A “Soulslike” label does not guarantee common standards for performance, co-op, cross-generation saves, difficulty options, or assist features.
A six-point pre-purchase check
Use this order when evaluating any candidate game:
- Platform fit: Confirm the exact Windows version, console model, and storefront edition you intend to buy.
- PC hardware: Compare CPU, GPU and video-memory, RAM, graphics API, and free storage with the title’s minimum and recommended specifications.
- Console generation and saves: Check whether the purchase runs on the console you own and whether saves move between generations.
- Edition contents: Read the included-content list to distinguish a base game from an expansion, upgrade, or bundle.
- Play modes: Verify whether the game is single-player only, supports online co-op, includes PvP, or requires any online service.
- Recourse and usability: Review refund terms, controller support, input options, and accessibility settings for the specific title and region.
Store pages and support documentation can change. Recheck them immediately before purchase, particularly after a console-generation update, major expansion, or regional storefront change.

Check PC requirements against your actual machine
Use the requirements for the exact game and storefront
There is no genre-wide “Soulslike PC requirement.” Each developer chooses its own engine, rendering features, texture sizes, and operating-system support. Open the game’s page on the store where you will buy it and record every listed requirement. At minimum, compare:

Do not compare only the brand name of a component. A laptop GPU with a familiar model number can perform differently from a desktop version, and an integrated GPU may share system memory instead of providing dedicated video memory. Check your exact model in Windows’ System Information, Task Manager, or the manufacturer’s specification page before deciding.

Example: Elden Ring’s Steam specifications
Valve’s current Steam support listing for Elden Ring, accessed in 2026, gives a concrete example of how requirements are presented. These figures apply to that Windows release; they are not a minimum standard for every Soulslike.

The minimum line means the game is designed to start on a system around those specifications under the publisher’s stated assumptions. It does not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, loading time, or immunity from stutter. Recommended hardware is also not a guarantee of a locked frame rate; patches, drivers, background applications, and the chosen resolution affect results.
Interpret the gap between minimum and recommended
If your PC is near minimum, plan to lower resolution, texture quality, shadows, effects, and other demanding settings. Keep extra storage beyond the listed capacity for patches, shader caches, save backups, and the operating system. A drive with only the exact advertised free space can become full during an update and prevent installation.
If your CPU meets the minimum but your GPU does not, lowering visual settings may not solve the problem. Conversely, a strong GPU cannot compensate for insufficient RAM or an older processor that causes frame-time spikes. Check all categories rather than treating the GPU row as the only meaningful number.
Also confirm that your operating system can run the required graphics API and that your driver supports it. A game that lists DirectX 12 may still fail to launch on hardware with incomplete feature support even when the model name appears close to the minimum. Install current graphics drivers and close unnecessary background software before judging performance.
Storage is a practical requirement, not a footnote
Steam lists 60 GB of available storage for Elden Ring. The Steam listing for Lies of P lists 50 GB. Those are installation-space figures for the cited PC releases, not universal Soulslike values. Leave headroom for updates and temporary installation files, and check whether your target drive is an SSD if the store or developer recommends one. Installing on a nearly full or very slow drive can create problems that a faster graphics card will not fix.

Confirm console support and save behavior separately
Supported hardware does not automatically mean shared saves
A product page can sell one purchase for multiple generations while treating each generation’s save data differently. Read both the platform list and the save-compatibility statement. Do not infer cross-generation saves from a shared product page, cross-generation logo, or cloud-sync icon.

Lies of P’s official support documentation illustrates why the two checks must remain separate: its PlayStation purchase supports both PS4 and PS5, but saved data cannot be transferred between those systems. On Xbox, the same purchase supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with saves syncing across Xbox platforms. Treat this as a title-specific rule, not a promise for other games.
Questions to answer before buying on console
- Does the product include the older and newer console versions, or only one version?
- Is an upgrade fee required when moving to a newer console?
- Will your save transfer in the direction you need, such as PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Series X|S?
- Does cloud storage require an active subscription or a particular account?
- Are multiplayer features available on the console generation you own?
If you are changing consoles soon, make a manual save-transfer plan before buying. A game that runs on both machines may still require you to finish on the original console or start over on the new one.
Read exactly what each edition includes
Base game, expansion, and bundle names are not interchangeable
Publishers often present several tiles for one game: standard, deluxe, launch, complete, or an expansion bundle. Read the included-content paragraph rather than relying on the edition name. An expansion bundle name does not necessarily mean the base game is included.
Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring product information lists PC, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox One/Series X|S versions and presents both base-game and Shadow of the Erdtree edition choices. Before checking out, identify whether the item contains:
- The base game only
- The expansion only, which may require an existing base game
- The base game plus the expansion
- Cosmetic or soundtrack extras that do not add playable content
- A platform-specific upgrade or entitlement
Write down the exact edition name and platform shown in your cart. If you already own the base game, compare the expansion-only option with a bundle; if you do not own it, confirm that the bundle explicitly says the base game is included.

Expansion ownership can affect installation and access
An expansion may download separately, require the base game, or unlock content through an entitlement tied to the purchasing account. Check account and region compatibility when buying a disc, code, or digital add-on. A disc from one region and downloadable content from another can have compatibility restrictions, depending on the platform.
Verify whether the game supports your preferred way to play
Single-player, co-op, and PvP are different features
Do not assume that a challenging action RPG supports summons, online co-op, invasions, or competitive modes simply because other Soulslikes do. Steam’s Elden Ring listing includes online co-op and PvP. Official support information for Lies of P describes it as single-player with no multiplayer functions.
Check the store’s named features and the support page for answers to these practical questions:
- Can another player join the entire campaign or only selected encounters?
- Is co-op available from the beginning, or unlocked after a tutorial or boss?
- Does PvP require an opt-in item, a separate mode, or an online subscription on console?
- Are matchmaking and voice features platform-specific?
- Can players on different console generations or PC and console play together?
When a listing says only “online features,” find the detailed mode description before purchasing. A single-player game can still have online patches or leaderboards without offering cooperative play.
Check controls and accessibility for the exact game
Accessibility varies considerably between titles. The available evidence does not establish a reliable, genre-wide comparison of difficulty settings or assist features, so do not assume that one Soulslike’s options carry over to another.

Understand refund options before you launch
Steam’s standard conditions
Valve’s Steam Support refund instructions state that a title can normally be requested for a refund within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of play time. A request outside those conditions can still be submitted for review, but approval is not guaranteed. This is Steam’s policy, not a universal rule for console stores.
Because play time can accumulate quickly while troubleshooting, start the refund request as soon as a serious compatibility problem appears. Keep the purchase receipt and note the hardware, operating system, error message, and troubleshooting steps you tried.
- Open Steam Support while signed in to the purchasing account.
- Select the relevant purchase from your help history.
- Choose the refund option and provide the requested reason.
- Submit the request before the 14-day or two-hour limits expire whenever possible.
- Save the confirmation email and monitor the payment method for the result.
Console stores and regional consumer laws can use different deadlines, play-time rules, and exceptions. Check the store attached to your account and your country’s consumer-rights information rather than applying Steam’s conditions to a console purchase.

Common purchase mistakes and how to avoid them
“It is a Soulslike, so my PC should run it.”
Genre labels describe design influences, not technical requirements. Use the title’s own storefront specifications and compare every component.
“The minimum requirements guarantee smooth performance.”
