Before buying a used Xbox Series X or Series S, verify the exact model and storage, test the console and included controller, and make sure the seller removes their account and resets it. Check the disc drive only if that specific Series X has one; Series S is digital-only.
Choose the right console for how you play
Start by deciding whether you need physical games or UHD Blu-ray playback. A Series S is digital-only, while Series X configurations may differ: Microsoft’s product guide says a console may or may not include an optical drive. Do not rely on the model name or listing title alone. Inspect the actual unit and confirm the drive is present and working if you need discs. Microsoft’s certified-refurbished Series X listing identifies an optical drive, but that does not establish the configuration of every used Series X.

Compare the storage capacity stated in the listing with the console’s settings. Configurations and available free space can differ, so do not assume a shorthand capacity means that amount is available for games. Microsoft’s refurbished Series X page lists support for a 1TB Series X|S expansion card; treat an expansion card as an optional added cost, not something included unless the seller confirms it.

Inspect the hardware before testing it
Ask for the precise model and storage tier, included accessories, purchase date, receipt if available, and any repair history. Match the answers to the console in front of you. Look over the casing, vents, HDMI and USB ports, power connection, and storage expansion slot for cracks, corrosion, bent or loose connectors, heavy dirt, or signs of an unprofessional opening.
Do not open the console as part of an ordinary buyer inspection. Microsoft’s Series X safety and repair instructions are service guidance, not a recommendation for buyers to disassemble a unit.

Test the console in person
Bring or request access to a known-working display, HDMI cable, network connection, controller, and any audio or USB device you want to check. Microsoft’s service guide lists these types of equipment and functional checks, including launching a game.

- Boot and display: Connect the console to a display with a known-working HDMI cable. Confirm the image is stable and the console reaches setup or the dashboard without repeated errors or shutdowns. If possible, change a display setting and gently move the cable at the connector to check for an intermittent connection; do not force it.
- Launch a game: Play long enough to check for crashes, freezes, visual dropouts, or unexpected shutdowns. Listen for grinding, rattling, or unusually loud fan behavior. Microsoft’s service guide describes launching a game as a functional check, but does not specify a guaranteed test duration or noise threshold.
- Check network and audio: Connect through Wi-Fi or Ethernet and confirm the console can proceed through online setup or reach services. Test the expected audio output and any ports you plan to use with a known-working device.
- Test the controller: Pair it, then check both sticks for drift, every face button, bumpers, triggers, the D-pad, and vibration. If it is missing or fails, factor a replacement Xbox Wireless Controller into the deal rather than assuming one is necessary for every buyer.
Test the disc drive only on a drive-equipped Series X
If the console has an optical drive, insert a known-working game disc. Confirm it is recognized and can launch or install, listen for abnormal mechanical sounds, and check that the disc ejects normally. A Series S has no disc drive to test. If a Series X listing does not make the configuration clear, inspect the actual console before treating a missing drive as a fault.

Reset the console and complete the handoff
Ask the seller to remove their account and use the reset option that removes everything. Confirm the console reaches its first-time setup flow. If the seller and network connection allow it, complete setup with your own account before paying.
Do not treat installed games, subscriptions, or the seller’s digital library as part of the hardware purchase. The previous owner’s account and purchase history are not a reliable transfer of ownership.

Reduce risk when buying remotely
Ask for a recent, continuous video showing the console booting, its model and serial label, a game launching, the controller being tested, and the disc drive working if the unit has one. Video can help establish that the console worked at the time recorded, but it cannot rule out intermittent faults or prove the unit will arrive intact.

- Request the original receipt and serial number. Check service eligibility through Microsoft’s support process for the relevant region rather than assuming warranty coverage transfers or remains active.

When an official refurbished console may suit you better
