What to Check Before Buying a Used Nintendo 64 or Its Games

Before buying a used Nintendo 64, its games, or accessories, inspect the actual items, ask for a working demonstration, confirm region and language, and understand the seller’s return terms. Photos and seals can reveal warning signs, but no single visual detail proves a cartridge is genuine.

Start with a demonstration and a clear inventory

When possible, ask the seller to show the console running with a game inserted. Look for a stable picture and sound, and check that the controller responds. If a particular game is part of the purchase, ask to see that game run rather than relying on a demonstration with another cartridge.

Confirm exactly what is included: console, controller, AC power supply, video lead, and any games or other accessories. Compare that inventory with the listing and ask about known faults before agreeing to buy.

Inspect the console, power supply, and cables

  • Look for cracks, signs of liquid exposure or corrosion, loose connections, and blocked ventilation.
  • Check the power supply and cords for splits, breaks, or other damage. Nintendo advises using the AC power supply provided with the N64 and not operating a damaged cord. Nintendo’s N64 health and safety guidance does not establish that an unclear or substitute power arrangement is safe, so avoid a unit whose power setup or condition you cannot verify.
  • Check that the seller’s demonstration uses the included parts, or clarify which parts are needed to operate the console.

Assess each Game Pak without relying on one clue

Ask for sharp, well-lit photos of the cartridge’s front and back labels, shell, and edge connector. Nintendo’s counterfeit-game guidance identifies poor-quality or faded printing and suspiciously low prices as warning signs. Missing packaging or manuals can also merit caution, but used games may simply have lost their original materials.

Nintendo 64 Console, Premium Bundle (Renewed)
  • Nintendo 64 Console (Black): Retro gaming console in a sleek black finish.
  • Two Controllers (Red & Blue): Includes two vibrant controllers for multiplayer gaming.
  • 256KB Memory Card: Save your game progress easily with ample storage.
  • HDMI Adapter: Modern connectivity for easy setup with today’s TVs
  • Power Adapter: Essential power supply included for immediate play.

Check whether the cartridge’s condition matches its description. A damaged shell, unclear label, or dirty-looking connector is a reason to ask questions or request more photos; it is not, by itself, proof of counterfeiting. Nintendo recommends checking for the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality or Original Nintendo Licensee Seal of Quality, but seals are clues rather than a guarantee: appearances can be copied, and an otherwise legitimate used game may no longer have its packaging.

Confirm region, language, and accessory status

Make sure the game’s region and language are what you want and suit the system you intend to use. Nintendo specifically advises buyers to verify region and language, but its cited guidance does not spell out every N64 regional compatibility combination. Do not assume a particular cartridge will work with a particular console based only on a general listing description; ask the seller to demonstrate it on the intended system when compatibility is uncertain.

For accessories, confirm the exact item and its condition. Nintendo says licensed gaming accessories carry an Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal; unlicensed accessories have not undergone Nintendo’s testing and evaluation and may not work or may have compatibility problems. Older licensed products in North America could have earlier seal designs, so the absence of a modern-looking seal on vintage packaging is not enough to establish that an item is fake. See Nintendo’s guidance on licensed products and counterfeits.

Check the seller and the terms of the sale

  • Prefer a seller whose reputation and transaction history you can review.
  • Look for clear photos of the actual console, cartridge, and accessories rather than relying only on generic images.
  • Ask what happens if an item does not work or differs materially from the listing. Read the return, dispute, and delivery terms before paying.
  • Consider where the seller is located. Nintendo’s auction-site guidance recommends checking the site’s reputation and suggests buying within your country because claims can be harder to investigate across borders. The guidance is available in the search result for Nintendo’s online auction advice; the page itself was not accessible in the cited review, so this recommendation is limited to that summary.

If you are comparing several listings, weigh demonstrated operation and known faults, completeness, cartridge condition and authenticity clues, region and language, seller protections, delivery risk, and price against comparable offers. No current used-price range or failure-rate estimate is established here.

Know what visual authentication can and cannot tell you

Nintendo’s official material offers general warning signs, not a complete N64-specific visual catalogue for authenticating every cartridge. Label quality, seals, packaging, price, and region can all inform a decision, but none alone settles authenticity. For an expensive or collectible game, request detailed images and consider advice from a reputable specialist familiar with that specific cartridge.

Community discussions sometimes suggest opening a cartridge with a game-bit screwdriver to inspect its board, but that is anecdotal advice, not an official Nintendo authentication procedure. Nintendo’s cartridge maintenance instructions say not to take Game Paks apart. Routine disassembly is therefore not a suitable default, particularly when collector condition matters.

Handle the cartridge safely after purchase

Nintendo’s instruction is direct: “Always turn the power switch of the Control Deck off before loading or removing a Game Pak. Insert the Game Pak completely without forcing either the Game Pak or the Control Deck.” Follow the rest of Nintendo’s cartridge-console safety guidance as well:
