Short answer: Check every game you expect to play, choose 512GB or 2TB based on the size of your installed library, treat a UHS-I class 3 or better microSD card as the documented expansion route, and verify that the machine’s display, network, USB and controller connections match your setup. Steam Machine runs SteamOS, so compatibility is game-specific rather than an automatic guarantee for every Steam title.
Valve says specifications may change before availability. Confirm the final configuration and regional price on the official Steam Machine product page before ordering.

What Steam Machine is and what Valve actually specifies
Steam Machine is a compact gaming PC built around SteamOS. Valve describes it as running its gaming-first operating system, with a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor, AMD RDNA 3 graphics and two internal storage configurations. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements, and Valve marks them as subject to change before availability.
Recommended Free Tools
| Component | Valve-listed specification | What it means when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores/12 threads | The two storage configurations use the same listed processor, so the capacity choice is not presented as a CPU upgrade. |
| GPU | AMD RDNA 3 graphics, 28 compute units | Use the requirements and compatibility information for your own games rather than assuming a universal performance level. |
| System memory | 16GB DDR5 | Shared system resources are fixed in the published configurations. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB GDDR6 VRAM | Valve lists this separately from system memory; it is not an additional storage pool. |
| Internal drive | 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD | Capacity is the principal difference between the two listed configurations. |
| Operating system | SteamOS | Windows games may use Proton, and compatibility must be checked title by title. |
Do not treat those specifications as a benchmark. No independent frame-rate, noise, power or loading tests are established here. For a purchase decision, the decisive questions are whether your particular games work as expected, how much space you need installed simultaneously, and whether the ports fit your room.

Check the games you actually intend to play
Why a Steam library is not an automatic compatibility guarantee
Steam Machine uses SteamOS, a Linux-based platform. Proton provides a way to run many Windows games on Linux-based Steam hardware, but the existence of a Windows version on Steam does not by itself promise a flawless Steam Machine experience. Valve’s developer guidance recommends that studios target Steam Deck compatibility as the best way to help their games work on Steam Machine. The Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review provides device-specific context, while the Steam Machine documentation explains the developer target.
Use those labels and reviews as evidence for each title, not as a blanket approval for your whole library. A game can be marked differently from another game in the same franchise, and the result can change when a developer updates a game or its launcher.
A practical pre-purchase compatibility check
- Make a target list. Write down the games you will play in the first month, the games you want installed permanently, and any less-common titles that would determine whether you buy the machine.
- Look up each title’s compatibility information. Use Steam’s game page and the device-specific compatibility review. Pay attention to the actual notes, not only a badge: input, text legibility, launcher behavior and other details can matter in addition to whether a game starts.
- Separate essential games from optional games. If one unverified title is essential, investigate that title independently and avoid treating the rest of your library as evidence that it will work.
- Check the intended display target. A title that is satisfactory at the system’s default 1080p gaming resolution may require different settings at a higher output resolution. Compatibility and performance are separate decisions.
- Recheck before paying. Valve’s pages and a game’s compatibility status can change. Review the current entries immediately before purchase and again after a major game or SteamOS update.
What Proton does and does not tell you
Proton is the compatibility layer used to run Windows games on Linux-based Steam hardware. It is an important reason a large Windows library can be usable, but it is not a promise that every title, launcher or feature behaves identically to Windows. The relevant question is always “How does this game work on this device now?” rather than “Is this game sold on Steam?”
Streaming as a separate use case
Valve positions Steam Machine as a host for Steam and Steam Link devices as well as a local gaming computer. That can be useful if you plan to play on another supported screen, but it does not remove the need to check the games you want to run on the machine itself. Streaming also depends on your home network and the client device, so do not use it to excuse a compatibility problem with a game you intend to run locally.

