Before paying for a newly launched phone in India, verify the exact India model, authorised seller, IMEI, final delivered price, box contents, written software-support promise, network bands, warranty and nearby service. Only then compare the screen, storage, sustained performance, battery, cameras, size and accessibility features with the way you will actually use the phone.
This order matters because launch-event specifications do not prove that a particular unit is genuine, compatible with your carrier, covered by an India warranty or supported for the life you expect.

Start with the exact India variant
Write down the complete model identifier and configuration shown on the product page, invoice and retail box before comparing prices. A phone sold under one family name can have different memory, storage, modem, SIM and warranty arrangements in different countries.
Record these identifiers
- Model number and regional suffix, not just the marketing name.
- RAM and storage capacity, plus the storage type if the manufacturer states it.
- SIM arrangement: two physical SIMs, one physical SIM plus eSIM, or another combination.
- Listed 4G and 5G bands for the India unit.
- Whether the listing says it is officially sold for India and includes an India warranty.
Do not assume that an imported global variant will have the same bands, carrier features, warranty coverage or in-box accessories. If a listing omits the model identifier or India warranty terms, treat that as an unresolved risk rather than filling in the gap from a similarly named phone.

Confirm the seller and that the handset is genuine
Buy from an authorised seller where possible and retain the tax invoice. The Press Information Bureau’s buyer guidance is direct: “Purchase mobile devices only from authorised sellers and verify the IMEI details.” An unusually low price, an unclear seller name or a listing that changes after checkout is a reason to pause.
Match the IMEI in four places
- On the phone, open Settings and look under About phone, Status or a similarly named device-information screen. You can also display the IMEI with the phone dialler code
*#06#when supported. - Compare that number with the label on the retail box.
- Check that the invoice identifies the same device or serial/IMEI information where the seller provides it.
- Use the government’s Sanchar Saathi IMEI-verification facility to confirm the reported brand, model and manufacturer, then save a screenshot or confirmation for your records.
Dual-SIM phones can show two IMEI numbers. Check each one and keep the numbers private when sharing photographs publicly. A mismatch between the handset, box, invoice and verification result is a stop signal: do not activate the phone until the seller resolves it in writing.
Use BIS information as a compliance check, not a performance guarantee
The Bureau of Indian Standards’ current Scheme II listing includes mobile phones under IS/IEC 62368: Part 1: 2023. BIS Care provides R-number verification for electronic products covered by the Compulsory Registration Scheme and access to compulsory-certification listings.
Look for the applicable registration information on the device, packaging or official product material and verify an R-number through BIS Care when one is provided. A valid listing helps establish that the product is represented in the relevant compulsory-certification system; it does not prove camera quality, battery endurance, update reliability, repair speed or every claim made by a seller. A missing or unreadable number should be clarified with the manufacturer or authorised seller before purchase.
Calculate the delivered price and inspect the box contents
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not the launch-event headline price. Start with the phone’s India price and then account for bank discounts, exchange credits, seller fees, delivery charges, taxes shown at checkout and any conditions attached to an offer. An exchange or card promotion may be unavailable to you, limited to a particular payment method or dependent on a later verification.

Make the accessory decision from the exact listing
Record whether the box contains a charger, USB cable, case, screen protector, SIM tool and region-appropriate documentation. If the charger is omitted, first confirm the phone’s charging protocol, maximum supported input and cable requirement. A charger that physically fits the port may still charge slowly, fail to trigger the advertised mode or be unsafe if it does not meet the required specification. Buy a compatible, safety-certified charger only after those details are clear.
The presence of a cable or case also varies by configuration and market. Save a copy of the product-page “in the box” section and photograph the sealed package before opening it so an omission can be demonstrated during a return or claim.

