The safest way to buy a tablet during an online sale is to verify the exact model and configuration, calculate the complete checkout cost, investigate the seller, read the sale’s return and delivery rules, confirm warranty coverage, pay through a protected method, and save every record. A large discount is useful only when you are comparing the same tablet under the same conditions.
This checklist is written primarily for U.S. shoppers. Consumer-protection rules, taxes, warranties, and marketplace policies can differ elsewhere, so buyers outside the United States should check local law and the seller’s written terms.

1. Decide what you need before looking at a deal
Sales create pressure to choose quickly. Start by writing down what the tablet must do, how you will use it, and which compromises are acceptable. A tablet for reading and video has different priorities from one used for drawing, remote work, school software, gaming, or field work.

Make a short requirements list
| Use case | Record before shopping | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reading, browsing, and streaming | Preferred screen size, weight, display characteristics, speakers, and battery expectations | These affect comfort during long sessions more than a sale percentage does. |
| School or office work | Required apps, keyboard or stylus needs, connectivity, storage, and operating-system compatibility | A cheap tablet is not a bargain if it cannot run the software or accessories you need. |
| Drawing, photo, or video work | Pen support, display requirements, storage, and the exact applications you plan to use | Support can vary by model within the same product family. |
| Travel or field use | Weight, cellular or Wi-Fi configuration, battery expectations, durability, and charging equipment | The connectivity and included equipment can change the practical cost. |
Use your list to set must-haves and nice-to-haves. Do not let a low price turn a nice-to-have into an expensive compromise.

For additional general questions to consider when comparing tablets, see Consumer Reports’ tablet buying guide. Treat any model, price, or availability information on a retailer’s current sale page as separate and time-sensitive.
2. Identify the exact tablet, not just the product family
Tablet families often include several generations, screen sizes, storage levels, connectivity options, colors, and bundled accessories. A product photo and a broad family name are not enough to establish that two listings are the same item.
Record the identifying details
- Manufacturer and complete model name.
- Exact model number or other manufacturer identifier.
- Screen size and any generation or release designation shown by the manufacturer.
- Color, storage capacity, and connectivity configuration.
- Every item included in the box, such as a charger, cable, keyboard, cover, or stylus.
- Condition: new, used, open-box, refurbished, clearance, or another stated grade.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends recording model numbers and product details so that you compare matching items rather than superficially similar listings. Its online-shopping guidance also recommends comparison shopping and reading the complete deal terms.

Check the listing against the manufacturer’s information
Copy the model number from the listing and look for the same identifier in the manufacturer’s documentation or support pages. Make sure the specifications shown in the sale listing do not describe a different size or configuration. If the listing omits a detail that affects your decision, ask the seller in writing before paying and keep the response.
Do not assume that a photograph proves what will arrive. Marketplace images may be stock photos, and a picture of a tablet may not show the included storage, connectivity, accessories, or condition.
3. Calculate the real checkout price
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not the crossed-out “regular” price or the headline discount. For every candidate, write down each cost before deciding.