Choose 512GB or 2TB by planning your installed library
What the two internal configurations share
Valve lists the same CPU and GPU specifications for both capacities. The documented distinction is internal NVMe space: 512GB or 2TB. There is no published evidence here of a different graphics or processor performance tier. Select the larger drive for capacity, not because it is advertised as a faster gaming model.
| Configuration | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 512GB NVMe SSD | A focused library, frequent uninstalling, or a buyer who expects to add a microSD card. | Modern games can consume a large share of the drive, leaving less room for several large installs, updates and free-space headroom. |
| 2TB NVMe SSD | A large installed library, several large games kept ready, or minimal dependence on removable storage. | Higher purchase cost in your region; the listed CPU and GPU are the same as in the 512GB configuration. |
A simple capacity calculation
- List the games you want installed at the same time, including expansions and optional high-resolution assets where applicable.
- Add the space you need for SteamOS, shader caches, updates, screenshots and other files. Keep a reserve rather than planning to fill the drive to its last gigabyte.
- Compare that total with the usable space shown by SteamOS, not the advertised decimal capacity printed on the box.
- Choose 2TB if the 512GB plan depends on constant uninstalling or if a full library is important to you. Choose 512GB when your active list is small and you are comfortable managing installs or using documented microSD expansion.
Game sizes and update requirements change, so a capacity decision based on today’s list should include room for future patches. Internal capacity also affects convenience: moving a game between drives takes time even when the machine can technically hold it on removable storage.
Using a microSD card
Valve documents microSD expansion and specifies a UHS-I card rated Class 3 or better. Before the card can hold a Steam library, format it through the Steam Machine storage settings. A card previously used for Steam Deck library storage should work without additional steps, according to Valve’s support guidance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Insert a UHS-I Class 3 or better microSD card.
- Open the Steam Machine storage settings and select the card.
- Choose the format option and confirm the warning. Formatting erases existing data, so copy anything you need first.
- After formatting, select the card as an install location when Steam offers a library choice.
- Keep the card inserted while games installed there are in use; removing it makes those installations unavailable until it is reinserted.
Valve specifies UHS-I support; it does not promise that buying a UHS-II or UHS-III card will produce higher Steam Machine transfer rates. Pay for the documented class and reliable capacity rather than an unverified speed advantage.

Understand the limits of internal upgrades
What is documented
Valve documents microSD expansion, but the available support material does not provide a complete end-user procedure for replacing the internal NVMe SSD or confirm compatibility requirements for replacement modules. That means an internal drive swap should not be treated as a supported, guaranteed upgrade path when comparing the 512GB and 2TB models.
Why opening the case carries risk
Valve warns that it is not responsible for replacing or servicing screws or other components damaged while the Steam Machine is opened or modified. A buyer who opens the enclosure can also create warranty or service complications that are not addressed by the published guidance. Unless Valve publishes a clear procedure and approved requirements for your region and model, make the capacity decision at purchase and use microSD for the expansion Valve explicitly documents.
How to make the upgrade decision
- Choose 2TB now if your library plan requires substantial internal space.
- Choose 512GB when the active library is modest and removable storage is acceptable.
- Do not buy the smaller model solely on the assumption that an internal SSD replacement will be simple or officially supported.
Separate display-output capability from gaming performance
Valve lists HDMI and DisplayPort output modes up to 4K or higher depending on the connection. That describes what the machine can send to a display; it does not promise that every game will render at that resolution with your preferred settings. Valve’s support guide identifies 1080p as the default gaming resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Connector match: Your display must accept HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 through the cable and adapter arrangement you plan to use.
- Target resolution: Decide whether you will normally play at 1080p or ask individual games to render higher.
- Performance expectation: Use the game’s compatibility information and your chosen settings; an output ceiling is not an FPS guarantee.
If 4K output is important for menus, video or selected games, confirm the exact mode supported by the final hardware and your display. If consistent gaming performance matters more than desktop sharpness, plan around 1080p because that is Valve’s stated default and Verified-test resolution.
Inventory every connection before you buy
Physical ports
| Connection | Valve-listed hardware | Check before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Video | HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 | Choose the output that your TV or monitor accepts and account for the cable length and any adapter. |
| Wired network | Gigabit Ethernet | Use it if your room has a network cable and you want a direct connection. |
| Front USB | USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports | Useful for controllers, storage and other devices that need convenient access. |
| Rear USB-A | USB-A 2.0 ports | Suitable for slower or permanently connected accessories; check the device’s own requirements. |
| Rear USB-C | USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 | Check whether your accessory needs USB-C data, a particular cable or another power arrangement. |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 | Confirm that your router, headphones and other wireless accessories use a compatible band or profile. |
The number and placement of ports matter more than a generic “PC-compatible” label. Draw a quick layout of the machine, display, network cable, controller receiver, keyboard, mouse and external drives. If several devices must remain connected, reserve the rear ports for permanent accessories and the front ports for occasional use.
When a USB hub helps—and when it does not
A hub is conditional, not a required purchase. The machine already has front USB-A, rear USB-A and rear USB-C connections. If you use a hub, check its data and power specifications against the devices attached to it. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance says to try a different USB port and to connect a device directly when diagnosing USB problems. Direct connection should therefore be your first test before blaming the machine or adding another hub.

