Before buying a VR headset, confirm it supports the games and platform you want, fits your head and glasses, works with hardware you already own, and can be used safely in your available space. Then total the headset, required console or PC, games, and any essential accessories. A high-resolution display or an attractive headset price cannot make up for an incompatible game library or missing equipment.
Start with the games and platform
List the games you want to play and where you expect to play them: a console, a gaming PC, or another supported platform. Check compatibility for the exact headset and titles before comparing display specifications. Headsets that look similar can have different libraries and setup requirements.

Sony’s PS VR2 product page identifies it as a headset for PS5 console play. Sony says it is not compatible with PS4 and cannot play original PS VR titles. Using it with a PC is a separate route: it requires a PS VR2 PC adapter and SteamVR games. Sony also documents differences between the PC and PS5 feature sets.

The Valve Index is a contrasting PC-oriented example: Valve’s kit information lists a PC, base stations, and compatible system components as part of the setup to consider. For any headset, verify the requirements for the configuration you plan to use, rather than assuming a console headset will work on PC—or vice versa.

Will the headset fit comfortably, including over glasses?
Comfort depends on the fit of the particular headset on your face and head; specifications and manufacturer descriptions cannot guarantee that it will feel comfortable for you, especially during a long session. Look for adjustments that let you position the headband, headset scope or facial interface, and lenses. If possible, try the headset before buying and check the retailer’s return policy.
Sony says PS VR2 was designed to accommodate glasses, while warning that very wide or unusually shaped frames may not fit. Check clearance with your own glasses rather than relying on a general assurance. Sony’s PS VR2 FAQ also describes headband, scope, and lens-spacing adjustments. Treat those as product-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every wearer’s fit.

Compare display specifications in context
Specifications can help distinguish products, but they do not settle whether a headset fits, supports your games, or suits your play style. Compare the same categories across the specific headsets you are considering:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Display: resolution per eye and display type.
- Refresh rate: supported rates, which may depend on the headset or setup.
- Lenses: whether lens spacing or position can be adjusted.
- Tracking and features: what the headset and controllers support on your intended platform.
- Connection and library: required ports, cables, adapters, and supported games.
As one product-specific reference, Sony lists PS VR2 with an OLED display, 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye, 90 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates, adjustable lens separation, and an approximately 110-degree field of view on its technical specifications page. These figures describe PS VR2; they are not universal benchmarks for comfort or game suitability.

Check the exact hardware and connection requirements
PS5 console use
For PS VR2 console play, Sony requires a PS5. If you do not already own one, include it in the setup budget rather than comparing headset prices alone.
PS VR2 PC use
Sony’s PC setup requirements list Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 or later), at least 8 GB of RAM, a compatible graphics card, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.0, and Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Sony specifies that a dedicated DisplayPort output is needed; DisplayPort over USB Type-C is not compatible with the adapter. These are minimum requirements, not a guarantee of ideal performance. Check Sony’s current requirements and adapter details against the exact PC you plan to use.

PC use also differs from PS5 use in features. Sony says PS VR2 on PC does not provide HDR output, headset eye tracking, headset feedback, Sense controller adaptive triggers, or full Sense controller haptics as on PS5; basic controller vibration remains. These are feature differences, not a claim that PC play is incompatible.
Make sure you have enough usable space
Room requirements vary by headset and game, so use the guidance for the product and play mode you intend to use. For PS VR2, Sony recommends at least 1 m x 1 m of clear space for seated or standing play, with room to move your arms freely, and 2 m x 2 m for roomscale play. Check the play-space guidance for other headsets rather than applying these figures to all VR systems.

Calculate the total cost of the setup
Make a list based on what you already own and what you actually need. A headset’s listed price is only one part of the cost.
- Core hardware: headset and any required console or PC you do not already have.
- Required connection equipment: adapters or other components needed for your chosen platform.
- Games: the titles you intend to play, including any platform-specific purchases.
- Accessories you need: for example, a charging station, audio equipment, prescription lenses, replacement parts, or comfort accessories.
Sony lists the PS VR2 headset, Sense controllers, USB cable, stereo headphones, three pairs of earpieces, and printed materials among the box contents. The PC adapter and controller charging station are described separately, so check whether either is necessary for your setup before budgeting for it. Prices and stock vary by retailer and location; use current local listings when comparing totals, and note the date and geography of any price figures you publish.
A practical comparison checklist
Before choosing between two or more headsets, compare them against your own equipment and intended games:
Quick Recap
- Write down the games and platform you want to use; verify that each headset supports them.
- Check fit adjustments and, if relevant, clearance for your own glasses.
- Compare display, refresh-rate, lens, and tracking specifications without treating them as a comfort guarantee.
- Confirm required console or PC hardware, operating system, ports, cables, and adapters.
- Check the manufacturer’s space guidance for your intended play style.
- Add the headset, missing core hardware, games, required adapters, and accessories you actually need to estimate the full setup cost.