| Cost or condition | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Item price | Is this price for the exact model and condition you identified? |
| Shipping and handling | Are these charges added at checkout, and do they change with delivery speed? |
| Taxes | What tax is calculated for your delivery address? |
| Other fees | Are there marketplace, processing, recycling, or service fees? |
| Bundle requirement | Does the discount require a subscription, accessory, trade-in, or other purchase you do not want? |
| Payment or financing condition | Does the advertised price depend on a particular payment method, installment plan, or account? |
| Future price policy | Does the seller offer a price match or post-purchase adjustment if the price falls again? |
Save a screenshot or PDF of the cart and checkout page showing the final total and conditions. A price-adjustment policy is optional and varies by seller; read its deadline, exclusions, and qualifying competitors rather than assuming a later reduction will be honored.
The FTC’s online-shopping guidance advises comparing prices and reading all deal terms. A discount is meaningful only when the listings, conditions, and complete totals are comparable.
4. Investigate the seller and the listing
On a marketplace, the website displaying the tablet may not be the company selling or shipping it. Identify the actual seller, the fulfiller, and the process for getting help.
Confirm who is responsible for the order
- Look for a business name, physical or mailing address, customer-service contact, and clear seller profile.
- Determine whether the marketplace, the seller, or a third-party logistics company fulfills the order.
- Read the marketplace’s protection or dispute rules for this seller and this type of product.
- Check whether the seller’s return instructions differ from the marketplace’s general policy.
The FTC’s marketplace guide recommends checking seller refund and return rules, finding out who can help if something goes wrong, and using a safe payment method.
Use reviews as clues, not proof
Look for recent feedback in more than one source and read the written comments. Star averages alone cannot establish that a tablet is genuine or in the advertised condition. Reviews can be fake, misleading, or incentivized. Pay attention to comments about the exact seller, packaging, model number, battery or cosmetic condition, missing accessories, delivery, and how complaints were resolved.
Inspect photos and descriptions closely
Used, open-box, refurbished, and clearance listings need special scrutiny. Determine whether the photographs show the actual unit or a stock image. Look for disclosed scratches, dents, screen marks, battery limitations, missing parts, replaced components, activation locks, or region restrictions. If the condition is vague, treat that uncertainty as a cost and ask for clarification before ordering.

Treat an unusually low price as a signal to investigate
The FTC warns that a very low price for an expensive item may indicate a counterfeit or other fraud. It is a reason to examine the seller, model details, payment method, and marketplace protections; it is not, by itself, proof that the listing is fraudulent.
5. Read return and refund rules before paying
Sale, clearance, open-box, and refurbished products may have different return rules from regularly priced new products. Find the written policy for the exact listing and save it with your order records.
| Term | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Return deadline | How many days do you have, and does the period start at purchase, shipment, or delivery? |
| Condition for return | Can you open the box, sign in, or activate the tablet and still return it? Must all accessories and packaging be included? |
| Refund amount | Will the item price, original shipping, taxes, and any bundled charges be refunded? |
| Return shipping | Who pays the label or postage, and must you use a particular carrier? |
| Restocking or other fees | Is a percentage or fixed fee deducted, and are sale or clearance items excluded entirely? |
| Problem resolution | Does the seller or marketplace handle a damaged, incorrect, counterfeit, or non-delivered order? |
Do not assume that a familiar retailer’s normal policy applies during a special sale. If the listing says “final sale,” “non-returnable,” or uses an unclear condition label, decide whether you can accept that risk before paying.

Record the promised dispatch date, estimated delivery window, shipping method, and tracking expectations. A sale price is less useful if the tablet will arrive after the event or project for which you need it.
In the United States, the FTC says a seller must ship within the time it promised. When no shipping time was promised, the FTC’s online-shopping guidance describes a 30-day rule: the seller must ship within 30 days after receiving the buyer’s required order and payment information or permission to charge. This is a shipping requirement, not a promise that the package will be delivered within 30 days, and it does not establish delivery times for every country or transaction. See the FTC explanation for the applicable process when a seller cannot ship on time.
Keep the original delivery promise. If a delay occurs, use the seller or marketplace procedure stated in the order terms and retain all messages.

7. Understand the warranty before adding protection
Find the written manufacturer or seller warranty before checkout. A warranty is different from a return policy: a return addresses whether you can send the item back, while a warranty describes remedies for covered defects during a stated period.
| Warranty detail | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Duration | When does coverage begin, and how long does it last? |
| Covered failures | Which hardware or manufacturing problems qualify? |
| Exclusions | Are accidental damage, liquid, cosmetic wear, unauthorized repairs, commercial use, or battery degradation excluded? |
| Claim process | Who must you contact, what proof is required, and is registration necessary? |
| Remedy | Will the provider repair, replace, refund, or choose another remedy? |
| Shipping and labor | Who pays to send the tablet in and return it, and are labor or diagnostic charges possible? |
| Geographic scope | Does coverage apply in your country and if you travel? |
Read the FTC warranty guidance and save the warranty document, receipt, and serial-number information. If a service contract is offered separately, compare its duration, exclusions, claim process, and remedies with the included warranty. It may duplicate coverage rather than add useful protection.
8. Choose a payment method with dispute protection
Prefer a payment method that gives you a documented transaction and a way to dispute an unauthorized or unresolved purchase, such as a credit card where available. When buying through a marketplace, keep payment inside the marketplace system so its protections and records can apply.
Be especially cautious if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. The FTC advises avoiding sellers who demand those methods. Do not move a marketplace conversation to a private channel merely because the seller promises a lower price.
Check that the checkout address is secure and that the payment recipient matches the seller you investigated. Never send a copy of identity documents or payment credentials through an unsolicited message.

