A clean-looking phone or a successful diagnostic is not proof that it is unlocked, free of restrictions, or suitable for your network.
1. Confirm the model and IMEI
On the phone, open Settings > About phone and note the model number and IMEI. Compare them with the listing and, if available, the box and purchase documents. Samsung says these are unique device identifiers; its support guidance on finding the IMEI and serial number also lists Samsung Members, the packaging, and *#06# as ways to locate them where supported.

If the details do not match, pause and ask the seller to explain before proceeding. An IMEI match by itself does not prove that a phone is authentic, legitimately owned, or clear to activate.
2. Inspect the phone and run diagnostics
Check the hardware in person
Look closely at the screen for cracks, discoloration, or areas that do not respond to touch. Inspect the frame and camera lenses, then try the buttons, cameras, speaker, microphone, charging connection, and any wireless features you expect to use. Test the phone while it is powered on rather than relying on listing photos.

Run Samsung’s available tests
Open Samsung Members > Diagnostics > Phone diagnostics, or Device care > Diagnostics if that path is available on the phone. Samsung says Phone diagnostics can check hardware and software issues; its available tests may include the touchscreen, cameras, speaker, microphone, buttons, USB or cable charging, SIM, mobile network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sensors, fingerprint, NFC, and battery status. The tests shown vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s diagnostics instructions.
If a test fails, ask what the fault means and what repair would cost before deciding. A pass is useful evidence about the tested functions, not a warranty or proof that every component is defect-free.

3. Check battery condition and behavior
If available, ask the seller to show the battery result in Samsung Members. Also watch how the phone behaves during the inspection: unusually fast drain or unexpected shutdowns can indicate battery aging. Samsung describes the battery as a consumable component that degrades naturally over time and outlines these warning signs in its battery guidance.

A software status result cannot guarantee how long the phone will run in everyday use. Samsung’s cited guidance does not set a universal minimum battery percentage or remaining-capacity threshold for buying a used phone, so treat the test as one input alongside observed behavior and any likely service cost.

4. Make sure the previous owner’s accounts are removed
Ask the seller to remove their Google and Samsung accounts and complete the appropriate reset. Then check that the phone reaches setup and can proceed without asking for the former owner’s Google credentials. Google Factory Reset Protection may require the Google account previously registered on a phone after it has been reset; without the right account handling, a buyer may be unable to finish setup. Samsung explains this in its Factory Reset Protection guidance and account and reset instructions.
Do not rely on a promise to remove an account later. If the seller cannot demonstrate that the phone is transferable and setup can proceed, do not treat it as ready to buy.

5. Ask about warranty and repair history
Request the original receipt and any repair records. On supported US devices linked to a Samsung account, Samsung’s Warranty and care feature may show the coverage type, expiration, plan details, and repair history. Availability depends on the device, software, account linkage, and region; consult Samsung’s Warranty and care information for the US feature.
Do not assume a warranty transfers to a second owner or applies outside the original sales region. Check the relevant local terms directly before counting coverage as part of the phone’s value.

6. Confirm carrier compatibility and IMEI status separately
Before payment, contact the carrier you intend to use. Ask whether the exact model and carrier variant can be activated, how to verify that it is unlocked, and whether the IMEI is eligible for service. Use the carrier’s own device-check process if offered.
A Samsung diagnostic can test SIM and mobile-network functions, but it does not establish compatibility with your carrier or confirm that a specific IMEI is clear of lost, stolen, financing, or other service restrictions. Samsung’s support guidance does not provide a universal check for those listing-specific states.
7. Compare listings on the checks that affect your decision
When choosing between phones, compare the details that can change usability and the true cost:
- Exact model, storage capacity, and carrier variant.
- Screen, frame, camera, buttons, ports, and diagnostic results.
- Battery symptoms and any available Samsung Members battery status.
- Whether the seller can remove accounts and demonstrate setup.
- Proof of purchase, available warranty details, and repair records.
- Carrier confirmation, unlock status, and the seller’s return policy.
- Total cost after any likely repair or battery service.
Samsung’s guidance supports the identity, diagnostic, battery, warranty, and reset-protection checks above. It does not establish a fair price or a particular return period, so assess those using the exact phone, seller terms, and likely repair needs.
