Before paying, make sure the offer is for the exact phone you want, compare its full delivered price with equivalent listings, verify who is selling it, and read the return and warranty terms. Then confirm the precise model works with your carrier and save the listing and checkout records. These checks matter especially for imported, used, and refurbished phones, where variant, network, condition, or seller differences can turn an apparent bargain into the wrong purchase.
1. Is it the exact phone and configuration you want?
Start with the product details, not the headline or product photo. Record the manufacturer, full model number, storage capacity, color if it matters to you, and regional variant. Also note whether the listing describes the phone as new, refurbished, open-box, or used. A discount is not a like-for-like comparison if it applies to a lower-storage model, a different regional version, or a device in a different condition.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends noting a product’s manufacturer or model number and details when comparison shopping. Use those identifiers to compare the same configuration with trustworthy sellers, rather than relying on a similar-looking listing: FTC online shopping guidance.
2. Is the sale price a real deal?
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not only the advertised price. Add delivery, shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees shown at checkout. Check whether the price depends on a bundle, subscription, trade-in, or other condition, and whether the offer is available to you.

- Compare the same model number, storage, regional variant, and condition.
- Check the final checkout total, including delivery and fees.
- Read the conditions attached to bundles, subscriptions, or other advertised-price requirements.
- Look for price-match terms or a price-adjustment policy if the price drops after you buy.
Prioritize features you actually need instead of paying extra for specifications that do not improve your use of the phone. Keep a copy of the listing and checkout total so you can compare what was promised with what you paid.
3. Who is selling the phone, and what protection applies?
A marketplace may host a listing without being the seller. Find the seller’s legal or business name, contact details, and location, then check recent reviews across more than one source. Do not treat a high star rating as proof: the FTC warns that online reviews can be fake or misleading. Read the marketplace’s refund and dispute rules, and confirm that they cover this item and this seller.
Keep communication and payment within the marketplace where possible, so its dispute process can apply. Choose a payment method with a route to dispute an unauthorized or unresolved charge. Avoid sellers who insist on gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. The FTC’s online shopping advice explains safer payment and record-keeping practices.

4. Can you return a phone bought on sale?
Read the return terms for this specific listing before paying; sale or clearance items may have different conditions. Find the return deadline, which reasons qualify, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies. Save the policy and any seller messages, and note the date by which you would need to act.
Return rights vary by jurisdiction, seller type, and transaction. For example, European Commission guidance describes a 14-day withdrawal period for many online purchases and a minimum two-year legal guarantee for goods, with at least one year for second-hand goods bought from a professional seller, under EU rules. These are regional rules, not worldwide terms; check the rules that apply where you live and buy. See the European Commission’s consumer rights and guarantees guidance.
5. What does the warranty cover, and who will honor it?
Check the manufacturer’s warranty terms for the exact model and country, including what is covered, how long coverage lasts, and where you can obtain service. Do not assume a phone sold by an overseas seller has local manufacturer service or that a marketplace’s return policy is the same as a warranty. Your statutory rights can also depend on your location and whether the seller is a business or a private individual.

As regional examples, NSW guidance cautions that buying from overseas businesses or private sellers can leave Australian buyers with limited Australian Consumer Law protection. EU consumer guidance describes guarantees under EU rules. Neither example establishes the rights that apply in every country. See NSW online shopping guidance and the European Commission guidance.

6. Will the phone work with your carrier?
Check the exact model variant—not just the product family—against your carrier’s compatibility information. Confirm that its supported network bands and technology match the networks used where you will use it, and check coverage in your area. Also find out whether it is carrier-locked or subject to a contract or activation restriction. For an imported phone, check the relevant local device standards and certification requirements before ordering.
Requirements differ by country. Australia’s communications regulator warns that some inexpensive phones sold online, particularly from overseas, may not meet Australian standards or work on local networks; its advice is to check with the seller or manufacturer for an RCM before buying. In Brazil, Anatel advises buyers to verify certification and local-network compatibility, including restrictions connected to the original carrier when buying abroad. Consult the relevant guidance for your market: ACMA guidance on phones sold online or from overseas and Anatel’s Celular Legal guidance.

7. What extra checks apply to a used or refurbished phone?
Ask for photos of the actual device and a specific description of its condition. For a pre-owned iPhone, Apple’s UK guidance recommends checking physical damage, battery health, parts and service history, and how the seller inspected it. Check the maker’s own advice for other phone brands; iPhone-specific checks should not be assumed to apply identically to every device.
Do not buy an iPhone with Activation Lock still enabled. Apple says: “If you see iPhone Locked to Owner when you turn on or wake the iPhone and you’re with the seller, ask them to enter their password to turn off Activation Lock.” If an online purchase arrives locked to its previous owner, Apple advises returning it. See Apple’s UK guidance on buying a pre-owned iPhone.

Brazil: check the IMEI and certification
For a phone bought in Brazil, Anatel recommends checking that the IMEI shown on the phone matches the number on its box and checking whether the identifier is restricted because of theft, loss, or another irregularity. A dual-SIM phone may have more than one IMEI, so check each relevant identifier. Also verify Anatel certification. This is Brazil-specific guidance; an IMEI check is not a universal guarantee about a phone’s history or condition. Details are in Anatel’s Celular Legal guidance.

8. Will the phone keep receiving security updates?
Update support affects how long a phone can receive security fixes. NSW guidance lists security patches among the benefits of operating-system updates, and ACMA notes that updates help protect against security threats. Because support commitments vary by model and market, verify the current update policy with the manufacturer for the exact phone rather than assuming a support duration. See NSW guidance and ACMA guidance.
9. What should you save before and after checkout?
Keep records in a place you can access if delivery, condition, or a refund becomes disputed. Save the seller name and listing URL, the complete product description, the advertised offer and final total, the promised shipping date, the return terms, and messages with the seller. Keep the order confirmation and payment record too.
The FTC advises buyers to retain order and seller information. If the seller does not promise a shipping time, the FTC rule generally requires shipment within 30 days after the seller receives the order information or permission to charge; that U.S. rule is not a worldwide delivery deadline. See FTC online shopping guidance.
