Before paying, identify the exact release, compare its wrapping with known copies of that same version, inspect the box for opening or handling evidence, and verify any certification record. Seller statements and a convincing photograph reduce uncertainty but cannot prove authenticity. Independent authentication is optional and makes the most sense when the value or uncertainty justifies its cost.
Start by identifying the exact release
Do not judge a seal until you know what should be inside and how that particular release was packaged. Record the platform, region, publisher, edition, release period and any catalog or product code visible on the box. A console library can contain several packaging variants, and seal practices changed by publisher, factory and production period.

Build a release record
- Platform: Identify the exact system and, where relevant, the model or format used in that region.
- Region: North American, European, Japanese and other regional releases can use different boxes, labels, manuals and wrapping.
- Edition and revision: Player’s Choice, greatest-hits, bundle, launch, reprint and later budget editions may not share the same box or seal.
- Variant markings: Note hangtabs, barcode placement, rating symbols, publisher logos, color changes and product numbers.
- Expected contents: Establish which cartridge or disc, manual, inserts and accessories belong with that release.
PSA’s collecting guidance emphasizes that versions can differ in components and that a variant affects rarity, desirability and value. A box that looks right for one release may be wrong for another, so compare only with well-documented examples of the same version.

Look at the whole wrapping before zooming in on one suspicious wrinkle. Record where the main seam runs, how much the film overlaps, how folds meet at each corner, and whether the plastic is tight or loose. CGC describes several seal categories, including glued, H-Overlap, H-Seam, LRB and LRT. These labels describe examples in CGC’s system, not a universal key for every console, publisher or country.

Common patterns to recognize

Some games were sold without plastic wrapping. If documented examples of the same release are unsealed or use a different package, shrink wrap is not evidence of originality by itself. A seam that appears on the top, bottom and one side can be a common third-party reseal pattern, according to CGC, although CGC also cautions that some seals with that appearance may be original. Treat it as a warning to investigate, not an automatic verdict.
Compare against known copies
CGC Video Games states: “One way to authenticate an original seal is to compare the seal to other known copies of your game.” Use several clear references when possible. Compare film thickness and clarity, seam position, overlap width, corner folds, venting or perforation details, label placement and the way the plastic sits around the box. A single online photograph can reflect a different revision, camera angle or storage condition, so look for agreement across multiple examples of the identical release.
Look for evidence that the box was opened
An intact-looking outer film can conceal a previously opened box. Concentrate on the cardboard at every opening flap and on the ink printed across those edges. CGC calls a color break along the flaps strong evidence that the box was opened and used: the printed surface cracks or changes color where the flap was bent.

- Flap edges: Search for broken ink, whitening, fibers, fresh bends, flattened tabs or adhesive residue.
- All corners: Check for crushing, split cardboard, compression lines and film that has been stretched over damage.
- Edges and faces: Note tears, dents, scuffs, fading, water marks and uneven gloss.
- Film contact: Look for plastic that is too loose in one area, puckered around a repaired corner or unusually tight over a dent.
- Stickers and residue: Photograph price stickers, rental labels, tape marks and cleaned areas; their presence can explain damage or a prior opening.
- Bottom and top: These are often omitted from listings but can reveal a replacement seam or rewrapped flap.
Ask for straight, well-lit photographs of the complete front, back, top, bottom and every corner, plus close-ups of each seam and both flap areas. Reflections from plastic can hide defects, so request additional angles rather than relying on one heavily edited image.
Decide whether the seal is original, a reseal or simply uncertain
“Sealed” describes an appearance, not a guaranteed history. Manufacturers and distributors sometimes resealed items before retail sale. CGC distinguishes those situations from retail reseals of used or returned games, which it treats as non-authentic for its certification purposes. A third-party seam can therefore be suspicious without proving who applied it or when.

Weigh the evidence together
- Consistent construction: Seam geometry, folds and film behavior agree with several known copies of the same version.
- Opening evidence: Flaps show no convincing color breaks, abrasion or repair, and the box condition is compatible with an unopened item.
- Variant fit: Artwork, barcode, rating, product code and expected components belong together.
- History: The seller supplies a plausible purchase trail and storage history that you can corroborate.
- Contradictions: Any mismatch, unexplained damage or unusual seam lowers confidence even if the front photograph looks pristine.
No visual checklist can guarantee authenticity, and an authentic-looking seal does not prove that the original cartridge or disc remains inside. If evidence conflicts, classify the item as uncertain rather than forcing it into an “original” or “fake” category.
Confirm that the box, game and packaging belong together
Vintage games are assembled from multiple pieces, and parts can be swapped. Compare the box’s region, product code, title treatment, rating mark and publisher information with the cartridge or disc label and with the manual and inserts visible in reference examples. PSA’s guidance notes variants such as hangtab boxes and changes in components across releases. A complete-looking package can still combine pieces from different print runs.

