Do not judge a sports game’s purchase model from its cover price or age rating alone. Before buying, identify the exact edition, platform and region; read the rating’s feature notices; map every paid extra; verify whether desired modes need internet access, a subscription or a publisher account; and set spending and communication controls on every account that can launch the game. A game can be enjoyable without spending, while another can put competitive progress, online access or desirable players behind recurring or randomized purchases. The checks below let you tell the difference before money is committed.
Start with the rating, but read feature notices separately
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating answers an age-suitability question. Its rating category and content descriptors identify the kinds of content that contributed to the rating. They do not tell you whether the game is good value, whether a child will ask for purchases, or whether its online economy is fair.

Open the game’s entry in the ESRB Ratings Guide and look below the category and content descriptors for Interactive Elements. ESRB explains: “Interactive Elements highlight interactive or online features that may be of interest or concern but do not influence the rating assignment of a product.” Treat those notices as a checklist of features to investigate, not as a second age rating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLook for the two purchase notices
- In-Game Purchases means the game offers paid digital items or services. It does not, by itself, say whether they are cosmetic, required for progress, recurring or random.
- In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items) means a purchase can provide an item chosen at random, so the buyer may not know the specific digital item before paying.
ESRB introduced the general In-Game Purchases notice in 2018 and the random-items version in February 2020. A title rated before those dates can have paid extras without displaying the newer wording. An old or missing notice is therefore a reason to check the current platform listing and the publisher’s support pages, not evidence that the game has no monetization.

Map what each purchase buys
“In-game purchases” covers several different systems. Write down the actual transaction path—from real currency to the item you want—rather than relying on a store badge. ESRB’s parent guidance identifies these common forms:
| Purchase form | What it may provide | Questions to answer before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual currency | A balance exchanged for digital items, packs or services | Can the currency be earned in normal play? Is it sold in fixed bundles that leave unused balance? Can a child spend it without entering a password? |
| Gameplay advantages | Faster progression, stronger equipment, boosts or other competitive benefits | Does paying shorten a grind or create an advantage in the modes you care about? Is there a non-paying route that takes a reasonable amount of time? |
| Cosmetic items | Kits, celebrations, stadium effects, clothing, badges or other appearance changes | Do cosmetics stay separate from ratings, attributes and matchmaking? Are they direct purchases or obtained through random packs? |
| Expansions and season passes | Additional modes, content drops, challenges or time-limited rewards | Is the pass a one-time purchase or renewed each season? What happens to unclaimed rewards when a season ends? Does the base game still contain the modes you want? |
| Playable characters or teams | New athletes, squads or other usable content | Are they sold directly, unlocked through play, or available only through a chance-based pack? Can you use them in offline modes? |
| Randomized packs | A bundle whose contents are selected after purchase | Are drop rates shown? Do they describe a tier only, or the chance of each specific item? Can packs be earned without paying? |
Use the game’s help pages and the platform’s current listing to confirm the answer for the edition you intend to purchase. Features and currencies can differ between console generations, a standard and deluxe edition, and one country’s storefront and another’s.
A concrete listing example
The UK Xbox listing for EA SPORTS FC 26 says optional virtual currency can acquire virtual items, including a random selection, and lists purchasable FC Points. It also advertises online multiplayer and cross-platform multiplayer. That is evidence about that title, edition and regional listing—not a rule for every sports game. Read your own storefront’s wording before assuming that the same currency, pack or multiplayer feature exists on your platform.

When a game sells packs or other random items, find the probability disclosure before purchasing. ESRB’s parent guidance notes that platform policies require publishers to disclose loot-box drop rates. A disclosure might say that a pack has a certain probability of producing a “rare” tier. That does not necessarily tell you the probability of receiving the particular striker, card, shoe or cosmetic you want. A rare tier can contain many different items, each with a much smaller individual chance.

