The safest way to buy a used CRT for retro gaming is to test the exact television from a cold start with a known console, verify that its real inputs carry the signal your consoles output, and plan how you will move and support its weight. A desirable brand or an attractive seller photo cannot reveal a weak tube, convergence errors, burn-in, incompatible sockets, or an unsafe installation.
Use the checklist below before paying. If the seller will not let you test the set, treat that uncertainty as a reason to walk away or offer only what you can afford to lose.

Start with your consoles, not the television
Write down every console you actually intend to connect and the output it uses. A CRT can have the right-looking connector but still lack the signal format your console requires. Decide whether each system will use composite video, S-Video, component video, RGB, or another path, then look for a television that supports those signals.
This avoids a common mistake: buying a large, attractive set and discovering that it cannot accept your preferred cable without an additional converter. The exact model number matters more than the logo on the cabinet or the screen size. Before arranging pickup, find the model label and consult its manual for input formats, regional television standards, dimensions, and weight.

Connector shape is not signal compatibility
Composite, S-Video, component, and RGB are different connection paths. A socket may physically accept a plug while rejecting the signal, displaying an unstable image, or falling back to a lower-quality mode. SCART is especially easy to misunderstand: a SCART connector by itself does not prove that the television accepts RGB through it.
Nintendo’s official GameCube guidance gives a precise example: its RGB cable works only when the television has an RGB-SCART input. A set with a non-RGB SCART socket will not meet that requirement, even though the cable fits.
Insist on a cold-start demonstration
Ask the seller to leave the television switched off long enough to be cold before you arrive. A set that looks acceptable after warming up can still have startup faults, an unstable image, or brightness that changes as it runs. Watch the entire startup sequence and keep the set operating while you perform the other checks.
- Turn the television on from cold and confirm that a picture appears without repeated power cycling, loud abnormal sounds, or a smell of overheating.
- Leave it running while connected to your known source. An image that slowly collapses, flickers, loses color, or changes size is a serious warning.
- Check that brightness and contrast can be adjusted without the picture becoming unusably dim, washed out, or unstable.
- Switch through every input you expect to use. Confirm that the television identifies or displays each source correctly rather than assuming all sockets work.
Bring a console and cable you know work, plus a familiar game or a test-pattern source. If the seller has equipment already connected, still test with your own known-good setup when possible; a fault in the seller’s cable or console can otherwise be mistaken for a television problem.
Evaluate the picture on test images, not only a game screenshot
A colorful game can hide defects. Use a grid, crosshatch, gray field, white field, or another plain test image if your source can produce one. If not, use a game with straight lines, text, and large flat areas of color. Inspect the whole screen, especially the corners.
Brightness and uniformity
- Look for corners or bands that are noticeably darker than the center.
- Check whether a plain white or gray field has large colored patches, blotches, or uneven tint.
- Make sure the picture remains visible at a normal brightness setting instead of requiring maximum brightness and contrast.
- Watch for pulsing, rolling, intermittent blackouts, or a picture that changes size when bright areas appear.
Some age-related variation is common, but a defect that distracts you on a plain field will usually be more noticeable during games. Decide in advance which imperfections you can accept and price the set accordingly; do not assume an adjustment will cure a failing tube.

Focus and sharpness
Read small menu text and fine details. The image should have usable focus across the screen, not only in the center. A permanently soft picture, smeared text, or visible color edges around high-contrast lines can indicate focus or convergence trouble. Turn off artificial sharpness controls while judging the tube, then try the television’s normal settings to see whether the result is acceptable for your games.

Display a grid or another image with straight horizontal and vertical lines. Look for lines that bow outward or inward, a picture that is tilted, uneven borders, or a visible change in geometry from the center toward the edges. Check whether the game image is centered and whether important areas are cut off.
Minor geometry variation can be tolerable on an older consumer set. Pronounced bowing, a large tilt, or an image that cannot be centered is a practical defect, particularly for games with menus, maps, or platform edges aligned to the screen.
Convergence and color fringing
On white text or a white grid, inspect the edges for separate red, green, or blue shadows. Distinct color separation means the electron beams are not converging correctly. Check all four corners, where convergence errors are often easier to see than in the center. A seller’s attractive gameplay photo may conceal this problem because detailed scenes provide fewer clean reference edges.
Burn-in and persistent ghosts
Show a plain gray or white field and look for logos, score boxes, channel marks, or other shapes that remain visible. A persistent image is phosphor burn-in, which the buying guide describes as permanent; it is not the same as a temporary image that disappears after changing scenes. Do not accept assurances that a few hours of varied gameplay will remove a clearly persistent mark.

Bring the cables for your actual consoles and test each required path. Record which socket produced the picture and whether the television needed a particular menu setting. Do not rely on the color of a connector, the presence of a SCART label, or a seller’s statement that the set is “RGB ready.” Confirm the signal type in the model documentation.

Composite video
Composite is widely available on consumer televisions and is often the easiest path for older consoles. It generally uses a single video connector plus separate audio. Verify that the picture is stable and that the television does not require a region-specific format your console does not output.
S-Video
S-Video keeps luminance and color information on separate conductors and can be cleaner than composite when both the console and television support it. Test the actual S-Video socket; some sets share input selection or use unusual front-panel labeling.
Component video
Component uses separate video channels and is available on some consumer sets and professional monitors. Confirm that the television accepts the resolution and regional format produced by your console. A component-shaped group of connectors does not guarantee support for every signal a modern adapter might output.

