The right multi-site hosting plan is determined by what “site” means to the provider, how all of your websites share resources, how easily you can recover them, and what you will actually pay at checkout and renewal. Before comparing plan names, list the independent WordPress installs, mapped domains, and any WordPress Multisite subsites you need. Then test that portfolio against the plan’s site cap, pooled storage and performance allowances, backup and staging policy, operational features, and complete cost.
If you are asking, “Should I buy multiple web hosting packages for every website?” the answer is usually conditional: one multi-site account can simplify management for compatible, modest workloads, while separate accounts or isolated installs may be safer when sites have different owners, risk profiles, traffic patterns, or recovery requirements. The checklist below lets you make that decision without relying on a headline site count.

1. Define exactly what you are hosting
Start with an inventory, not a plan page. For every website, record its domain, content-management system, expected traffic, storage, email needs, commerce or membership functions, and who needs access. Mark whether it must be independent from the others.
Separate installs, mapped domains, and Multisite subsites are different
A provider may count a WordPress install, a mapped domain, or a subsite in a WordPress Multisite network as a “site.” Those are not interchangeable units. Several domains can point to one WordPress install, while a Multisite network can contain domain-, subdomain-, or subdirectory-based subsites. Kinsta’s billing documentation explains that an install includes live and staging environments and that a mapped domain does not automatically become another install: Kinsta’s WordPress hosting-plan documentation.

Ask these questions in writing before purchase:
- How many separate production installs are included?
- Do staging and development environments count toward that number?
- Are aliases or mapped domains billed as additional sites?
- How many Multisite subsites are allowed?
- Does the subsite limit include production, staging, and development environments?
- Can one account contain both independent installs and a Multisite network?
Plan documentation can impose materially different rules. WP Engine publishes plan-level Multisite limits across production, staging, and development environments, and its Startup plan does not support Multisite. Its guidance says, “Exceeding this limit may result in a poor experience or degraded performance,” referring to the documented subsite limit; treat that as a provider-specific warning, not an industry-wide threshold. Choose the architecture before choosing the package
Separate installs give each site its own WordPress files, database, plug-ins, themes, updates, and administrative boundary. That can make client handoffs, selective restores, and incident containment simpler. A shared Multisite network centralizes administration and can suit related departments or organizations that intentionally share code, users, and resources. It also means a network-level change or resource spike can affect multiple subsites, and moving one subsite away later may require additional work.
Do not assume that a “10 sites” allowance means ten isolated environments. Confirm whether the provider means ten installs, ten subsites, or ten domains attached to fewer installs.
2. Calculate the combined resource budget
A multi-site plan is usually a portfolio budget. Storage, CPU, memory, PHP workers or threads, databases, visits, and bandwidth may be shared by every site rather than reserved per site.
Measure the busiest site and the total workload
Estimate the normal and peak requirements of each website, then add them together. Include media libraries, backups, logs, staging copies, databases, scheduled jobs, traffic bursts, and seasonal events. A small brochure site may use little capacity while a single store, membership site, or heavily edited publication consumes most of the account’s CPU, PHP workers, or database time.

OVHcloud explicitly states that disk space, CPU, and RAM are shared among websites on its multi-site hosting: OVHcloud’s multi-site hosting page. Kinsta similarly documents shared allowances for visits or bandwidth, SSD storage, CDN bandwidth, and, for Multisite, CPU, RAM, and PHP threads: Kinsta’s plan-billing documentation. Therefore, multiplying an assumed per-site allowance is unsafe unless the provider explicitly allocates that capacity per install.
Compare the actual limits, not the marketing label
Record every quantitative allowance in one worksheet. At minimum, capture:

- CPU, RAM, PHP threads or workers, and database limits.
- Number of databases, cron jobs, or concurrent processes where published.
- CDN bandwidth and any separate image or object-storage allowance.
- Whether limits are shared across the account, an install, or a Multisite network.
Elementor’s current hosting table illustrates why the numbers matter. It lists the following product specifications:

These are Elementor’s plan specifications, not general market benchmarks; verify the current table before ordering at Elementor’s hosting-plan page. Also establish whether its site count refers to independent installs, domains, or another unit.
Ask what happens at the limit
A limit is useful only when you know the consequence. Ask whether the provider throttles traffic, charges an overage, suspends a process, blocks new deployments, or requires an upgrade. Find out whether one site can consume the account’s shared PHP workers or memory and degrade its neighbors, and whether usage alerts arrive before that happens. Request the measurement window as well: “monthly visits” may not describe the same thing as bandwidth or server requests.

