Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe safest used-gadget purchase starts with the exact model, not the seller’s grade label or a low price. Before paying, verify that the device still receives security updates, has no relevant recall, matches the listing, works for your intended task, uses compatible parts, and comes with return or dispute protection you can actually use. Then inspect it promptly, reset it, and update it.
This checklist applies to phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, game systems, wearables, routers and other older electronics. Some checks are product-specific, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and software version.

1. Identify exactly what you are buying
“Older phone” or “used laptop” is not precise enough to assess support, compatibility or value. Record the full identity before comparing prices:
- Manufacturer and exact model number
- Generation, release variant or regional version
- Storage, memory, processor, screen size and other configuration details
- Network or connectivity version, such as cellular bands, Wi-Fi generation or a region-specific model
- Included accessories and the condition you require
- The job it must do, such as calls, navigation, photography, streaming, gaming or a particular app
Use the model number printed on the device, packaging or settings screen rather than relying on a listing title. Different variants can use different chargers, cellular bands, parts or software-support schedules.

2. Check software support before condition
A clean-looking gadget can be a poor purchase when its manufacturer has stopped issuing security updates. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises avoiding phones that are no longer supported where possible because they no longer receive manufacturer security updates. Its second-hand-device guidance was published in 2020 and reviewed in 2022; the current support page for the exact model is the authority for what is supported now. NCSC guidance
Check the maker’s current support page for:
- The final operating-system version available for that model
- Whether security updates are still supplied and, if so, for how long
- Whether support differs by region, carrier or edition
- Known compatibility limits for the apps or services you need
Do not infer support from the device’s age alone. Two products released around the same time can have different update policies, and a seller’s statement that a device is “up to date” only describes the installed software at that moment.
3. Search recalls and product-safety alerts
Search the official recall and product-safety alert database relevant to the product and your country. Include the exact model, battery or power-supply identifier where available. A recall can concern a charger, battery, hinge, overheating fault or other component rather than the main device.

Health Canada warns that “Some older products might not meet current safety standards or have been recalled.” Its electrical-product advice also says that incompatible replacement parts can be unsafe, and that replacement lithium-ion batteries from unknown sources can present risks. Health Canada: buying electrical products online
For products used near water, heat or children, treat a missing safety history as a reason to investigate further, not as proof that the item is safe. The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) recommends physical checks where wear can create a safety risk. UK second-hand safety guidance
4. Verify the seller and the listing
Ask questions that force a specific answer and keep the replies in writing. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking the seller’s information, reviewing the listing carefully and retaining records when buying through an online marketplace. FTC marketplace advice

Questions to ask
- How long have you owned it, and why are you selling it?
- What repairs, replacements, modifications or water exposure has it had?
- What faults are present, intermittent or previously repaired?
- Which functions did you test, and when?
- What exactly is included: original charger, cables, battery, case, remote, mounting hardware or manuals?
- Is it free of an account lock, activation lock, finance balance or network restriction?
- Are the photos of this exact unit, and can you provide a current photo of the serial or model label?
Compare the answers with the listing and photographs. Be cautious when a seller uses only stock images, avoids model-specific questions, omits contact details or prices an expensive item implausibly low. Save the listing, photos, messages and promised condition before paying; they are useful evidence if the delivered item differs.
5. Read protection terms before you pay
Price is only one part of the transaction. Before checkout, locate:
- The return window and the date it begins
- Who pays return shipping and whether a restocking fee applies
- Any warranty, certification or “refurbished” promise, including exclusions
- Shipping insurance, delivery requirements and damage-reporting deadlines
- The marketplace’s dispute process and evidence requirements
- Whether the seller is a business or a private individual
Use payment inside the marketplace and choose a method that offers buyer protection where applicable. Legal rights, warranty rules and dispute remedies vary by country, platform and seller type; do not assume a protection described for one jurisdiction applies everywhere. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance also emphasizes reviewing the seller’s policies before buying. Apple pre-owned iPhone buying guide
6. Check chargers, batteries and other parts separately
A connector that fits does not prove electrical compatibility. Confirm the exact voltage, current, wattage, polarity, connector standard and manufacturer requirements for every charger, adapter, battery and dock. Check whether a replacement is approved for that model and region.
Do not buy an unknown-source lithium-ion replacement merely because it is cheaper or has the same physical dimensions. Look for swelling, punctures, corrosion, damaged insulation, frayed leads, overheating or a loose connector. Stop using a battery or charger that becomes unusually hot, smells strange, leaks or shows physical deformation.
Recommended Free Tools
For an item with a removable battery, ask whether the supplied battery is original, approved or a replacement, and whether its age is known. For sealed devices, a seller’s “excellent battery” label is not a universal measurement; request the device’s own health information where available.

