What to Check Before Buying a “Windows 11 Phone”: Apps, Updates, Battery Life, and Support

There is no established current consumer-phone category that runs Windows 11. Microsoft’s current documentation describes Phone Link as software that connects a Windows 11 PC to select Android phones and iPhones. If you want a phone that works well with your Windows 11 computer, evaluate the exact handset’s Phone Link compatibility, app platform, update policy, battery condition, and return protection. A legacy Windows 10 Mobile handset is a different product: Microsoft ended its support on January 14, 2020.

First, define what “Windows 11 phone” means

The phrase can describe two very different buying goals:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • An actual phone running Microsoft’s mobile version of Windows. This points to legacy Windows 10 Mobile hardware. It is no longer a normally supported platform for a new purchase.
  • A phone that works with a Windows 11 PC. This is the practical current option. Microsoft’s Phone Link app connects a Windows computer to selected Android phones and iPhones, but the phone continues to run Android or iOS.

Phone Link does not install Windows 11 on the handset, replace Android or iOS, or guarantee that every feature works on every model. Compatibility is feature-specific, device-specific, and sometimes market-specific.

Windows 10 Mobile is not a current supported buying category

Microsoft lists January 14, 2020 as the end-of-support date for Windows 10 Mobile. A phone can still power on and run some of its existing software after that date, but the platform no longer receives Microsoft’s normal software or security support. Microsoft explains the consequence this way:

#1 Best Overall
HTC Sprint Touch Pro Windows Smart Phone (Renewed)
  • Touch screen
  • Bluetooth Wireless
  • 3.2 MP Camera
  • 3g Internet with E-mail
  • For use on Sprint network only in the USA. Clean ESN.

“Devices running an unsupported version of Windows will still function, but Microsoft doesn’t provide the following:”

That distinction matters for banking, messaging, account sign-in, browser compatibility, and any task that depends on current security fixes. A functioning old handset is not the same as a supported phone. If a listing calls an old handset a “Windows 11 phone,” treat that as a warning that the seller may be confusing the operating system with PC-to-phone connectivity.

What Phone Link actually requires

Before comparing phones, check the baseline requirements for the platform you intend to use. Microsoft’s setup documentation lists these requirements for Phone Link:

Phone platform PC requirement Phone requirement Connection requirement Important qualification
Android Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11 Android 10 or later Phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network Support is for select Android devices and manufacturers, not universal Android compatibility
iPhone Windows 11 iOS 14 or later Bluetooth, with the latest Phone Link app Device compatibility and regional restrictions may apply; the feature set differs from Android

Meeting the operating-system minimum is only the first filter. An Android phone running Android 10 or later can still lack a particular Phone Link capability. Similarly, an iPhone that meets the iOS requirement may not offer the same integration available on a compatible Android model.

Why the exact model matters more than the manufacturer’s name

Microsoft’s compatibility information separates capabilities such as Phone screen and Apps, and notes restrictions by device and market. Therefore, do not stop after checking that a manufacturer appears on a compatibility list. Record the full model name, model number, storage variant if it affects the listing, and the country or sales region. Check those details against Microsoft’s current compatibility page for the specific feature you want.

A brand-level statement such as “this manufacturer supports Phone Link” is not enough. A manufacturer may sell several generations and regional variants with different firmware, radios, or compatibility status. A used handset can also have a different model identifier from the one shown in a generic review.

Decide which phone features you actually need

Phone Link features are not a single all-or-nothing package. Make a short list before shopping:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do you need only a basic connection between the phone and PC?
  • Is the Phone screen capability essential?
  • Do you need the Apps capability specifically?
  • Would an iPhone be acceptable if its available feature set differs from Android?
  • Do you need the connection to work in a particular country or while traveling?

Then verify each required capability for the exact model and market. If a listing says merely “works with Phone Link” without identifying which feature is supported, consider that an incomplete specification rather than a guarantee.

Apps: the phone still uses Android or iOS

The most important app-related fact is architectural: Phone Link is a connection between a Windows PC and a phone. It does not turn the handset into a Windows 11 device. Android phones continue to use Android apps, and iPhones continue to use iOS apps.

