Before you place a launch-day phone order, work out the full cost, verify the exact model will work with your carrier, and check how financing, trade-ins, and returns affect the deal. An advertised discount is only useful if you qualify for it and can live with its conditions.
1. Calculate what the phone will really cost
Compare the amount due at checkout with the total you may owe over time. Include the phone’s down payment and installments, required service-plan charges, taxes, activation fees, and any deposit. Then account for a trade-in or promotional credit only after checking its eligibility rules and timing.

A discount may arrive immediately, or as bill credits spread across multiple bills. For example, Verizon says promotion requirements vary; some credits depend on keeping a qualifying plan and payment agreement. - Amount due today, including taxes, fees, and any required down payment.
- Total device-payment obligation and how long payments or credits continue.
- Whether the discount is immediate or conditional on future bill credits.
- Required plan, account eligibility, trade-in condition, and any tenure rules stated in the offer.

2. Verify the exact phone works on your carrier
Check the precise model and variant you are buying against your carrier’s requirements. A phone can be unlocked and still lack support for a network frequency or carrier feature you need. T-Mobile warns that non-T-Mobile devices can vary in compatibility and performance, and directs buyers to check frequency support: T-Mobile’s BYOD guide.

Use the carrier’s compatibility or eligibility check when available, and compare its result with the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact variant. Do not assume that a similarly named model, a different regional version, or an unlocked listing will work identically.
3. Check whether the phone is locked—and when it can be unlocked
Confirm the lock status for the exact purchase route: the seller, carrier, and financing arrangement all matter. Apple’s U.S. iPhone shopping guidance says an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program remains locked to that carrier until it is paid in full: Apple iPhone shopping help.

That is specific to the listed financing programs, not a universal rule for every phone or carrier. If you may switch carriers, travel with a local SIM, or sell the phone before finishing payments, check the seller’s and carrier’s current unlock policy before ordering.
4. Read trade-in terms before sending your old phone
Before accepting a trade-in estimate, check the eligible model and condition, any account or plan requirements, and when and how the credit is delivered. Keep a record of the old phone’s condition and follow the seller’s submission instructions so you can address a valuation dispute.

5. Confirm the return window and what a return changes
There is no single return period that applies to every launch-day purchase. The window and conditions depend on the seller and purchase route. Google Store lists distinct return windows for certain U.S. carrier-activated Verizon and AT&T orders, while Motorola publishes separate terms for direct-sale phones. Use the current policy for the exact order, not a return period remembered from another retailer or carrier:

Check whether returning the phone affects promotional credits, trade-in value, financing, or service charges, and note any steps or deadlines required to complete the return.

Launch-day inventory and delivery estimates can change, so confirm availability and the estimated arrival date on the actual listing and in checkout. Before submitting the order, review the phone configuration, carrier and lock status, amount due today, recurring device and service charges, fees, and offer conditions.
