For Ray-Ban Meta, the documented requirements include a supported smartphone, the Meta AI app, wireless internet, and a Meta account; the privacy behavior and battery figures are model- and software-specific.
Use the checks below in order. They are designed to catch the most expensive surprises—an app that cannot be installed, a frame that cannot take your prescription, a feature that requires cloud processing, or a battery claim that does not match your daily use—before you place an order.

1. Confirm the complete phone and account requirement
AI glasses are usually an accessory to a phone and companion service, not a self-contained computer. The glasses may capture media locally, but setup, importing, updates, account management, and many assistant functions can depend on the phone app and an internet connection.
Ray-Ban Meta’s documented minimums
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ, accessed October 13, 2026, says Ray-Ban Meta requires a compatible smartphone connected to the Meta AI app, wireless internet access, and a valid Meta account. The stated operating-system minimums are Android 10 or newer with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or newer. Those are minimum requirements for the product family, not a promise that every feature works on every phone or in every country.

- Phone: identify the exact handset model, not just whether it runs Android or iOS.
- Operating system: check that the phone is on a supported release and can receive future app updates.
- App: confirm that the Meta AI app can be installed from your country’s app store before buying.
- Account: make sure you can create or use the required Meta account and accept the current terms.
- Internet: plan for wireless internet for setup and any feature that sends data to online services.
- Region: verify that the functions you want—not merely the glasses themselves—are offered in your country.
Ray-Ban notes that its app can be available in countries where the product is not sold and that different terms may apply. Therefore, an app-store listing or an operating-system match is not proof that local sales, support, voice features, or AI functions are available where you live.
A pre-purchase compatibility check
- Write down the exact model and frame SKU. Different generations and frame variants can have different software, lens, accessory, or support requirements.
- Check the phone against the maker’s current supported-phone list. Do this even when the operating system exceeds the published minimum; app compatibility can be narrower than the OS requirement.
- Open your local app store and search for the companion app. Confirm that the app is published for your country, can be installed on your handset, and has been updated recently.
- Check feature availability by region. Ask whether camera questions, voice assistance, importing, translation, or other advertised functions are enabled for your account location.
- Confirm network requirements. Determine which actions require wireless internet and which can work when the phone is offline. Do not assume that a Bluetooth connection replaces internet access.
- Check accessories separately. If a feature uses a companion band or another accessory, verify its own phone, account, Wi-Fi, and regional requirements. Ray-Ban’s information for the Meta Ray-Ban Display family, for example, describes Wi-Fi as necessary for Meta AI, importing captures, and updates, while some controls may work without Wi-Fi. That is a model-specific example, not a universal rule.
- Ask about software support. Find out how security, app, and firmware updates are delivered and whether an older phone can continue to use the glasses after a future app update.
2. Check the frame, bridge, temples, and prescription before judging the electronics
AI glasses still have to work as eyewear. A camera or assistant is of little use if the frame slides, presses on your nose, conflicts with your prescription, or becomes tiring after an hour.
Identify the exact physical variant
Use the frame’s full model name, size, bridge measurement, and SKU when checking fit. A family name can cover several shapes and sizes. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes adjustable temple tips on identified variants and different nose-pad adjustment or replacement options for particular models. Those adjustments are not guaranteed across every Ray-Ban Meta frame.
Where possible, try on the exact frame for several minutes rather than relying on a product photograph. Check whether the pupils sit correctly behind the lenses, whether the bridge stays in place when you look down, and whether the temples press against your head. Move your jaw, smile, and turn your head; the frame should not shift enough to change the camera angle or create pressure points.

Verify prescription support with the exact seller
Ask the seller or an optician which lens types and prescription ranges are available for the specific frame and your country. Confirm how the prescription is entered, whether high prescriptions or prism are accepted, and whether replacement lenses are supported after purchase. Do not infer lens availability from another size or color of the same product family.
If the manufacturer says a temple tip or nose pad should be adjusted by an optician, follow that instruction. An optician can also check optical centering and whether the electronic components in the temples alter the fit of your existing frames. These are practical fitting checks, not a substitute for a manufacturer’s prescription approval.
Test comfort with the real use case
- Wear the glasses while reading and looking at a phone, because a frame that feels fine while standing may slip when you tilt your head.
- Check comfort with any prescription thickness and coatings already installed.
- Consider how the frame feels alongside headphones, helmets, hats, or hearing devices you regularly use.
- Make sure the controls can be reached without changing the frame’s position.
- Read the return policy before ordering prescription lenses; some custom lenses may have different return conditions.
3. Treat battery numbers as use-case estimates
Battery life depends on what the glasses are doing, how often they connect to the phone, wireless conditions, temperature, and software behavior. Compare the manufacturer’s test description with your own pattern instead of treating a single headline number as guaranteed runtime.

