modest backups, a smaller NAS can be simpler and less expensive.

Use the checklist below before choosing an enclosure. It starts with usable capacity and data protection, then covers drive compatibility, networking, workload hardware, expansion, software, warranty, and the complete system cost.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

1. Decide whether eight bays solve your actual problem

Eight bays give you flexibility rather than a guaranteed performance advantage. You can spread capacity across more disks, choose a redundancy level that tolerates failures, and leave bays available for later expansion. Those benefits matter for media libraries, surveillance archives, team file shares, virtualization stores, and backup targets that are expected to grow for years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is complexity. An eight-bay enclosure costs more before you buy a single disk, uses more power, and creates more decisions about RAID, drive qualification, networking, cooling, and replacement parts. Define the workload first:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Home storage and backup: Estimate the data you have now, the annual growth you expect, and how many independent computers will use the NAS.
  • Creative or engineering files: Check the size of active projects and whether several people will read and write large files at once.
  • Surveillance: Count cameras, recording resolution, retention days, and whether the NAS software supports the required camera licenses and streams.
  • Virtual machines or containers: Give extra weight to CPU architecture, memory capacity, SSD options, and application support rather than bay count alone.
  • Secondary backup: An eight-bay unit may be useful as a destination, but a second location or offline copy is still needed for disasters.

Write down a five-year capacity target and the number of concurrent users before comparing models. If that exercise fits comfortably in four or six bays, paying for eight may only add unused hardware.

2. Calculate usable capacity, not the number printed on the box

Manufacturers advertise the sum of the installed drive capacities. Your usable space is lower after redundancy, filesystem overhead, reserved system space, and any free capacity you keep for growth. Synology’s capacity calculator is designed for entering a specific model, drive set, and RAID configuration; use it as a planning tool rather than treating a headline figure as universal.

Worked planning example

Suppose you install eight 12 TB drives. The raw decimal total is 96 TB. With RAID 6, two drive-equivalents are used for parity, leaving an approximate 72 TB before filesystem overhead and system reservations. The result is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a promise of the space shown by a particular operating system. Drive manufacturers label capacity in decimal terabytes, while some software displays tebibytes, so the number can appear smaller after formatting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Planning item Example What to verify
Drive count 8 All bays accept the selected form factor and interface
Drive size 12 TB each Exact model appears on the NAS compatibility list
Raw total 96 TB decimal Whether the vendor calculator uses decimal units
Redundancy RAID 6 Parity overhead and the vendor’s supported implementation
Approximate pre-overhead capacity 72 TB Filesystem, reserved space, and displayed TiB value

Do not fill every bay on day one simply because you can. Leaving an empty bay can make a later expansion easier, but expansion behavior differs by operating system and RAID type. Confirm whether the enclosure can add a disk to an existing pool, whether the pool must be rebuilt, and whether an expansion shelf is supported. Keep a practical free-space buffer so snapshots, indexing, and large file transfers do not run against a full volume.

Use the calculator with the final drive list

  1. Choose the exact NAS model and software version.
  2. Enter the manufacturer and capacity of every proposed drive, not just a generic size.
  3. Select the intended RAID or storage-pool type.
  4. Record both the calculator’s usable figure and the raw total.
  5. Subtract the space you intend to reserve for growth, snapshots, and temporary work.
  6. Repeat the calculation for a future expansion scenario so you know whether adding drives will require migration or a new pool.

3. Choose redundancy with recovery in mind

RAID is a way to organize disks for capacity, availability, or both. It is not a backup. Accidental deletion, ransomware, theft, fire, water damage, filesystem corruption, and a failed NAS controller can affect every disk in the array. Plan at least one separate backup copy, and for important data keep a copy in another physical location or offline.

RAID 6: two-drive tolerance at a capacity cost

Synology describes RAID 6 as storing two parity data blocks and tolerating the failure of two drives. In an eight-drive example, the equivalent of two drives is devoted to parity, which is why usable capacity is lower than RAID levels with less redundancy. RAID 6 is attractive when a large array must remain online during a second failure or while a replacement disk is being rebuilt.

Other layouts require different compromises

  • Single-parity layouts: They generally retain more usable space than RAID 6 but tolerate fewer simultaneous failures. Confirm the exact implementation and expansion rules in the NAS documentation.
  • Mirrored layouts: They keep copies of data on paired drives and can offer straightforward recovery, but usable capacity is substantially lower than the raw total.
  • Vendor-managed pools: Some systems provide proprietary or flexible pool modes. Read how they handle mixed drive sizes, replacement, expansion, and migration before committing.

Choose based on the value of the data, the time you can tolerate an outage, the number and size of the drives, and the quality of your backup. A redundant array can keep services running; only a separate copy protects against many causes of data loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check drive compatibility before ordering disks

Do not assume that a SATA drive that fits physically is officially supported. Open the compatibility page for the exact NAS model and check the current list, interface, capacity, firmware requirements, and any restrictions on using third-party drives. Synology’s policy is tied to specified DSM versions and listed drives; QNAP maintains its own compatibility list. Those policies cannot be generalized to every model or software release.

What to record from the list

  • Exact drive model number and capacity, including any suffix that identifies a regional or firmware variant.
  • Supported NAS model and the DSM, QTS, or other operating-system version covered by the listing.
  • Whether the drive is approved for storage pools, cache, surveillance, or a particular expansion unit.
  • Any warnings about mixing capacities, sector formats, interface speeds, or firmware revisions.
  • The vendor’s process for reporting a drive health alert or replacing a failed disk under warranty.

Buy the enclosure first only if you can verify the compatibility list at that time. Drive listings change as firmware and models change, and a list for one eight-bay product does not automatically apply to another from the same company.

5. Match the network to the whole path

A faster port on the NAS does not make every transfer faster. The NAS interface, switch, client adapter, cabling, link negotiation, protocol, and storage workload all have to support the target speed. A single gigabit client connected through a gigabit switch will not reach 10GbE rates just because the NAS has a 10GbE port.

Model example Built-in network interfaces listed by the manufacturer Expansion or upgrade detail
Synology DS1825+ Two 2.5GbE ports Optional faster networking; confirm the required module and compatibility
QNAP TS-873A Two 2.5GbE ports PCIe expansion for networking or other functions
UGREEN NASync DXP8800 Plus Two 10GbE ports Two M.2 slots; verify switch and client requirements for 10GbE
TerraMaster U8-450 Two 10Gb SFP+ ports and two 2.5GbE ports Use SFP+ optics or direct-attach cabling compatible with the switch

Audit your network before paying for 10GbE

  1. List every client that needs high throughput and identify its Ethernet or Wi-Fi capability.
  2. Check whether the switch has enough 2.5GbE, 10GbE copper, or 10Gb SFP+ ports.
  3. Confirm cable category or SFP+ module and direct-attach compatibility for the planned distance.
  4. Check whether link aggregation is supported by the NAS, switch, and operating system. Aggregation can help multiple clients, but it does not turn one ordinary client into a faster single connection.
  5. Separate file-transfer speed from application latency. Small files, databases, encryption, and parity calculations can limit performance even on a fast link.

For ordinary office documents and backups, dual 2.5GbE may be sufficient. For multiple editors moving large media files, 10GbE or 10Gb SFP+ can be meaningful, but budget for the switch, adapters, cabling, and configuration rather than only the NAS port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Size CPU and memory for the workload

Bay count says little about how well a NAS will run applications. Check the processor family, memory capacity and upgradeability, hardware transcoding claims if relevant, and the number of applications you expect to run simultaneously. A file server with a few users has different needs from a unit hosting containers, virtual machines, indexing, surveillance, and encryption at the same time.

What the current examples specify

Model Processor or memory information listed Why it matters to your decision
QNAP TS-873A AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B An x86 platform suitable for evaluating the NAS application’s operating-system and virtualization support
UGREEN NASync DXP8800 Plus 8GB DDR5 memory Check whether memory can be expanded and how much your planned applications require
TerraMaster U8-450 Expandable memory Confirm the supported module type and maximum before buying upgrades
Synology DS1825+ Product page emphasizes file, backup, and expansion services Read the model’s current memory and application limits before assuming support for a workload

Vendor specifications establish what the product is designed to support; they are not independent benchmarks. Treat throughput, concurrent-user counts, and transcoding claims as configuration-dependent. Look for application-specific requirements, not just a processor name.

7. Evaluate M.2, PCIe, and expansion-shelf options

M.2 slots can be used for NVMe cache or, on some platforms, additional storage. Cache is not a substitute for adequate RAM or a backup, and its usefulness depends on the access pattern. Ask whether the slots accept NVMe drives, whether both can be used at once, and whether the operating system supports read, write, or mirrored cache modes.

PCIe slots provide a path to faster networking, storage adapters, or other approved cards. Verify slot generation, physical clearance, supported cards, and whether installing one option disables another. An expansion shelf can add bays later, but it also adds a cable, power supply, enclosure cost, and another device that needs compatible firmware and support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The DS1825+ lists M.2 NVMe cache slots and expansion options.
  • The TS-873A lists M.2 slots and PCIe expansion.
  • The DXP8800 Plus lists two M.2 slots.
  • The U8-450 lists dual M.2 NVMe slots and memory expansion.

Read the expansion documentation before assuming that a future shelf will enlarge the same pool. Some systems require a new volume, a particular connection standard, or a specific software edition.

8. Compare operating system, applications, and backup tools

The software determines how you create pools, schedule snapshots, synchronize computers, run containers, monitor drives, and recover files. Make a list of the functions you will actually use:

  • Computer and server backup, including bare-metal or image-based recovery if required.
  • Snapshots and versioning that can restore files after accidental changes or ransomware.
  • Cloud or remote replication, with encryption and bandwidth controls.
  • User, group, and permission management for shared folders.
  • Container or virtual-machine support if you need self-hosted services.
  • Surveillance recording limits, camera licensing, and retention management.
  • Drive health monitoring, alerts, and replacement guidance.