Read the written software and security-support promise
Find the manufacturer’s written commitment for operating-system upgrades and security updates. Record the duration, the date from which it is counted, the expected cadence and any statement that delivery can vary by region, carrier or model. Do not infer support length from the launch date, the phone’s price tier or a salesperson’s verbal assurance.
Questions the support policy must answer
- How many major operating-system upgrades are promised?
- For how many years are security patches promised?
- Does the clock start at launch, first sale or another date?
- Are updates monthly, quarterly or described only as periodic?
- Does the India variant receive the same commitment as other regions?
- Which entity handles support if the phone was imported?
Save the policy page or document with the invoice. A long promise is useful only if it applies to your exact model and India variant; a shorter but explicit commitment is easier to assess than an unqualified claim that updates will be provided “for years.”
Check network compatibility where you live
Compare the precise India model’s supported 4G and 5G bands with the bands used by your carrier in your city, workplace and regular travel locations. Band count alone does not establish coverage or compatibility. A model can list many bands yet lack a band or carrier feature that matters to you.

Verify these separately
- 4G and 5G bands used by your operator in the places you frequent.
- VoLTE, VoWiFi and other carrier-specific features you rely on.
- Physical-SIM and eSIM availability on the India variant.
- Whether both SIMs can use the advertised network modes simultaneously, if that matters.
- Any carrier activation or regional restrictions stated by the manufacturer.
Ask the operator about current support rather than relying on a global specification sheet. If you travel between cities or across borders, check those locations too. Keep the manufacturer’s band table for the exact model as evidence if a seller’s generic page lists a different variant.
Understand warranty coverage and repair access
Read the India warranty document before checkout. Confirm the duration, what components are covered, exclusions, proof-of-purchase requirements, service process and whether the policy applies to the exact model and seller channel.
Pay particular attention to exclusions
- Cracked screens, dents, bent frames and other physical damage.
- Liquid or moisture indicators and corrosion.
- Damage caused by unsupported chargers, accessories or software changes.
- Battery-capacity limits and whether the battery is treated as a consumable.
- International or marketplace purchases that are excluded from India service.
Locate an authorised service centre or dependable authorised repair option near your home or work before buying. Note opening hours, booking requirements, typical intake documents and whether the company offers pickup service. A warranty is less useful if every claim requires sending the phone to another city or if the seller, rather than the manufacturer, is the only contact.
The Department of Consumer Affairs advises buyers to obtain product and guarantee/service information before choosing. Its consumer-rights page, last updated 28 March 2025, states: “Consumer should insist on getting all the information about the product or service before making a choice or a decision.”
Judge the hardware for your use, not the launch slide
Display
Check size, resolution, peak and sustained brightness claims, refresh-rate behaviour, touch response and readability in the lighting where you use the phone. A high maximum refresh rate may be adaptive rather than continuously available, and peak brightness figures are often measured under specified conditions. Look for automatic-brightness behaviour, flicker or dimming controls if your eyes are sensitive, and an accessibility section covering text size, contrast, colour correction and screen magnification.

Storage and memory
Compare the capacity you will have after the operating system and preinstalled software, not only the printed number. Identify whether storage is expandable, whether the phone uses a faster storage standard and whether the selected configuration has enough room for photos, offline maps, games and updates over the support period. The same model name can hide a lower-storage India configuration.
Sustained performance
Processor branding and a short benchmark peak do not tell you how the phone behaves during a long game, navigation session, video call or camera recording. Look for cooling details, performance modes and independent evidence specific to the exact model if sustained performance is important. Decide whether your priority is gaming, camera processing, multitasking, battery efficiency or simply smooth everyday apps.
Battery and charging
Capacity is only one part of battery life. Consider screen size and brightness, modem use in weak-signal areas, gaming, camera recording and background software. Check wired charging protocol and maximum rate, wireless charging if needed, charging limits or bypass modes, and the cost of a suitable charger if none is included. Do not treat a manufacturer’s endurance claim as a universal result without its test conditions.
Cameras
Match the camera system to specific jobs: people indoors, moving children, night scenes, documents, ultrawide landscapes, telephoto subjects or front-camera video. Count sensor and megapixel specifications only after checking stabilisation, autofocus, video-resolution limits, microphone behaviour and whether the useful modes work on the India software build. A camera specification cannot by itself predict results in your lighting.
Size, weight and accessibility
Check dimensions, weight, grip width, button placement and whether a case makes the phone uncomfortable. Confirm speaker loudness and clarity for calls, vibration strength, fingerprint or face-unlock method, hearing-aid or accessibility support where relevant, and the ease of reaching the top of the display. A lighter phone with adequate performance can be a better daily choice than a larger model whose headline specification you will rarely use.