Read the unit of probability
- Tier odds: the chance that a result belongs to a category such as common, rare or elite.
- Item odds: the chance of a named item or a defined pool member.
- Eligibility rules: whether duplicate protection, pity mechanics, expiration dates or account-level limits change the result.
Record which of these the disclosure actually supplies. Do not convert a tier percentage into a promise that you will receive a desired item. Also check whether the pack is bought with real money, with currency that itself must be bought, or with currency earned through matches and challenges. A pack that can be earned does not automatically make its odds attractive, but it changes the spending decision.
Randomized digital items are not automatically the same thing as real-money gambling. Describe the mechanic precisely, then consider the rating notices, platform rules and laws that apply where you live. If the game targets a child, the practical question is whether the account can block the transaction and whether the child can understand that a purchase may produce an unwanted duplicate or low-value item.
Calculate the cost beyond the base game
Make a small cost sheet before checkout. Put the one-time game price on one line, then list every payment that might recur or become likely during normal play. The goal is not to predict a player’s personal spending; it is to expose commitments the headline price does not show.
| Cost line | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Base edition | Which console or PC version is included, and whether a different edition is needed for the desired modes or upgrade path. |
| Online access | Whether the platform requires a separate multiplayer subscription for the mode you want, and whether that requirement varies by platform or region. |
| Currency bundles | The smallest and largest bundles, bundle pricing, leftover balances and whether currency is shared across platforms. |
| Season or battle pass | Price, season length, renewal behavior, included items and whether progress or rewards expire. |
| Direct item purchases | Whether the store sells the item you want directly or only sells a chance to obtain it. |
| Expansion content | Which modes, leagues or players are outside the base edition and whether an expansion is required for friends’ sessions. |
Then ask what happens if you spend nothing after purchase. Can you enter the modes you bought the game for, field a competitive team, and earn meaningful rewards through matches? A pass or currency system may be optional in a technical sense but still central to the game’s progression loop. Read player-facing mode descriptions and the publisher’s support documentation for that distinction.

Decide whether paying changes competition or only appearance
Two games can charge similar amounts while creating very different experiences. Separate visual customization from systems that alter results. Cosmetics generally change presentation; boosts, stronger attributes, faster access to high-rated players or additional attempts can affect progression and competitive matchmaking.
Questions for competitive modes
- Can a new player reach the same attributes, roster strength or equipment through regular play?
- How much time does the non-paying route require, and are important rewards tied to a short season?
- Are paid advantages usable in ranked or head-to-head modes, or confined to a separate mode?
- Do matchmaking rules account for team strength, and can a purchased item bypass that balance?
Do not assume that “optional” means “irrelevant.” An item can be optional for entry yet influential once inside a mode. Conversely, a game may sell many cosmetics while leaving competitive statistics unchanged. Your decision should follow the modes you and your family actually intend to play, not the number of items shown in a store carousel.
Verify online, account and communication requirements
Check each desired mode separately. A game may run an exhibition match offline while requiring an internet connection for career synchronization, Ultimate-Team-style rosters, events, cloud saves or purchases. Look for requirements for a platform account, a publisher account, an online subscription and a persistent connection. Confirm whether a guest profile can play, whether a child account can sign in, and whether progress is tied to one account.

Online features also create privacy and moderation questions. ESRB’s Users Interact notice warns that players may encounter user-generated content or communicate with others; it is not a guarantee that every mode includes voice or text chat. Identify which modes expose a child to strangers, whether voice and text can be disabled independently, and whether user-created logos, names or messages appear in shared spaces.

For a current example, the UK Xbox listing for EA SPORTS FC 26 advertises online multiplayer and cross-platform multiplayer. Cross-play can broaden the pool of opponents, but it can also mean that friends’ platforms, communication settings and parental controls differ. Verify the exact cross-play scope and opt-out controls in the edition you are buying.
Account settings can govern more than multiplayer. Support documentation for NBA 2K27 says account controls may cover online multiplayer, store access, user-generated content, voice chat and text chat. Those controls depend on the title, platform, account type and region, so use the service’s current instructions rather than copying a setting path from another game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set spending and safety controls before handing over the device
Configure controls before the game is installed on a child’s account. ESRB’s Parental Controls: Tools for Parents guidance describes controls that can block games by rating, limit or block purchases, set time limits and restrict online communication. It also recommends using a child account and entering the correct birth date. A correct date matters because age-based defaults and teen-account features rely on it.
Use every control layer
- Console or store account: require a password or passkey for purchases, disable stored payment methods where practical, and set a spending limit or approval workflow.
- Family-management settings: apply age, communication and play-time restrictions to the child’s profile rather than only to an adult account.
- Publisher account: review the game’s web account for purchase permissions, privacy, cross-play and linked-platform access.
- In-game controls: check separate toggles for store access, voice chat, text chat, user-generated content and friend requests.
- Payment review: make one test purchase only if necessary, confirm who receives the receipt, and remove saved payment details afterward if the device is shared.
Controls can be narrower than expected. NBA 2K27 support says guardians of child accounts can choose features or modes, and notes that UK teen accounts cannot change certain settings tied to MyTEAM packs or loot boxes. That limitation is specific to that service and region; use it as a prompt to check your own account’s age category and country rules, not as a universal behavior.