RGB and SCART
RGB can provide a sharp picture, but the cable, sync type, regional wiring, and television input must all agree. For a GameCube RGB cable, Nintendo states that the connection is possible only with an RGB-SCART input. Treat that requirement as model-specific evidence rather than assuming every SCART socket behaves the same way.
Read the model label and manual before you buy
Photograph the model and serial labels at the viewing. Then verify the information that determines whether the set fits your setup:
- Supported input types and the exact socket used for each one.
- Whether an RGB-capable SCART input is present, if your cable requires it.
- Regional standards and signal formats supported by the television.
- Screen dimensions, cabinet depth, and the set’s actual weight.
- Menu options for input selection, geometry, overscan, and service-related adjustments.
Do not infer compatibility from a brand reputation or from screen size. Two televisions with the same advertised diagonal can have different input boards, regional versions, or cabinet depths.

Plan the move and the final installation
CRT televisions are deep and front-heavy. Measure the route from the seller’s location to its final stand: doorways, stair turns, elevator openings, vehicle cargo space, and the clearance behind the stand all matter. Measure the furniture too, including its usable depth and the area needed for cables and ventilation.
Use the exact weight, not a size guess
A 2026 editorial buying guide gives rough examples of about 100 pounds for a 27-inch consumer CRT and more than 150 pounds for a 32-inch set. These are practical estimates, not specifications for every model. Check the television’s label or manual for the exact weight and dimensions before arranging transport.
For a large set, use at least two capable people and a suitable moving strap. Hold the cabinet, not the glass screen, and keep the television upright during handling. Confirm that the stand is rated for the actual weight and has a stable, level top. A smaller tested television is often the better choice if the larger one cannot be moved or supported safely.
Choose a workable size
The same guide describes 20 to 27 inches as a commonly manageable range for retro consoles. Treat that as editorial guidance, not a rule. Viewing distance, room layout, cabinet depth, and the number of people available to move the set are more important than chasing a particular diagonal measurement.

If your source outputs HDMI, it cannot plug directly into a traditional CRT input. You need a conversion chain that matches the source, regional video format, and the CRT’s available input. The buying guide distinguishes HDMI-to-composite conversion from HDMI-to-RGB/SCART conversion: the latter can provide better image quality but usually costs more.

There is no universally compatible adapter. Before buying one, identify the HDMI source’s output resolution and refresh rate, the CRT input’s accepted format, and whether the converter outputs composite, component, or RGB with the required sync. Treat conversion as a conditional extra, not a default CRT accessory. Test the complete chain with the actual console before committing to the television if possible.

Consumer CRT television versus professional monitor
Compare the exact unit you can inspect, not category stereotypes. Condition and compatibility outweigh a prestigious model name.

For most buyers, first list the consoles and signal paths, then select the healthiest unit that meets them. A smaller television that you can test, carry, and place securely is preferable to a larger monitor that cannot be transported or whose inputs do not match your systems.
Radiation safety is different from electrical condition
The US Food and Drug Administration states: “TV receivers and computer monitors containing CRTs no longer pose a risk of emitting any x-radiation.” That statement addresses x-rays from CRT operation. It does not certify that an old television is electrically sound, free of insulation damage, or safe to open.

Stop using it if you notice smoke, a persistent burning smell, damaged power wiring, arcing, or other abnormal behavior.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The seller refuses a cold-start test or will not let you connect a known source.
- The picture never becomes stable, changes size dramatically, or loses brightness or color while warming up.
- Strong bowing, tilt, severe corner convergence errors, or a large unadjustable area of blur.
- Persistent logos or other burn-in that affects the games you intend to play.
- The required input is absent, or the seller cannot establish that the socket carries the needed signal.
- The model’s depth or weight exceeds your route, vehicle, stand, or available help.
- Visible cabinet damage, damaged power cord, overheating smell, smoke, or electrical noise.
A low price does not compensate for a set you cannot safely move, connect, or watch comfortably.
A practical buying-day procedure
- Confirm the exact model number and photograph the labels.
- Ask when the set was last operated and require a demonstration from cold.
- Connect your known-good console, cable, and familiar game or test pattern.
- Check startup stability, brightness, focus, color balance, and the entire picture area.
- Use a grid or plain field to inspect geometry, tilt, convergence, and burn-in.
- Test every input required by your console list and note the successful signal path.
- Compare the measured route, stand capacity, and vehicle space with the model’s documented dimensions and weight.
- Agree on a transport plan using enough people and appropriate straps; keep the set upright.
- Pay only after the television passes the checks you consider essential.
How to decide when two sets both pass
Give priority to the set with the cleaner plain-field picture, stable geometry, usable focus, and no distracting burn-in. Next, choose the one that supports your consoles directly, without a complicated conversion chain. Then consider screen size, viewing distance, price, and transport effort.
When picture quality is close, favor the lighter and shallower television that fits your furniture with room for ventilation. A well-tested 20-to-27-inch consumer set can be a more practical gaming system than a larger, harder-to-move model with uncertain inputs. The individual tube and input board determine your experience more than the badge on the front.