Check the current application catalog and software-version support for the exact model. A feature shown on a brand’s general platform page may be unavailable on a particular processor, memory configuration, or firmware release.

9. Include noise, power, and the physical installation

Eight spinning disks generate more vibration and heat than a small NAS. Check the enclosure’s dimensions, rack or desktop mounting method, fan layout, acoustic specifications if published, and access for replacing a drive. Place it where sustained fan noise and warm exhaust will not be a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power planning includes the enclosure, eight drives, network upgrades, and any expansion shelf. A UPS can allow a controlled shutdown during an outage, but verify that the UPS model communicates with the NAS and that the NAS software supports safe-shutdown behavior. Size the UPS for the actual load and required runtime rather than relying on its headline wattage.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

10. Compare warranty and regional support

Warranty length is only one part of support. Confirm whether coverage is limited or standard, whether it is replacement or repair, which country handles service, and whether shipping is paid by you. Keep the product serial number, purchase receipt, and drive records together.

Model Warranty stated on the cited manufacturer page Qualification
Synology DS1825+ Three-year limited hardware warranty Figure is from the US listing; coverage can differ by region
QNAP TS-873A Three-year standard warranty Confirm local terms and exclusions
TerraMaster U8-450 Two-year replacement warranty Confirm regional process and shipping terms

The listed warranty terms are model- and market-specific. A drive’s own warranty is separate from the NAS enclosure warranty, so check both before buying a complete set.

Cost category Questions to answer
NAS enclosure What is the local price, and what is included in the box?
Eight or fewer NAS drives What capacities meet the usable-space target, and are the exact models compatible?
Memory or NVMe upgrades Are upgrades required for your applications, and are they officially supported?
Network equipment Do you need a 2.5GbE or 10GbE switch, adapters, optics, or new cabling?
Expansion shelf Is future capacity expansion supported, and what shelf, cable, and power costs apply?
UPS and power Can the UPS signal the NAS to shut down safely, and what is the expected power draw?
Backup destination What will hold the independent copy, and where will it be located?
Warranty and service What are the regional terms, shipping costs, and replacement timelines?

Do not use a temporary discount or an enclosure-only price as the system’s long-term cost. Drives, networking, and a second backup copy can exceed the price difference between two NAS models.

12. Model-specific checkpoints for four current examples

Synology DS1825+

The US product listing specifies eight bays, two built-in 2.5GbE ports, M.2 NVMe cache slots, expansion options, backup and file services, and a three-year limited hardware warranty. Synology’s global pages can show capacity figures that vary by geography or configuration, so use the figure tied to your market and drive assumptions. Confirm the current compatible-drive list and optional faster-networking hardware before ordering.

QNAP TS-873A

QNAP lists eight 3.5-inch SATA bays, an AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B processor, two 2.5GbE ports, M.2 slots, PCIe expansion, and a three-year standard warranty. Check the QNAP compatibility list for the exact model and software version, then verify which PCIe cards and memory configurations are supported for your applications.

UGREEN NASync DXP8800 Plus

The official listing specifies eight SATA bays, two M.2 slots, two 10GbE ports, 8GB of DDR5 memory, and RAID modes including RAID 6. Its 10GbE design makes the switch, client adapters, and cabling part of the purchase decision. Confirm current firmware, supported drives, memory expansion details, and local warranty terms.

TerraMaster U8-450

The manufacturer specifies dual 10Gb SFP+ and dual 2.5GbE interfaces, dual M.2 NVMe slots, expandable memory, TRAID, and a two-year replacement warranty. SFP+ requires compatible optics or direct-attach cables and a suitable switch. Verify how TRAID handles expansion and recovery for your selected drive set, and confirm the regional replacement process.

These examples illustrate different priorities rather than a ranking. Manufacturer specifications do not independently establish comparative speed, reliability, ease of use, or value. Confirm current stock, pricing, firmware, drive support, and warranty in your country immediately before purchase.

13. A final pre-purchase checklist

  1. Write down current data, projected growth, users, applications, and retention requirements.
  2. Run the exact drive list and redundancy choice through the manufacturer’s capacity calculator.
  3. Choose a redundancy level that matches failure tolerance and recovery time, then design a separate backup.
  4. Open the compatibility list for the exact NAS model and software version before buying drives.
  5. Map NAS ports to client adapters, switch ports, cabling, and expected workloads.
  6. Confirm CPU, memory, application, virtualization, and surveillance requirements.
  7. Check M.2, PCIe, memory, and expansion-shelf limits, including which options can operate together.
  8. Read backup, snapshot, alerting, and remote-replication documentation.