Budget for growth, not just launch day
Project storage and traffic for at least the initial contract term. Include expected image and video growth, new client sites, marketing campaigns, seasonal peaks, and staging clones. Verify the next upgrade tier, its new limits, the migration process, and whether you can move one busy site to a separate account without moving the entire portfolio.

“Daily backups included” does not tell you whether you can recover from a bad update, account compromise, accidental deletion, or a failed deployment. Compare the complete recovery path.
Questions for the backup policy
- How often are automatic backups created?
- How many days or versions are retained?
- Are copies stored independently of the hosting account?
- Can you create an on-demand backup before an update?
- Are backups locked against deletion or ransomware-style changes?
- Can you restore a complete account, one install, one database, or selected files?
- Is restoration self-service, and is there a fee or support wait?
OVHcloud states that its plans include daily automatic backups restorable from up to 14 days earlier: OVHcloud’s multi-site hosting information. That is a specific retention statement, not a promise that every multi-site plan has the same policy.
Check staging boundaries and overwrite risks
Staging is valuable for testing theme, plug-in, code, and content changes, but it consumes capacity and can have its own backup rules. DreamHost describes plan-specific retention, on-demand and locked backups, and one-click staging. It also says staging requires at least 5 GB of free space, is not included in live-site daily backups, and that publishing staging can overwrite newer changes on the live site. Read those conditions in DreamHost’s managed WordPress documentation.
Before buying, confirm whether staging is included, how many staging environments are allowed, whether staging data is backed up, and what the publish operation overwrites. Make a restore test part of onboarding: create a harmless change, take an on-demand backup, restore it to a staging or temporary location, and verify files, database content, media, cron jobs, and domain settings.

4. Verify the operational features you actually need
Feature checklists often hide the work that makes a portfolio manageable. Confirm each item for the exact plan and billing region.
SSL, domains, email, and migrations
- Find out whether SSL certificates are included for every production domain and whether renewals are automatic.
- Check the number of domains, aliases, redirects, and subdomains allowed.
- Determine whether email mailboxes are included, limited, or sold separately. Include mailbox storage and migration in your cost model.
- Ask whether migration assistance covers every site, only one site, or only a supported CMS, and whether the provider will migrate databases, DNS, email, and cron jobs.
Support and management boundaries
Clarify support hours, channels, response targets, and what the staff will troubleshoot. “Managed WordPress” may cover core updates and server administration while excluding custom plug-ins, application bugs, DNS, email, or third-party code. For a client portfolio, confirm whether multiple administrators, per-site permissions, audit logs, and transfer of ownership are available.
Security and isolation
Ask which security controls are included: malware scanning or cleanup, web-application firewall rules, account isolation, two-factor authentication, rate limiting, vulnerability notifications, and server-level patching. Determine whether a compromised site can read another site’s files or databases. If the provider cannot explain the isolation boundary, treat all sites on the account as sharing a risk surface and price an architecture with stronger separation.