That means you should evaluate app availability on the phone’s own platform first. Check that the services you use for communication, banking, authentication, navigation, work, health, and media have a current app for Android or iOS. Do not assume that an old Windows Mobile app catalog can be recreated through Phone Link.

Rank #3

When a Phone Link page lists an Apps capability, read the conditions attached to that capability. The feature may be limited to selected devices or markets, and the experience is not necessarily identical to installing the same app directly on the phone. Treat Phone Link as a convenience layer for a compatible computer-and-phone pair, not as a replacement for the phone’s native app ecosystem.

Questions to ask a seller about app use

  • What is the exact operating-system version currently installed?
  • Can the seller provide the full model number, not just the product family name?
  • Is the handset intended for the country where you will use it?
  • Does the advertised Phone Link capability refer to Phone screen, Apps, or another function?
  • Will the seller accept a return if the required feature is unavailable in your market?

Check the manufacturer’s update commitment for the exact model

Phone Link compatibility and long-term phone support are separate questions. Microsoft’s Phone Link documentation does not establish how many operating-system upgrades or security updates an individual Android model will receive. Verify that information with the phone manufacturer for the precise model and sales region.

Do not substitute a general statement about a company’s newest phones for a promise covering an older or cheaper model. Update policies can differ by model, carrier version, country, and release date. Ask for both parts of the policy:

  • Operating-system updates: how many major Android or iOS releases the model is expected to receive, if the manufacturer states a number.
  • Security updates: how long security patches are scheduled, how often they are delivered, and whether the policy applies to your region and sales channel.

For a used phone, compare the remaining support period with the device’s current software version. A handset that is technically compatible today may be a poor purchase if its security-support window is nearly over and the manufacturer offers no further commitment.

Battery life: inspect the actual handset, not an old specification sheet

No comparative battery-life figures for specific phones are established here, and a model’s original battery capacity cannot prove how long a used example will last today. Lithium-ion batteries age through time, charge cycles, heat, and storage conditions. Two phones of the same model can therefore have very different practical runtime.

For a used phone

  1. Open the phone’s built-in battery-health or diagnostic screen, if that model provides one, and record what it reports.
  2. Ask the seller whether the battery is original or replaced. Request documentation for a replacement where available.
  3. Inspect the condition details for swelling, a lifted screen, unusual heat, rapid percentage drops, or shutdowns under load.
  4. Ask how the return period handles battery defects. A return window is more useful than an unverified claim that the battery is “good.”
  5. After receiving the phone, test it during your normal activities before the return deadline expires.

Do not use a manufacturer’s launch-day capacity or a review of a new unit as evidence of the present battery condition of a used listing.

For a new phone

Look for the manufacturer’s stated battery warranty and replacement process, then check whether the exact regional model has the features and update support you need. A new battery does not compensate for an unsupported operating system or missing Phone Link capability.

Purchase condition and return terms are part of the specification

When buying a used or refurbished phone, condition and returns can determine whether your Windows 11 setup works in practice. Record the advertised model number, operating-system version, battery-health evidence, accessories, and any carrier or regional restrictions before paying.

  • Unlocked status: confirm that the handset is usable with your intended carrier and region.
  • Software state: ask whether it has been reset and whether it can receive the updates promised for that model.
  • Physical condition: inspect the screen, charging port, cameras, buttons, and signs of liquid or impact damage.
  • Return terms: check the number of days, who pays shipping, and whether battery wear or compatibility failure is covered.
  • Proof of identity: retain photos of the model number and advertised condition in case the delivered unit differs from the listing.

Android or iPhone: choose by integration, not by the “Windows” label

Decision point Compatible Android phone iPhone What to verify before purchase
PC operating system Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11 Windows 11 Confirm the PC edition and update state
Phone operating system Android 10 or later iOS 14 or later Check the installed version and the model’s ability to update
Pairing connection Same Wi-Fi network for the phone and PC Bluetooth, with the latest Phone Link app Make sure the intended setup location supports the required connection
Phone Link coverage Select devices; capabilities such as Phone screen and Apps vary Distinct feature set; device and regional restrictions may apply Check the exact model and required capability on Microsoft’s compatibility information
Native apps Android app ecosystem iOS app ecosystem Confirm every essential app on the phone platform itself
Updates and battery Must be verified with the manufacturer and on the actual unit Must be verified for the exact model and condition Do not infer support duration or present battery life from Phone Link compatibility

This is not a ranking. The better choice is the phone whose native apps, required Phone Link feature, regional availability, remaining support period, and battery condition all fit your situation.