10. Compare finalists with one decision table
When two or more tablets meet your requirements, compare them on the factors that determine your actual risk and cost.
| Comparison axis | Tablet A | Tablet B | What a “better” result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact model and configuration | Record the full identifier | Record the full identifier | The entries match your requirements and are genuinely comparable. |
| Total checkout cost | Include every fee and tax | Include every fee and tax | The lower total has no unwanted bundle or payment condition. |
| Seller and marketplace protection | Record seller and dispute route | Record seller and dispute route | You know who is responsible and how a problem is handled. |
| Condition and included items | New, used, open-box, or refurbished; list contents | New, used, open-box, or refurbished; list contents | The condition and accessories fit your tolerance and use. |
| Return terms | Deadline, fees, shipping, activation rules | Deadline, fees, shipping, activation rules | You have a practical way to return a disappointing or incorrect item. |
| Delivery promise | Dispatch and arrival window | Dispatch and arrival window | The timing meets your need and is written down. |
| Warranty coverage | Duration, exclusions, remedy, claim costs | Duration, exclusions, remedy, claim costs | The coverage is usable where you live. |
| Fit with intended use | Pass/fail against your requirements | Pass/fail against your requirements | The tablet performs the job you actually planned to do. |
Do not rank tablets by an unverified “best” operating system, storage size, screen size, performance score, or discount percentage. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner; those choices depend on your applications, budget, and requirements.
11. Follow this checkout sequence
- Write your intended uses and must-have features.
- Find the exact manufacturer, model number, size, color, connectivity, storage, condition, and included configuration.
- Compare the same configuration at more than one reputable seller.
- Identify the actual seller, fulfiller, marketplace protection, and contact route.
- Read recent feedback from more than one source and inspect the listing photos and description.
- Calculate the checkout total, including shipping, handling, taxes, fees, and any required bundle or payment condition.
- Read the sale-specific return, refund, delivery, and restocking terms.
- Review the written warranty and compare any separately sold service contract.
- Save the listing, terms, checkout total, and promised shipping date.
- Pay through a protected method and keep the confirmation.
12. Stop and investigate these warning signs
- The model number or configuration is missing, inconsistent, or different across the title, description, and checkout page.
- The seller will not provide contact information or answers only through an off-platform channel.
- The photos appear generic while the condition description is vague.
- The price is dramatically below comparable listings with no credible explanation.
- The listing hides return restrictions, final-sale language, restocking charges, or who pays return shipping.
- The promised delivery date is absent or changes during checkout.
- The warranty is unavailable, applies only to another region, or excludes the problems most likely to matter for a used device.
- The seller demands a gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or payment-app transfer outside the marketplace.
Any one warning sign deserves clarification. Several together justify leaving the listing rather than trying to make the discount work.
13. Check the tablet immediately after delivery
Compare the delivered package with the saved listing before the return deadline expires. Confirm the model number, condition, color, storage, connectivity, accessories, and visible damage. Keep packaging and shipping labels until you are satisfied with the tablet and its return window.
If the item is wrong, damaged, materially different from the description, or missing promised contents, photograph the package and tablet, document the discrepancy, and contact the responsible seller or marketplace through the stated process. Keep every response and do not surrender the device or proof of shipment without a record.
14. If you are buying outside the United States
The FTC guidance cited here is U.S.-oriented. Other countries may use different delivery rules, cooling-off periods, warranty obligations, tax treatment, and marketplace protections. Check the law that applies to your address and the seller’s written terms, especially for cross-border purchases. Confirm who pays import charges, how returns cross borders, where warranty service is performed, and whether the seller is authorized to sell that regional configuration.