What to compare when two new phones are available
Use the same evidence for each candidate. Fill in the table from the exact India listings and written policies; do not substitute a global specification or an unverified seller claim.
| Decision area | Phone A | Phone B | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final delivered price | Record checkout total | Record checkout total | Bank/exchange conditions, fees and delivery |
| India model and seller | Model number and seller | Model number and seller | Authorisation, invoice and India warranty |
| IMEI and compliance | Verified or unresolved | Verified or unresolved | IMEI consistency and applicable BIS information |
| Box contents | List included items | List included items | Charger, cable, case and documentation |
| Software support | Written years and cadence | Written years and cadence | Start point and India applicability |
| Network fit | Bands, SIM/eSIM and carrier features | Bands, SIM/eSIM and carrier features | Your operator and locations |
| Warranty and service | Terms and nearest centre | Terms and nearest centre | Exclusions, process and travel required |
| Hardware fit | Display, storage, sustained use, battery, cameras | Display, storage, sustained use, battery, cameras | Your actual workload and accessibility needs |
There is no universal winner. A phone with more storage may be preferable to one with a faster peak processor; a model with a charger in the box may cost less after accessories; and a slightly less ambitious camera system may be the safer choice if its service network and update policy are clearer.
Check Sanchar Saathi during setup
A Ministry of Communications release dated 1 December 2025 described Department of Telecommunications directions requiring the Sanchar Saathi app to be pre-installed on handsets manufactured or imported for India, readily visible and accessible at first use or setup, with its functions not disabled or restricted. The release also said manufacturers and importers should endeavour to push the app through software updates to devices already in sales channels.
Recommended Free Tools
The release does not establish compliance for every specific model. When you open a new phone, check whether the app is present and accessible as described, and record the model, software version and seller if it is absent or restricted. Ask the seller or manufacturer for a written explanation before relying on the device.
Inspect the phone when it arrives
- Photograph the unopened package, shipping label, seals, model number and IMEI labels.
- Record an unboxing video if your seller’s return process accepts this kind of evidence.
- Check the model, storage, colour and IMEI against the order and invoice before removing protective films.
- Inspect the frame, screen, camera glass, ports, buttons and included accessories under good light.
- Power on, connect to Wi-Fi, install pending system updates and verify the software model information.
- Run the IMEI check, test both SIM paths if applicable, and make a brief call, data connection, camera, speaker, microphone, charging and biometric test.
- Keep the box, inserts and accessories until the return period and any initial inspection are complete.
Do not transfer all your data or discard packaging before you have confirmed the phone is the ordered India variant and works with your network. If an identifier, specification or accessory differs, stop using the device and contact the seller through the documented return or replacement channel.
Keep proof and use the proper redress route
Store the invoice, order page, warranty terms, screenshots of the specification and “in the box” list, IMEI-verification result, photographs and all support correspondence together. Write down dates, ticket numbers and the remedy requested. This record is useful if a seller edits a listing or disputes what was supplied.
The National Consumer Helpline identifies safety, information, choice, hearing, redressal and consumer education among consumer rights. Use the seller’s stated process first, then escalate through the appropriate consumer-help channel when a genuine mismatch, safety issue or unresolved service failure is not addressed.

A practical stop-or-buy decision
- Buy now: the model and seller are clear, IMEIs match and verify, the delivered price and box contents are documented, your carrier works in your locations, and written support and warranty terms meet your needs.
- Wait for clarification: a seller has not supplied an India model number, support start date, band table, warranty document or charger specification.
- Walk away: the IMEI is inconsistent, the verification result identifies another model, the seller cannot provide an invoice, or the listing depends on an unexplained imported-unit warranty.
These checks turn a launch purchase from a specification impulse into a documented decision. Recheck price, availability, support terms, service locations and regulatory information immediately before paying because each can change after launch.