7. Inspect the actual item in person or immediately after delivery
Use the following sequence while you can still decline the purchase or exercise the return policy.
Exterior and structural condition
- Inspect the case, frame, screen, hinges, seams, feet, buttons, ports and connectors under good light.
- Look for cracks, deep dents, bent frames, corrosion, liquid indicators, loose parts, missing screws and signs of opening.
- Check for battery swelling that lifts a screen, separates a case or makes a trackpad hard to click.
- Examine camera covers, speakers, microphones, vents, fans and removable panels for blockage or damage.
- Confirm that included accessories match the listing and are in safe condition.
- Compare the serial number, model number and configuration on the device with the listing and paperwork when available.
Cosmetic wear can be acceptable when disclosed. Structural damage, corrosion, swelling, a bent frame or evidence of unsafe modification deserves a lower price only if you understand the resulting risk; otherwise walk away.
Power, charging and controls
- Start the device from a fully powered-off state and note whether it boots normally.
- Connect the intended charger and check that charging begins without a loose cable, warning or abnormal heat.
- Operate every physical button, switch, hinge, wheel, joystick, keyboard key and trackpad relevant to your use.
- Adjust brightness and volume through their full ranges.
- Check sleep, wake, shutdown and restart behavior.
A device that only works while connected to power, repeatedly restarts, shows warning messages or takes an unusually long time to boot needs a specific explanation and a repair-cost comparison.
Screen, sound and sensors
- Display a white, black and solid-color image to reveal dead pixels, discoloration, burn-in, flicker and uneven brightness.
- Test touch across the entire screen, including edges and corners, if it has a touchscreen.
- Play audio through built-in speakers and the headphone output or wireless link used by the buyer.
- Test microphones, cameras, flash, proximity, ambient-light, motion, location and biometric sensors where fitted.
Connections and storage
- Connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and confirm that the connection remains stable.
- Test cellular service, a call and mobile data on a phone when practical and lawful for the buyer’s network.
- Check every required USB, video, memory-card, charging or proprietary port.
- Verify the advertised storage and memory in the operating system, not only on the box.
- Insert and remove cards or accessories gently; a port that works only at one angle may need repair.
8. Phone-specific checks
Phones have account, network and battery checks that do not map neatly to every other gadget.
Activation and account locks
For a pre-owned iPhone, Apple’s instruction is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Apple Support The previous owner must remove the device from their account and you should be able to begin setup with your own account. Do not accept a promise that the lock will be removed later.
On other platforms, look for equivalent factory-reset protection, enterprise management, remote-management enrollment, finance restrictions or an account that remains attached. The correct menu and terminology depend on the manufacturer and software version. Ask the seller to erase the device in front of you, then proceed far enough through setup to verify that it accepts your account.

- Kit designed for wider coverage & faster testing
Network or carrier lock
Confirm that the phone works with the network you intend to use. A phone can be fully functional yet restricted to a carrier, region or particular SIM or eSIM arrangement. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and your carrier’s compatibility tool for the exact model. Test the SIM or eSIM, calls, text messages and data before the return period ends.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Battery and repair history
Use the manufacturer’s battery-health screen where one exists, and record the result and any service warning. Also inspect parts-and-service or repair-history information when the operating system provides it. These menus vary by model and software version, so absence of a menu is not proof that no repair occurred.
Battery percentage alone is not a universal pass/fail threshold. Compare the reported condition with your expected daily use, the cost of an approved replacement and the seller’s return terms. An advertised “refurbished” label does not by itself establish that the battery or any other component was replaced.
9. High-value or safety-critical gadgets deserve an independent check
For an expensive camera, laptop, instrument, appliance or other complex electronic item, consider an independent inspection when the seller cannot demonstrate a key function or the safety history is unclear. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recommends considering independent advice for high-value second-hand products. ACCC second-hand buying guide
Ask the inspector to identify the fault, the parts required, the likely labor cost and whether the repair restores safe operation. Compare that total with the price of another verified unit. Do not open a sealed, mains-powered or high-voltage product yourself unless you are qualified to do so.
10. Compare used options by evidence, not grade labels
“A-grade,” “excellent” and “refurbished” are not universal standards. Ask what each label means and what was actually tested. Use this comparison framework for every candidate:

