“MSI Claw” is a product family. The original Claw A1M appears in multiple configurations, while the Claw 8 AI+ is a separate model. Understand the condition label and seller protection
Open-box, certified refurbished and seller-refurbished are different
An open-box unit may have been returned with little or no repair; “refurbished” may mean a manufacturer, retailer or individual inspected and repaired it. Ask what was replaced, whether the unit was stress-tested, and whether the cosmetic grade has a written definition. Do not assume that a manufacturer-certified listing and a private seller’s “refurbished” description provide equivalent testing or support.
Get return and warranty terms in writing
Before payment, obtain the return deadline, the date the clock starts, who pays return shipping, the warranty provider, exclusions, the end date and whether coverage follows the device to a subsequent owner. The cited MSI material does not establish a general warranty-transfer rule, so a seller’s assurance that “the warranty should be fine” is not enough. Keep screenshots or the order document showing the terms that applied when you bought.

Store inventory and terms can change. Verify the live listing, the exact SKU and the serial with MSI or the selling retailer immediately before committing.
Inspect the hardware before accepting it
If you can meet the seller, plan a test session in good light. For a shipped purchase, use the return period to perform the same checks and record any defect with photographs or video.
Exterior and display
- Look across the display for cracks, pressure marks, bright or dead pixels and uneven backlighting. View a white, black and mid-gray image if possible.
- Examine the shell, seams, screws, bumpers and corners for impact damage, swelling or signs of opening.

- Insert and remove a microSD card when the model includes the reader, then copy a test file.
- Check the installed storage capacity in Windows and compare it with the listing; a smaller drive may indicate a different SKU or an upgrade that was not disclosed.
Charging and power behavior
Use the supplied or specified 65W adapter. Confirm that Windows reports charging, that the connector does not need to be held at an angle and that the device does not unexpectedly shut down while launching a game or another demanding task. A seller who cannot provide the correct adapter prevents you from testing an important part of the purchase.

Battery health: what you can and cannot prove
The A1M’s published battery capacity is 53 Wh, but that is the design rating for a new unit, not a measurement of a used battery’s remaining capacity. Ask the seller whether they have a Windows battery report, service record or other dated evidence, and ask when it was generated. Treat an unverified claim such as “battery is like new” as an opinion rather than a specification.
During testing, note whether the charge percentage rises normally, whether the adapter remains connected without interruption and whether the handheld powers off unexpectedly. A brief video of the percentage increasing while plugged in is useful evidence, but it still cannot predict runtime in every game or establish a formal health threshold. MSI does not publish a universal used-battery pass mark, so decide how much uncertainty you will accept and make the return policy your fallback.
How to check the MSI Claw model and specs in BIOS
MSI’s BIOS instructions account for the Claw’s lack of a physical keyboard. To open BIOS Setup, power on the handheld and hold RB + RT when the MSI logo appears. Use the system-information screen to compare the model, processor and other identifiers with the advertisement. Photograph the screen only after hiding any serial number you do not want shared.
BIOS is a consistency check, not a complete condition report. It does not establish battery capacity, warranty eligibility, ownership, cosmetic condition or the absence of an intermittent fault. Also compare the Windows storage and memory report after the device starts; a mismatch between BIOS, Windows and the listing is a reason to pause the transaction.
Check for a clean handover and personal-data removal
Ask the seller to sign out of Microsoft and game accounts, remove saved payment details and show either the Windows first-run setup or a desktop with no personal files. Do not accept a device that remains locked to another person’s account. If the seller cannot demonstrate a clean handover, make the return condition explicit before paying.

- Back up any files that must be retained. MSI warns that the restore erases everything on the system.
- Connect the original or correctly specified AC adapter.
- Start the Claw and hold LB + LT to invoke the documented recovery path.
- Follow the on-screen restore prompts without disconnecting AC power.
- At the Windows first-run screen, stop and let the new owner complete setup; do not enter your own account.
If Windows was manually reinstalled or the factory recovery environment is missing, this button combination may not provide the documented restore. Use Windows’ supported reset process or obtain the correct recovery guidance from MSI rather than assuming the shortcut will work.
For an online purchase, document the first inspection
Save the product page, seller messages, serial-number photos and promised accessory list before opening the parcel. Record the unboxing if the retailer’s policy permits it, and photograph the box, seals, charger and every visible mark. Start the inspection promptly because a return clock may begin at delivery rather than at first use.
Check the model and storage before downloading games or signing into personal services. If the device is wrong, damaged or account-locked, contact the seller through the platform’s written channel immediately. - “Is this manufacturer-certified refurbished, retailer open-box, seller-refurbished or used? What parts were replaced?”

Specific answers are more valuable than a high condition grade with no supporting detail. If the seller avoids the SKU, refuses a basic function test or will not state the return terms, treat that refusal as part of the risk calculation.
Why an MSI Claw may not wake after sleep
MSI documents a low-battery protection state in which a Claw may not wake directly after sleep while disconnected from AC. The company describes that specific state as a protection feature, not a hardware failure. Reconnect the original adapter, press the power button and allow the battery time to charge before trying again.
This explanation is limited to the low-battery sleep condition described by MSI. It does not excuse a unit that fails to start on AC, repeatedly shuts down, refuses to charge or shows other symptoms. Record the behavior and use the seller’s return or warranty process if charging and a retry do not restore operation.

Compare two listings on total value, not headline price
Once a unit passes the identity and function checks, compare offers on the same axes. A cheaper handheld with no adapter, uncertain ownership and no practical return route may be more expensive after a battery or storage repair.

- The seller will not provide a full SKU or refuses to show system information.
- The model in BIOS or Windows does not match the advertisement.
- There is no clear answer about the original region, serial, ownership or account lock.
- The correct charger is missing and the seller will not let you test charging with a compatible 65W adapter.
- The return policy is verbal, unusually short, conditional on accepting undisclosed faults or requires you to pay unreasonable return shipping.
- Buttons, sticks, ports or the display are “untested,” yet the price is presented as if the unit were fully functional.
- The seller claims that all MSI Claws have the same warranty or that warranty automatically transfers, without documentation for the exact serial and region.
