Before buying a refurbished or open-box Galaxy S25 Ultra, confirm the exact model and storage, compatibility with your carrier, account and activation status, battery promise, and the seller’s written return and warranty terms. Then use the return period to inspect the phone, run Samsung Members diagnostics, test its key functions, and install an official software update. “Refurbished” and “open-box” are seller descriptions—not universal guarantees of condition, battery health, or water resistance.
Compare the terms that affect your risk
Put competing offers side by side. A lower price may not be a better deal if the listing has a shorter return window, no battery commitment, or a warranty that excludes the repairs you might need.

Before you pay
- Save a copy or screenshot of the listing, including its condition grade, seller identity, included items, and return and warranty terms.
- Ask the seller to confirm the exact model, region, and storage, and that the phone is unlocked for your carrier and free of account, financing, or activation locks. Samsung says its own US Certified Re-Newed devices are unlocked; that does not establish the status of a third-party listing.
- Get the battery condition and any battery-related promise in writing. Open-box does not necessarily mean the battery is unused or new.
- Confirm what happens if the phone arrives damaged or fails a check. In the US, Samsung’s direct-purchase help page says mobile devices generally have a 15-day return window, defects or damage must be reported within five days, and Galaxy S-series phones have no restocking fee. Check the phone during the return period
Keep the packaging, accessories, and seller correspondence until you have decided to keep the device. Work through these checks promptly so you have time to report problems within the seller’s deadline.
- Match the device to the listing. Compare the model and IMEI information on the phone with the listing, receipt, and box where available. If the identifiers do not agree, stop and resolve the discrepancy with the seller before keeping the phone.
- Inspect the exterior and display. Look for cracks, scratches, dead pixels, discoloration, and touch areas that do not respond. Check the frame, rear glass, camera covers, and USB-C port for dents or damage. Cosmetic standards differ by grade, so compare what you see with the grade you purchased.
- Run Samsung’s diagnostics. Open Samsung Members and run Phone diagnostics; Device care diagnostics may also be available. Tests can include battery status, camera, touchscreen, S Pen, speaker, microphone, buttons, fingerprint sensor, connectivity, NFC, USB, and cable or wireless charging. - Test everyday functions yourself. Place a call, check mobile data and Wi-Fi, record and play audio, use the front and rear cameras, press the buttons, try the S Pen, and test fingerprint recognition. Check cable charging and wireless charging if available.
- Check software and updates. In Settings, check the software version and install any available official update while the phone is still returnable. Samsung lists Android 15 and One UI 7.0 at launch for the S25 Ultra and commits to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. - Confirm normal setup works. Make sure the seller has removed their accounts and that you can add your own. If you cannot reset and activate the phone normally, use the seller’s stated return process.
Understand what “Certified Re-Newed” does—and does not—mean
Samsung’s own Certified Re-Newed program is a defined process; an unrelated seller’s “refurbished” label is not equivalent. Samsung US says its Certified Re-Newed phones use genuine Samsung parts, receive a certified new battery, pass a 147-point quality test, and include a one-year limited warranty and 15-day return window. It also lists unlocked carrier compatibility and a starter kit. Verify the live listing and terms, since stock and offers can change. Availability and terms differ by market. In a January 13, 2026 announcement, Samsung said S25-series Certified Re-Newed models, including the S25 Ultra, were available in select European markets: Germany and the UK, and in France under the Refurbished Premium by Samsung label. Do not assume a used phone is still water-resistant
Samsung lists an IP68 rating as a Galaxy S25 Ultra specification. That describes the model, not the condition of the seals on a particular used or repaired phone. Do not submerge or splash-test it. If water resistance matters to you, ask whether the phone was opened or repaired and request documentation for that device from the seller or an authorized service provider. Keep the evidence and follow the seller’s return process
Save the listing, receipt, photos of the device on arrival, diagnostic results, and written seller replies. If a mismatch or fault appears, report it within the seller’s deadline and follow its return instructions.
