Before you pay, identify the phone’s exact model and regional variant, confirm it is unlocked, and check its IMEI with the US carrier you plan to use. Then verify that the variant supports the carrier’s network features and inspect the individual phone. “Unlocked” alone does not guarantee that a device will activate or provide full coverage, calling, or data service.
Start with the exact model and regional variant
Ask for the model number, not just a family name such as Axon or Blade. ZTE’s support catalog lists distinct products including the Axon 30, Axon 30 Ultra 5G, Axon 40 Pro, and Axon 40 Ultra, and notes that availability can vary by region. A phone with a familiar name may have different specifications depending on its variant or sales region.

- Ask the seller for the model code, region or market variant, storage configuration, and carrier history.
- Compare the seller’s details with the model information in the phone’s Settings, usually under About phone, and with the physical device.
- Look up support information for that exact model. ZTE’s catalog does not establish that a listed phone is currently sold new in the US, or specify a support end date or update commitment for every model.
Do not use a band list for one ZTE phone as proof that another ZTE model supports the same frequencies. ZTE’s connectivity guidance illustrates why frequency support matters, but its example bands are not universal specifications for Axon, Blade, or carrier-branded devices.

Check the actual IMEI with your intended carrier
Get the IMEI for the specific phone being sold and run it through the carrier’s own bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker before paying. A generic listing claim such as “works with all carriers” is not a substitute. A checker can assess eligibility for its network; no individual phone’s live eligibility can be established without checking its IMEI.

- Ask the seller for the IMEI. Use the IMEI of the device you are buying, not a number from another listing or a different phone of the same model.
- Open your carrier’s BYOD or compatibility page. T-Mobile’s BYOD checker uses the device IMEI to assess compatibility and may identify lock status. AT&T’s BYOD guidance asks customers to check compatibility and confirm the device is unlocked; its process calls for an IMEI or ESN.
- Follow the result for that exact device. If the checker cannot confirm eligibility, contact the carrier before purchase rather than treating uncertainty as approval.
- Check again in person if possible. Match the IMEI being checked to the phone you will receive and rerun the checker before completing the sale.
Carrier checkers are a practical screening step, not a promise of performance. A brief test or an eligibility result cannot guarantee coverage everywhere or future acceptance under changing carrier requirements.
Verify unlock status separately from compatibility
Unlock status and network compatibility are separate questions. T-Mobile says a device must be unlocked for compatibility but also directs customers to check network compatibility. AT&T likewise tells BYOD customers to check compatibility and confirm that the phone is unlocked. A phone can be unlocked and still lack the network support needed for your carrier.

- Ask the seller to demonstrate the phone’s lock status and, if available, have the intended carrier’s checker identify it.
- If it is still locked, ask the original carrier to confirm eligibility and complete the unlock before the sale. Do not rely on a seller’s promise that it can be unlocked later.
- If the seller cannot establish that the phone is unlocked, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming a SIM test or listing label proves it.
Compare network features, not just band names
Compare the exact variant’s supported frequencies and voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) support with the intended carrier’s current requirements. T-Mobile’s network guidance calls out frequency and VoLTE checks, warns that partial compatibility can mean reduced coverage or slower speeds, and says it does not guarantee third-party-device performance. An unlocked phone may therefore work only partly, or lack a needed calling feature.
For Verizon or a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), use that provider’s own eligibility checker. Do not infer eligibility from the fact that a phone is unlocked or from assumptions about GSM support.

Inspect the individual phone before paying
Carrier eligibility says nothing about the condition of the particular used unit. For an in-person purchase, test the phone methodically:
- Identity and access: Confirm the model in Settings matches the listing. Have the seller remove their accounts and screen lock, then verify that factory-reset protection will not prevent you from setting up the phone.
- Screen and frame: Look for cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, touch failures, lifting edges, bent areas, and damage to the camera glass.
- Ports and controls: Test charging, the buttons, and the SIM tray. Check for visible damage or looseness around ports.
- Calls and connectivity: Test microphones, speakers, cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and biometrics if present. If practical, insert a SIM, place a call, send a text, and try mobile data.
- Battery: Observe how the battery behaves during use. Do not treat an estimate as precise battery health unless the device provides a trustworthy measurement.
A successful call or data test at the meeting location confirms only that the phone worked briefly under those conditions; it does not prove full coverage or future carrier acceptance.

Reduce the risks of a remote purchase
- Request current photos or video of the specific phone, including its model information and visible condition; do not rely on stock images.
- Get the model number and IMEI early enough to run the carrier check before paying.
- Ask about repair history, water exposure, included charger or accessories, and the return window.
- Request proof of purchase or other reasonable evidence of ownership, and clarify what happens if the IMEI is blocked or the phone differs from the description.
- Use a payment method with buyer protection and avoid relying on an “unlocked” label without carrier verification.
Compare listings on the factors that affect usability
