Then read the written warranty and confirm the seller’s return, installation, and old-appliance pickup terms. A low sticker price alone does not show whether the purchase is a good deal.
1. Identify the exact model and full price
Write down the refrigerator’s complete model number, not just its brand or product-family name. Sale listings can make similar-looking units difficult to distinguish; a precise model lets you compare the same product across sellers and check its specifications and installation guide.

Ask what the displayed price includes. Depending on the seller, delivery, installation, water-line connection, and removal of the old refrigerator may be separate charges. Ask whether any financing terms affect the amount you will pay. Compare the total cost for the same model and services rather than comparing headline prices alone.
2. Check that it fits the kitchen and the delivery route
Measure the available opening’s height, width, and depth, then compare those dimensions with the candidate model’s installation guide. Do not assume the refrigerator can be pushed flush against a wall or cabinet: required ventilation space varies by model. Also check whether its doors can open fully in the intended position. The Federal Trade Commission recommends allowing for full door opening and safe ventilation; use the specific model’s guide for exact clearances: FTC consumer guidance on appliance energy labels and shopping.

Measure the route from the entrance to the kitchen, including doorways, hallways, stairs, and tight turns. A unit that fits the opening may still be difficult or impossible to bring into the room. Confirm with the seller or delivery service what access measurements they require and what happens if delivery cannot be completed.
3. Choose capacity and layout for how you use it
Choose enough usable space for your household without paying for capacity you are unlikely to use. ENERGY STAR notes that larger refrigerators generally consume more energy, and that top-freezer models tend to use the least energy among common configurations. Door style and compartment layout also affect how you organize and reach food, so weigh those trade-offs against your household’s preferences rather than assuming one configuration is best for everyone. Compare the features you will actually use—such as a particular shelving arrangement or dispenser—with their effect on price, capacity, and energy use. A longer feature list is not automatically better value.

4. Compare energy use and likely running cost
Read the yellow EnergyGuide label for each exact model you are considering. It shows estimated energy use and an estimated annual operating cost, helping you compare similar appliances. The annual-cost estimate uses typical usage and a national-average energy price; your actual bill will depend on local electricity rates and how you use the refrigerator. ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting federal minimum standards. Treat certification as a useful filter, not a substitute for comparing the specific models’ EnergyGuide figures, price, size, and features. ENERGY STAR’s separate eligibility-criteria page states that its criteria require 10 percent less measured energy use than federal minimum standards and notes the criteria changed August 5, 2021: ENERGY STAR refrigerator eligibility criteria.
If you are considering an incentive, check with your utility and use the current ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder to see whether a local rebate applies to the model and purchase. Do not assume that certification guarantees a rebate. ENERGY STAR also identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants in its refrigerator guidance; consider refrigerant type if that matters to your purchase.

5. Read warranty, return, and repair terms before paying
Read the actual written warranty and identify its duration, exclusions, and who pays for labor or service. The Federal Trade Commission distinguishes a product warranty from a paid service contract; review what each covers before deciding whether extra coverage is worthwhile. For example, Costco’s published policy, dated March 3, 2026, provides a 90-day return period for refrigerators over 10 cubic feet and a second-year warranty obligation. That is Costco’s policy, not a general industry rule; check the policy that applies to your own seller and purchase: Costco member privileges and conditions.
For a particular model, look for reliable information about repair access and likely issues rather than relying on a brand-wide reputation alone. A retailer’s return window, the manufacturer’s warranty, and any optional service contract are distinct terms; make sure you know which party handles a problem and when.

6. Confirm delivery, installation, and old-unit removal
Before checkout, get the delivery date and scope in writing. Confirm whether installation and water-line connection are included, whether the delivery crew will need clear access, and whether old-appliance haul-away costs extra or has conditions. ENERGY STAR says many retailers pick up and recycle an old refrigerator when delivering a new one, but this is not guaranteed for every seller or transaction: ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance.
Ask what happens to the old unit if pickup is not included, and check local recycling or disposal options. Confirm any rebate requirements directly with the utility or program administrator, including whether the model, seller, and purchase date qualify.