Ray-Ban’s 2026 FAQ says actual runtime varies with use and other factors. Before buying, estimate how many hours you will spend streaming audio, asking voice questions, capturing media, and importing files. Then check whether the charging method fits your commute and workday. If the maker does not publish a runtime for your exact workload, mark it as not stated rather than extrapolating from a different mode or generation.

4. Separate gallery capture from AI camera and voice processing
One of the most important privacy checks is to map each data path separately. A statement that ordinary gallery photos remain on the glasses does not establish where an image goes when you ask an AI assistant to interpret what the camera sees.

These descriptions come from Meta’s own product and engineering materials. They do not prove that every interaction is processed only on the device, nor do they establish identical behavior for other manufacturers. Read the privacy information for the exact model, app version, and country.
Ask who can access stored media
For gallery files, determine whether they remain only on the glasses until import, whether the phone automatically backs them up to another service, and whether another person with access to your phone account could see them. For AI interactions, ask whether prompts, images, transcripts, or results are retained in your account and whether they can be deleted independently of gallery media.
5. Understand what the capture light does—and what it does not do
Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says the white capture LED blinks when the glasses capture content for the gallery. It also says the camera is disabled if the LED is blocked or tampering is detected. Meta’s stated wording is: “The capture LED has no off switch.”

This is a vendor-described safeguard, not an independent test of every smart-glasses product or every possible AI function. The indicator described by Meta relates to gallery photo and video capture. It should not be treated as proof that all camera-based AI processing, audio collection, or network transmission is visibly signaled in the same way.
Before buying, check the exact model’s documentation for:
- what color and pattern indicate a gallery photo or video;
- whether the indicator can be dimmed, disabled, covered, or defeated;
- what happens if the camera or indicator is obstructed;
- whether an AI prompt activates the camera without saving a gallery file;
- how microphones and voice activation are indicated; and
- what the product recommends when other people are present.
Respect local recording laws, workplace rules, school policies, and other people’s expectations. A visible indicator can help people recognize gallery capture, but it is not a substitute for consent or for understanding the product’s data flows.

Do not assume that local gallery storage means local AI
Meta’s materials distinguish between gallery media stored on the glasses until import and AI requests that use the camera or voice. Meta Engineering describes Private Processing as cloud processing for personal context. Therefore, ask the manufacturer to identify which operations run on the glasses, which run on the phone, and which use remote servers.

Find the deletion controls before you need them
Look for controls covering voice recordings, transcripts, camera prompts, imported media, account history, and model-improvement settings. Meta says users can delete voice recordings with Meta AI and that deleted information will not be used for future training. Check the current wording in the app and privacy policy, because controls and retention periods can change with software versions and regions.
A useful privacy checklist is:
- Can you view a history of voice or AI interactions?
- Can you delete one interaction without deleting all account data?
- Does deleting a recording also remove its transcript or attached image?
- Is there a setting that limits use of interactions for service improvement or training?
- How long can backups or safety logs persist after deletion?
- Can you use basic eyewear, audio, or camera functions if you decline optional data sharing?
7. Compare different AI glasses on the same axes
When you compare models, use one worksheet rather than copying each company’s headline features into separate notes. Mark any unsupported or region-dependent value as not stated.

8. Follow a purchase workflow that exposes problems early
- Define the job. Decide whether you mainly want hands-free photos, audio, navigation, accessibility assistance, AI questions, or all of these. The answer determines which battery and privacy details matter most.
- Confirm the phone and region. Check the handset, OS, companion app, account, internet requirement, and local availability of the desired features.
- Confirm the frame and prescription. Try the exact size if possible, obtain the bridge and temple measurements, and have an optician verify the prescription range.
- Read the privacy documentation for the SKU. Separate gallery storage, AI camera prompts, voice recordings, cloud processing, retention, and deletion.
- Compare battery using your workload. Use continuous audio and voice-assistance figures when that is how you expect to wear the glasses, rather than relying on moderate-use figures.

The safest AI-glasses purchase is the one that passes three separate tests: your exact phone and region support the software, the exact frame works as prescription eyewear, and the privacy documentation explains each path from capture to processing to deletion. Ray-Ban Meta’s published Android 10-or-newer and iOS 14.4-or-newer requirements, model-specific fit guidance, Gen 2 battery estimates, capture-LED behavior, and cloud-processing descriptions are useful reference points, but they should not be generalized to every AI-glasses product. Recheck the current support and privacy materials immediately before ordering.