Steam Controller pairing
Valve says Steam Machine has its wireless adapter built in, so a Steam Controller pairs directly without the separate puck. That is the simplest route for couch play: pair the controller through SteamOS rather than assuming a receiver must occupy a USB port. The Steam Controller product page contains the controller-specific pairing and feature information.

Desktop Mode input
Desktop Mode can be navigated with a keyboard and mouse or with the Steam Controller, according to Valve’s support guide. A keyboard and mouse are therefore useful for setup, file management and desktop applications, but they are not a mandatory gaming purchase if your normal use is controller-based.
Audio and other accessories
List every accessory that will be connected at the same time: controller, keyboard, mouse, headset, webcam, external storage and network equipment. Then match each device to Bluetooth, USB-A, USB-C, HDMI audio or DisplayPort audio as appropriate. If a device requires a proprietary receiver, leave a physical USB port available and test it directly before introducing a hub.
A buying workflow that avoids expensive surprises
- Define the use case. Decide whether Steam Machine will be a primary local gaming PC, a living-room SteamOS box, a streaming host, or a mixture of those roles.
- Write the essential-game list. Check each title’s current Steam and device-specific compatibility information. Do not let a broad library count substitute for checking the games that matter most.
- Set the display target. Record the TV or monitor input, cable route and preferred gaming resolution. Treat 1080p as the documented default for gaming and Verified testing.
- Calculate internal capacity. Add the simultaneous installs and a reasonable reserve, then choose 512GB or 2TB. Consider a UHS-I Class 3 or better microSD card only as the documented removable expansion option.
- Map the connections. Account for HDMI or DisplayPort, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, Bluetooth devices and every USB accessory. Reserve direct USB access for anything that may need troubleshooting.
- Decide how you will use Desktop Mode. If you expect regular desktop navigation, have a keyboard and mouse available; if not, a Steam Controller can provide navigation.
- Recheck the final listing. Valve’s product page says specifications may change before availability. Confirm the final storage option, ports, wireless features and price in your region immediately before ordering.
Common buying mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming every Steam game is supported | SteamOS compatibility is software-dependent, and Proton does not make every Windows title identical to its Windows version. | Check the individual games and their device-specific compatibility notes before buying. |
| Choosing 512GB without a library plan | Several large installs, updates and free-space needs can make the drive feel full quickly. | Calculate simultaneous installs first, then choose 2TB or plan documented microSD use. |
| Buying a card and skipping the format step | The card must be formatted through Steam Machine storage settings for use as a library location. | Back up its contents, format it in SteamOS and then create or select the library location. |
| Equating 4K output with 4K gaming performance | Output modes and rendering performance are different limits. | Plan around 1080p for the documented default and assess higher resolutions per game. |
| Expecting an internal SSD swap to be routine | Valve does not publish a complete replacement procedure or compatibility guarantee in the cited support material. | Buy the capacity you need and treat microSD as the verified expansion route. |
| Adding a hub before diagnosing USB problems | A hub can add another point of failure and obscure a port, cable or device issue. | Try another port and connect the device directly, following Valve’s troubleshooting advice. |
| Carrying a Steam Controller puck to the living room | The machine’s wireless adapter is built in. | Use the direct pairing path and keep the USB port available for another accessory. |
What is still uncertain before availability
Valve’s product page is the authority for the shipping configuration, but it explicitly warns that specifications may change before availability. The material cited here does not establish a stable regional price, an independent performance benchmark, or an end-user internal SSD replacement procedure. Those are reasons to verify the final listing rather than reasons to infer a specification.
For the most current information, check the Steam Machine product page, the Steam Machine Feature & Troubleshooting guide, and the developer compatibility pages immediately before purchase.
