Before buying a VR game, match the exact game edition to your headset and platform, confirm whether another version is included or costs extra, and check that your room can support the game’s play style. “VR” by itself does not guarantee compatibility: a PS VR release, a PS VR2 edition, a PC version, and a standalone headset build may be separate products.
Use this quick rule: identify your headset, how you will run it, and the exact store listing for the edition you intend to buy. Then verify its play-area and setup requirements.

1. Match the game listing to your headset and platform
Check the store page for the specific edition you plan to play—not just the game’s title or a general “VR” label. Confirm that the listing supports your headset and the platform that will run the game, such as a console, standalone headset, or PC.

PlayStation’s guidance is a clear example of why this matters: PS VR2 works with PS5, not PS4, and PS VR and PS VR2 games are not compatible across generations. Sony advises, “Always check the compatibility of a game when purchasing on PlayStation Store.” Check PS VR2 game and console compatibility.

Do not assume that a game with the same name has one interchangeable version across platforms. Verify the edition shown on the store page and make sure it matches the account, platform, and headset you intend to use. Store availability and offers may also vary by region and edition, so check your own listing.
2. Check cross-buy or upgrade terms for that game
If you already own a game on another platform or generation, look for an explicit cross-buy or upgrade offer on the exact title’s listing. Sony says, “Some games may be available for cross buy or upgrades on a title-by-title basis.” It also says, “The offering and any associated costs are based on the developer’s preference.” PlayStation VR2: The ultimate FAQ.

- Does the offer name the version you already own and the version you want?
- Is the second version included, or is there an upgrade fee?
- Are there edition, account-region, or other purchase conditions on the listing?
An existing purchase alone does not establish that you are entitled to another version. Treat cross-buy and upgrades as title-specific unless the current listing states otherwise.

Look for whether the game supports sitting, standing, or roomscale play, then compare that requirement with the usable, unobstructed space available where you will play. A room can be large enough overall but still lack a safe clear area once furniture and obstacles are considered.

Sony’s measurements come from its PS VR2 play-area guidance for PS5. Meta’s roomscale figures are a recommendation in its Boundary developer documentation. Follow the instructions for your specific headset and the game’s supported play style; do not apply one platform’s space figures to every VR system.

Using a headset with a PC changes which library you can access and what equipment is required. Sony says PS VR2 on PC plays VR games available on Steam, while PS VR2 on PS5 plays PS VR2 games. For PS VR2 on Steam, the PlayStation VR2 App on Steam lists a PS VR2 headset and Sense controllers, a PC adapter, and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable among its requirements. Bluetooth hardware is conditionally required, so check the current Steam listing for the applicable condition before setup.
If you are considering wireless PC streaming rather than a direct headset connection, check the streaming software’s requirements separately. For example, Valve’s Steam Link requirements for Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets specify Windows 10 or newer, a supported GPU, and 5 GHz/Wi-Fi 5 minimum for that streaming setup. Those are Steam Link requirements, not universal requirements for VR games or all PC headsets.

5. Run this check at checkout
- Identify the exact setup: note your headset, the platform that will run the game, and whether you will use standalone, console, direct PC, or streaming play.
- Open the exact edition’s listing: confirm that it names or supports your headset and platform. Do not infer compatibility from a similar edition or the game title alone.
- Read the ownership terms: if you own another version, find an explicit cross-buy or upgrade offer and check any fee and conditions.
- Check the play style: find the game’s sitting, standing, or roomscale support and compare it with your clear, usable area.
- Confirm setup requirements: for PC use, check the required app, PC capability, adapter, cable, controllers, and any conditional Bluetooth or network requirements.
- Verify the purchase details: make sure the region and edition shown on your store account are the ones you intend to buy, and recheck current listing details before paying.