Questions for a listing
- Does the seller identify the exact region and edition, rather than only naming the console?
- Are the barcode, product code and rating symbol visible and consistent?
- Do the box dimensions, cardboard color and print quality match the claimed variant?
- If the seller opened the box for photographs, is there a record of when and why?
- Are replacement manuals, repro labels or repaired corners disclosed?
Do not infer completeness from weight, rattling or a seller’s assurance. Without opening the package, you cannot independently confirm every internal component; state that limitation in your purchase decision.
Request provenance and transaction protections
Ask for the item’s purchase history, previous owners if known, storage conditions, and a direct answer about any prior opening, repair or resealing. Treat these statements as leads to verify, not as authentication. A long-held collection story can be useful context, but it is not a substitute for seam and box evidence.
Evidence to obtain before paying
- Request unedited, high-resolution photographs of all six faces, all corners, both flap areas and every seam.
- Ask for a photograph with a current date or transaction identifier if you need to establish that the images show the listed item.
- Ask the seller to disclose known repairs, replacements, storage in heat or humidity, and any previous opening.
- Obtain the written return terms, including the deadline, who pays return shipping and what happens if a reseal is found.
- Use payment and shipping protections appropriate to the transaction. The available guidance does not establish one universal marketplace policy, so read the terms for the specific service and seller.
Refusal to provide ordinary views, pressure to pay outside protected channels or evasive answers are reasons to walk away, not challenges to solve by guessing from a single image.

If the game is graded, verify the certification yourself
A certification number is a lookup route, not a reason to skip inspection. Use the grading company’s official certification page to confirm the title or description, platform, variant information and grades. Then compare that record with the physical item and the seller’s photographs: number, label, box, seal and holder should all correspond.
Interpret separate game and seal grades
PSA describes a numerical game grade and a letter seal grade. CGC also publishes distinct game and seal grading information. Those separate judgments matter because a clean box can have a poor or questionable seal, while an attractive seal can cover a box with substantial wear. Do not reduce the purchase to one headline number, and do not assume a high grade confirms the contents or makes any price reasonable.
What a rejection can mean
CGC identifies counterfeit, reseal and questionable-authenticity rejection outcomes. A rejection is an important warning, but acceptance by a service is not a promise of a future sale price or a guarantee that every internal component is original. Read the service’s current definitions and terms before sending an item.
When paid authentication or grading is worth considering
Third-party assessment is optional. It can be sensible when the purchase price is high, the variant is unusually scarce, the seller cannot provide a convincing history, or a professional opinion would materially change your decision. It is less compelling when the item is inexpensive, the cost would consume a large share of the purchase price, or you would not accept the service’s grading and return terms.

When two listings compete, score them on identical factors instead of allowing a dramatic photograph or a large grade number to dominate. The available guidance supports the effect of variant and condition differences but does not establish a dependable universal premium for sealed or graded games.

No reliable market-wide statistic establishes how many vintage games remain sealed, a typical sealed-game premium or an average resale return. Avoid investment claims unless you have title-specific, dated sales evidence. Buy the copy whose evidence and protections you can explain, not the one with the most confident description.
A practical buying workflow
- Write the release record. Note platform, region, edition, product code, known packaging variant and expected contents before contacting the seller.
- Collect reference images. Find several well-documented copies of that same release and map their seam locations, overlaps and corner folds.
- Request complete photographs. Obtain the six faces, all corners, flap edges and close-ups of every seam in unedited lighting.
- Check for opening evidence. Look for color breaks, abrasion, crushed cardboard, residue and film that does not conform to the box.
- Test the variant match. Compare artwork, barcode, rating, hangtab and product code with the claimed release and visible components.
- Ask the history questions. Get purchase, storage, repair and resealing information in writing, along with return terms.
- Verify certification. For a graded copy, use the issuer’s lookup and reconcile the record with the holder and item.
- Set a risk-adjusted limit. Include shipping, insurance, taxes, possible authentication fees and the cost of returning an item that fails inspection.
- Pause when evidence conflicts. Request clarification or decline; do not let scarcity or a seller’s deadline replace missing proof.

Treating shrink wrap as proof
Plastic can be applied after a box was opened, and some legitimate manufacturer or distributor reseals exist. Correct this by examining seam geometry, flap ink and the complete box history.

Relying on one front photograph
The most revealing evidence is often on the top, bottom, corners and flaps. Correct this by requesting the complete photo set and close-ups under neutral lighting.
Using a certification number as a substitute for inspection
A lookup confirms what the issuer recorded, not that the seller’s physical item is the same one or that the contents are original. Correct this by matching the number, description, holder and visible item.
Confusing condition with authenticity
A pristine box can contain a questionable seal, while an authentic seal can sit on a worn box. Correct this by considering game and seal condition separately.

Buying on a predicted premium
There is no universal sealed-game premium or average return established here. Correct this by basing the price on title-specific, dated evidence and on the risk you are willing to accept.
Protect the item after inspection
A box protector or display case can reduce handling damage after you have assessed the game. Select one by the exact dimensions and format of the box. A protector preserves condition; it does not authenticate the game, improve a seal or replace a return policy.
Bottom line
The safest purchase process is cumulative: identify the exact release, compare its seal with known copies, inspect flaps and cardboard for opening evidence, verify that all packaging belongs together, obtain complete photographs and provenance, and check any certification record against the physical item. If uncertainty remains, either negotiate a price that reflects it or use an independent service whose current terms and cost you have confirmed. No photograph, seller statement or grade can guarantee original contents or a profitable resale.