Record the amount due now and the expected recurring amount separately. Include:
- Base hosting price for the selected term.
- Renewal price after any introductory period.
- Taxes and regional charges.
- Domain registration and renewal for every domain.
- Email accounts, mailbox storage, or external mail service.
- Migration fees, extra storage, extra sites, premium staging, and backup extensions.
- Traffic, bandwidth, or resource overage charges.
- Paid support, security, CDN, or restore services.
Use the same term and feature set when comparing providers. A plan that looks cheaper can cost more once it needs an additional site, staging copy, mailbox, storage block, or migration. Save the checkout summary and renewal terms because plan pages and promotions can change.
6. Match the plan to your portfolio’s risk and organization
When one multi-site account can be practical
A shared account can be a sensible fit for a handful of low-traffic sites with similar technology, one administrator, modest storage, and a tolerance for shared resources. Centralized updates, billing, SSL management, and support can reduce routine work. Confirm that the account still provides enough recovery depth and that one site’s resource use cannot starve the others.
When separate accounts or stronger isolation deserve priority
Consider separate hosting accounts or isolated installs when sites have different owners, legal or security requirements, incompatible software, sharply different traffic, independent release schedules, or contractual uptime expectations. A high-traffic store should not depend on the same shared pool as several brochure sites if a spike could exhaust PHP workers or memory. Separate accounts also make it easier to transfer one client, pause one project, or recover one site without changing the rest.
When WordPress Multisite is the better fit
Multisite is designed for related sites that benefit from centralized administration, shared themes or plug-ins, and a common user model. It is not simply a discount for independent websites. Check the host’s supported subsite count, environment rules, domain mapping, database behavior, backup granularity, and extraction process before committing. A provider’s published limit is a capacity boundary for that provider, not a universal recommendation.
7. A practical pre-purchase procedure
- Inventory the portfolio. List every production install, domain, expected Multisite subsite, staging copy, database, mailbox, and administrator.
- Classify independence. Mark which sites may share updates, users, resources, and downtime, and which require isolation.
- Measure the workload. Record current storage, monthly traffic or bandwidth, peak periods, PHP or database pressure where available, and six- to twelve-month growth.
- Translate the provider’s vocabulary. Ask what “site,” “install,” “environment,” “domain,” and “subsite” mean in the selected plan.
- Fill the limits worksheet. Capture storage, visits, bandwidth, CPU, RAM, workers or threads, databases, staging, and overage behavior.
- Read the recovery terms. Note frequency, retention, off-account storage, on-demand and locked backups, restore scope, restore fees, and staging backup treatment.
- Confirm operations. Verify SSL, DNS, email, migration, support, security, permissions, and account-transfer features.
- Run a cost comparison. Calculate amount due now, renewal, taxes, domains, email, migrations, add-ons, and likely overages.
- Test the exit path. Ask how to export files and databases, move a single site, cancel, and obtain backups after cancellation.
- Recheck the plan and checkout. Provider limits, features, prices, and regional terms change. Validate the final selection on the current plan page and checkout before payment.
8. Red flags that warrant a pause
- The plan advertises a site count but does not define whether it means installs, domains, or subsites.
- Storage is stated without saying whether backups and staging consume it.
- “Unlimited” traffic or sites appears without a fair-use, CPU, worker, or database explanation.
- Backups are mentioned without retention, restore scope, location, or restore pricing.
- Staging can publish over live content but has no documented rollback procedure.
- The provider cannot explain what happens when shared CPU, RAM, PHP, or bandwidth limits are reached.
- The promotional monthly figure is clear but the upfront term total or renewal rate is difficult to find.
- Moving one site out requires moving the entire account, or export and cancellation procedures are unclear.
Final checklist
Do not buy until you can answer these questions for your own portfolio:
- How many independent installs and Multisite subsites do I need today and after growth?
- Which domains are aliases rather than separate websites?
- What resources are pooled, and what is the combined peak workload?
- What happens when storage, traffic, CPU, RAM, or PHP-worker limits are reached?
- How often are backups made, how long are they kept, and can I restore one site myself?
- Does staging consume storage, receive backups, or risk overwriting newer live changes?
- Are SSL, email, migration, support, security, and per-site permissions included?
- What is due at checkout, what renews later, and which add-ons or overages are likely?
- Can I isolate, export, transfer, or recover one site without disrupting the rest?
The best multi-site plan is the one whose definition of a site, shared resource budget, recovery controls, operating features, and total cost match your actual portfolio. Validate those details at the provider’s current documentation and checkout rather than choosing by site count alone.
