What to check before buying a phone online in India
Read the specific listing and checkout terms for the offer you intend to buy. A product-family name, promotional price or phone photograph alone may not identify the exact device or the terms that apply to it.

- Model and configuration: Match the full model name and storage and RAM variant to the phone you want. Check colour if it matters to you.
- Condition: Make sure the listing says whether the phone is new, refurbished or used, and that the condition is acceptable.
- Box contents: Check which accessories are included. Do not assume a charger or another item comes with the phone unless the offer says so.
- Seller: Note the seller’s name and look for contact or grievance information that lets you identify the party offering the device.
- Total price: Check the amount payable at checkout, including shipping and other disclosed charges. Treat bank, exchange or other promotional discounts as conditional until you have read their eligibility requirements.
- Delivery: Read the delivery estimate and fulfillment terms shown for that offer.
- Warranty and service: Check what warranty or guarantee applies and where service is available. If the listing is unclear, confirm the claim with the seller or phone brand.
- Returns and refunds: Read the applicable cancellation, return, exchange and refund conditions, including timelines, eligibility requirements and charges. Find out how the seller or platform handles a counterfeit report.
These details also make comparisons more meaningful. Compare offers for the same model and configuration, then weigh the final payable price against the seller, warranty and service route, delivery terms, return conditions and included items. If one listing is for a different storage size, condition or bundle—or a discount depends on a bank card or exchange—make that difference clear before comparing prices.

How to check a phone’s IMEI
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) eServices Portal offers a service called “Know Genuineness of Your Mobile Handset” for checking a device using its IMEI. Use the DoT eServices Portal when you have the number. Do not assume you can verify a sealed phone’s IMEI before delivery; if you cannot access it until the device arrives, check it then. If the result or device identity is unclear, contact the seller or phone brand. DoT’s eServices FAQ also describes manufacturer and importer registration obligations under the Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024.
What records to keep
Save a copy or screenshot of the listing and offer as they appeared when you bought the phone. Keep the order confirmation, invoice or receipt, and relevant packaging until you have checked the device. These records help establish what was offered and purchased if you need to raise a complaint; BIS consumer guidance also recommends keeping purchase details and a cash memo if available.

Where to go if something goes wrong
Start with the seller or platform for an order or listing dispute. For consumer grievances, the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) provides online and other contact options on its official site; its current landing page lists toll-free 1915 and hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the site for current operating details. NCH also explains the “Right to be Informed” in its Consumer Protection Act 2019 knowledge base.

For concerns specifically about BIS-certified products, standards claims or related matters, BIS lists complaint channels including BIS CARE, the Standard Promotion Portal, email and relevant offices on its consumer protection page.
