Before buying a USB-C hub, check what your laptop’s specific USB-C port supports—not just whether the plug fits. Confirm its data capability, video path and, if you want one-cable charging, USB Power Delivery input. Then match those capabilities to the hub’s documented display modes, host-charging output, downstream ports and power budget.
1. Check what your laptop’s USB-C port can do
USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed set of features. A port may support data without supporting monitor output or charging the laptop. Look up your exact laptop model and, where available, the specific port in its manual or specifications. Check these capabilities separately:

- Data: Confirm the supported USB standard or stated data rate, especially if you plan to use a fast external SSD or another high-bandwidth device.
- Video: Look for DisplayPort Alternate Mode, a compatible USB4 display path or Thunderbolt video support. Microsoft’s Windows docking guidance treats USB data, USB Power Delivery sink support and DisplayPort Alternate Mode as separate host-side capabilities. Its recommendations are Windows platform guidance, not a guarantee for every laptop or operating system.
- Charging input: If you expect the hub to charge the laptop, confirm the laptop accepts USB-C Power Delivery charging on the port you’ll use.
Do not infer any of these features from the USB-C shape or a hub’s connector labels alone.
2. Match the video path to your monitor setup
Write down each monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, how many displays you want to connect, and which hub output you intend to use. Then verify the complete path: the laptop’s video capability, the hub’s supported host connection and the hub’s documented output modes for that setup. An HDMI or DisplayPort socket on a hub does not, by itself, mean your laptop can send video through it or that the hub will deliver your preferred resolution and refresh rate.

USB4 can carry data and display traffic over a shared link. USB-IF says USB4 compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices is supported, with a connection scaling to the best mutual capability of the connected devices (USB4 overview). Microsoft explains that USB4 bandwidth is allocated among USB 3.x, PCIe and DisplayPort traffic; insufficient bandwidth can reduce display capability or prevent a display tunnel from working (USB4 design details). For multi-monitor or high-refresh configurations, use the hub maker’s documented display combinations and the laptop’s specifications—not the connector name alone.
Microsoft’s wired-dock guidance recommends a digital external-monitor connector of at least HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 and a minimum 1080p resolution for its dock design guidance (Docking recommendations). These are baseline recommendations, not a promise that any hub will support a particular monitor’s maximum resolution or refresh rate.

3. Check charging and the power budget
For one-cable charging, compare the laptop’s required USB-C charging input with the hub’s stated host-charging output. Check whether the hub needs an external USB-C charger and whether that charger is included. A hub’s host-charging figure and the total rating of its adapter are different specifications.

USB-IF says USB PD Revision 3.1 supports up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector (USB Power Delivery). That is a standard capability ceiling, not a claim that a given laptop, hub or cable supports 240 W. Use the exact product specifications to establish their limits.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The hub must also allocate power between the laptop and attached devices. Microsoft’s wired-dock guidance recommends budgeting at least 30 W for the upstream host and provides separate examples for downstream USB-A and USB-C devices. It notes that a dock may reduce host charging or stop it if the total power budget is exceeded (Docking recommendations). Those are Windows docking design recommendations; the hub’s actual specifications govern its behavior.
4. Count the ports and check what each one does
List what you plan to leave connected: storage, keyboard and mouse receivers, webcam, wired network, card reader, audio, displays and devices you want to charge. Compare that list with the hub’s ports, checking function as well as shape. Two USB-C-shaped downstream ports on the same hub may differ in data rate or power capability. Confirm whether each port supports the data, charging or video function you need, and check how much power it can supply to attached devices.

5. Check the cable, size and operating requirements
If the hub has a built-in host cable, check its length and whether it can reach your laptop’s port without awkward placement. If it requires a separate USB-C-to-USB-C cable, match that cable’s data and power ratings to the hub and your intended setup. USB-IF’s cable-compliance guidance says cables in its certification program carry a 60 W or 240 W power logo; cables other than USB 2.0 High-Speed also carry an appropriate data-rate marking (USB-IF USB-C cable guidance). A power rating alone does not establish support for a desired high-speed data or video setup.
Before ordering, also check the operating system and any driver requirements stated for the hub, whether the hub is bus-powered or uses an external adapter, and whether its size leaves neighboring laptop ports accessible. Confirm these details in the manufacturer documentation for both devices.
Best Value
- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
6. Compare hubs against the same requirements
Use your laptop and connected devices as the comparison baseline. For each candidate, record the following rather than comparing connector counts alone:
- Host compatibility: Exact laptop port capabilities and stated operating-system support.
- Video: Host video protocol, output connectors, number of displays and documented resolution/refresh-rate combinations.
- Charging: Maximum host Power Delivery output, laptop input requirement, required adapter and power allocation when devices are connected.
- Data: Host link standard and speed, plus each downstream port’s data capability.
- Ports and device power: Required port types, number of ports and power available to connected accessories.
- Practical fit: Cable length, hub dimensions and placement, included adapter and available warranty or support information.
The right hub depends on your exact laptop, monitors and peripherals, and on whether you need charging through the hub. There is no universal choice that can be identified from the USB-C connector alone.