| Decision factor | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact identity | Model, generation, region, configuration and storage | Determines software support, network bands, parts and performance |
| Support | Current update status and any stated end date | Security and app compatibility depend on ongoing support |
| Actual condition | Cracks, corrosion, swelling, wear and missing components | Reveals safety and repair risk that a grade may hide |
| Working functions | Tests completed for the buyer’s intended use | A cosmetic inspection cannot prove functionality |
| Battery and repairs | Health information, service history and modifications where available | May change runtime, reliability and replacement cost |
| Compatibility | Charger, battery, accessories, network and required apps | Prevents an apparently cheap device from becoming unusable |
| Total cost | Purchase, shipping, accessories, repairs and likely replacement parts | Shows the real cost rather than the sticker price |
| Protection | Return deadline, warranty language and dispute route | Determines what you can do when the item is not as described |
The official consumer guidance does not establish a universal used-device grade or one battery-health cutoff for all older gadgets. Evidence from the exact item is more useful than a label shared by many sellers.
11. What to do when the gadget arrives
- Photograph the package, shipping label, seals and device before removing anything that could document damage.
- Compare the model, serial or configuration and accessories with the saved listing.
- Repeat the power, charging, screen, controls, connection and intended-use tests.
- Check account locks, network restrictions and battery information before transferring personal data.
- Record defects with photos or video and notify the seller or marketplace within the stated deadline.
- Do not begin a repair, dispose of packaging or send the item back outside the instructed process if doing so could weaken your claim.
If the item is not as described, use the marketplace’s formal return or dispute workflow promptly. Keep the listing, messages, payment record, tracking information, test results and photographs together.
12. Secure and update it after purchase
For a second-hand connected device, follow the manufacturer’s erase or factory-reset instructions before adding your accounts. The NCSC advises resetting devices to remove the previous owner’s data and enabling automatic updates when prompted. NCSC second-hand device guidance

- Perform the supported factory reset or secure erase.
- Install the latest available operating-system and firmware updates.
- Enable automatic updates where supported.
- Set a strong screen lock and configure your own account and recovery details.
- Review installed apps, administrator profiles, remote-management settings and connected accounts.
- Change credentials that may have been exposed and remove any payment or personal data left by the previous owner.
- Back up the clean setup after it is working normally.
If the device cannot be reset, remains tied to another person’s account or is still enrolled in an organization’s management system, contact the seller rather than attempting to bypass the protection.
13. Red flags that justify walking away
- The seller will not identify the exact model or provide photos of the actual item.
- The price is implausibly low and the explanation is vague.
- The seller refuses a basic power-on or function test.
- There is swelling, corrosion, liquid damage, a bent frame, exposed wiring or overheating.
- The serial or model information does not match the listing.
- An account, activation, finance, carrier or remote-management lock remains enabled.
- Replacement parts are unknown, incompatible or unsafe.
- The seller will not state the return deadline or insists on payment outside the platform.
- The device no longer receives security updates and your use requires current apps or connected services.
One minor scratch should not outweigh a verified, supported device with strong protections. Several unresolved red flags should.
14. A compact decision checklist
Before paying, you should be able to answer “yes” to each applicable item:
- Do I know the exact model and configuration?
- Does the manufacturer still support it well enough for my use?
- Have I searched the relevant recall and safety alerts?
- Are the listing, photos, serial information and seller answers consistent?
- Have I checked the functions that matter, not just the exterior?
- Are the battery, charger, adapter and replacement parts compatible and safe?
- Are account, activation, carrier and management locks removed?
- Do I understand the total cost, return deadline and dispute process?
- Can I inspect and test it promptly after delivery?
If any answer is “no,” pause the transaction and obtain that information or choose another unit. The best used-gadget deal is the one whose support, condition, compatibility and buyer protection are documented before money changes hands.