A pre-purchase checklist you can follow

  1. Write down your goal. Decide whether you want a phone running Windows Mobile or a phone that connects to a Windows 11 PC. If it is the former, stop and account for the January 14, 2020 end of support.
  2. Identify your PC. Record whether it runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later.
  3. Choose the phone platform. Select Android or iPhone based on the apps you need, not on the phrase “Windows phone.”
  4. Check the minimum phone version. Android must be version 10 or later for the listed Android setup; iPhone use requires iOS 14 or later.
  5. Record the complete model identifier. Do not rely on a family name or a photograph that hides the model number.
  6. Check the desired Phone Link feature. Look specifically for Phone screen, Apps, or whichever capability you require, and note any device or market restriction.
  7. Confirm the connection environment. Android setup requires the phone and PC to be on the same Wi-Fi network. iPhone setup requires Bluetooth, Windows 11, and the latest Phone Link app.
  8. Verify native apps. Confirm that essential services are available and supported on Android or iOS directly.
  9. Verify update support. Obtain the manufacturer’s policy for the exact model and region, including operating-system and security coverage.
  10. Evaluate battery and condition. Inspect health information, seller disclosures, physical signs, and return terms for the actual unit.
  11. Keep evidence. Save the listing, model number, compatibility result, and return policy until the setup and battery tests are complete.

Common failure modes and what to do

The seller says the phone “runs Windows 11”

Ask for the phone’s operating-system screen and model number. If it is an Android or iPhone, the seller is describing a Phone Link relationship, not Windows 11 running on the handset. If it is a Windows 10 Mobile device, treat it as legacy hardware with support ended on January 14, 2020.

The phone meets the Android or iOS version requirement but a feature is missing

Recheck the exact model, not just the operating-system version. Phone Link capabilities are selective, and Microsoft’s compatibility information distinguishes features and markets. A minimum OS version does not guarantee Phone screen or Apps availability.

The PC and phone cannot pair

For Android, confirm that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the PC meets the Windows requirement. For iPhone, confirm Windows 11, iOS 14 or later, Bluetooth, and the latest Phone Link app. If those conditions are satisfied, compare the full model and region with Microsoft’s compatibility information before assuming the handset is defective.

The phone works initially but becomes a poor long-term purchase

Phone Link compatibility does not promise future updates or healthy battery life. Check the manufacturer’s support commitment and the actual battery condition separately. If either is unclear, use the return policy as protection rather than relying on a generic model description.

When each option makes sense

Choose a compatible Android phone when

  • Your required Phone Link capability is listed for the exact Android model and market.
  • The phone runs Android 10 or later and your PC meets the Windows requirement.
  • Your essential apps are available on Android.
  • The manufacturer provides acceptable update coverage for the model you are buying.
  • The actual battery and return terms are satisfactory.

Choose an iPhone when

  • You are using Windows 11 and can use Bluetooth for the connection.
  • The iPhone runs iOS 14 or later and the available Phone Link feature set is sufficient.
  • Your essential apps and services are better suited to iOS.
  • You have confirmed any device or regional restrictions before buying.

Avoid a legacy Windows Mobile purchase when

  • You need current security updates or dependable modern app support.
  • The seller cannot explain the device’s support status.
  • You are buying it because you believe it is a phone running Windows 11.

Bottom line for a Windows 11 PC owner

Shop for a supported Android phone or iPhone that pairs with Windows 11 through Phone Link, not for a handset advertised as running Windows 11. Confirm the exact Phone Link feature and market, check the phone’s native apps, obtain the manufacturer’s update commitment for that precise model, and inspect the actual battery and return terms. Treat Windows 10 Mobile as a discontinued platform whose Microsoft support ended on January 14, 2020.