Confirm edition, platform and region before relying on a label
Store pages often group several products under one name. Check the platform, generation, edition, included bonuses, upgrade rights and release status. A notice visible on a current Xbox page may not appear on a PC or PlayStation listing. A deluxe edition can include currency or a pass that the standard edition omits, while a cross-generation bundle can contain two separate entitlements.
Region affects more than currency symbols. Store wording, age-rating bodies, payment rules, teen-account features, available packs and online-service terms can differ by country. Treat a US or UK listing as an example unless it is the storefront where you will buy. If the rating record is several years old, compare it with the current listing and the publisher’s live support page because monetization features can be added or renamed after the original rating.
Compare two sports games with the same worksheet
When choosing between titles, fill in the same fields for each one. This prevents a low base price from hiding a recurring pass or an online requirement.

| Comparison axis | Record for each game | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total first-year commitment | Base edition, required online subscription and any pass you consider necessary | Shows the practical cost of the intended experience rather than the box price. |
| Purchase type | Direct items, virtual currency, randomized packs, expansions and passes | Reveals whether you know what you are buying and whether spending can recur. |
| Effect on progression | Cosmetic only, faster progression, stronger competitive items or mixed | Predicts whether non-paying players face a disadvantage in your chosen modes. |
| Earn-with-play route | Items or currency available through matches, challenges or seasons | Shows whether spending is avoidable and what time trade-off replaces it. |
| Online and account gates | Internet, platform subscription, publisher account, cross-play and chat requirements | Prevents a purchase that cannot be used on the intended account or connection. |
| Family controls | Purchase approval, spending limits, ratings, time, voice, text and user-content controls | Determines whether a child can play safely within your household rules. |
A pre-purchase checklist you can use in five minutes
- Open the exact storefront page for your platform, edition and country.
- Record the age category, content descriptors, In-Game Purchases notice and any Random Items notice.
- Open the publisher’s monetization or help page and list currency, packs, passes, expansions, playable content and cosmetics.
- Find the random-item odds disclosure, noting whether it gives tier probabilities or individual-item odds.
- Check whether the desired modes work offline and whether online play needs a subscription, persistent internet or a publisher account.
- Read communication and user-content descriptions; identify voice, text, friend-request and cross-play controls.
- Ask what a player can earn without paying and whether competitive attributes or roster strength can be bought.
- Add the base price, possible pass, online subscription and any likely currency purchase to your cost sheet.
- Create or select the correct child account, verify its birth date and set purchase approval before installing.
- Recheck the publisher account and in-game menus after the first launch, because a console-level block may not disable every service-level feature.
What to do when information is missing
If a listing says only “in-game purchases,” do not infer that all items are cosmetic or that packs are absent. Search the game’s official support pages for “virtual currency,” “odds,” “packs,” “season pass,” “online requirements” and “parental controls.” If the page still does not explain a material feature, treat that uncertainty as part of the buying decision and wait for a clear disclosure or choose a title whose terms you can verify.
If your child cannot access a desired mode after restrictions are enabled, check the account age category, the platform subscription, the publisher-account link and the game’s own communication or store toggles in that order. Do not solve an access problem by moving the child to an adult account: that can remove the very spending and privacy controls you intended to keep. If a purchase was made accidentally, stop further transactions, preserve the receipt and use the platform’s current refund and family-account process; eligibility and deadlines vary by storefront and region.
The safest buying decision is specific: a named edition on a named platform, used by a named account, in a named region, with a documented cost and control plan. Ratings identify age suitability; feature notices reveal that purchases or interaction exist; the remaining questions—what is sold, how random it is, what it costs and who can access it—must be answered from the current listing and account settings before checkout.
