Choose a mini PC by matching its actual ports, memory design, storage interfaces, and service access to your monitors, peripherals, software, and future upgrades. Connector counts alone are not enough: verify what each port does, whether RAM is socketed, which drive formats fit, and what the exact model and SKU support.
Start with the exact model and configuration
Mini PCs that share a product family name can have different processors, port layouts, memory limits, storage options, or wireless modules. Begin with the manufacturer’s specification page for the exact model, regional version, and configuration you intend to buy. Record the SKU, whether it is sold as a complete PC or a barebones kit, the RAM and SSD included, and whether an operating system is installed and licensed for that configuration.

Do not treat a family-level buying guide as a substitute for the model’s service manual or specification table. A general guide can describe a manufacturer’s usual design, but only the individual product page establishes the ports, slots, capacities, and warranty terms for the machine in your cart.
Audit every port by function, not shape
A USB-C connector can provide data, display output, power delivery, or a combination of those functions. Two ports that look identical may have completely different capabilities. Likewise, a mini PC with several USB-A sockets may still lack the particular speed, display connection, or charging behavior your setup requires.

Make a port inventory
Create a row for every connector and write down its documented role. Your inventory should include:
- The number and type of USB-A ports, including any stated data speed or special charging function.
- Each USB-C port’s supported functions: data, video output, power delivery, or a combination.
- The named display outputs and the number of monitors each output can support at the documented resolution and refresh rate.
- The Ethernet jack and its rated speed.
- The audio connection, such as a combined headphone/microphone jack or separate jacks.
- Any legacy connection required by an existing keyboard, printer, storage device, serial accessory, or other equipment.
For a display, match the output standard and the monitor’s input rather than assuming that an adapter will preserve every feature. Check the manufacturer’s stated resolution and refresh-rate limits for the monitor arrangement you plan to use. If the product page lists USB-C display support, confirm which physical USB-C socket provides it; a data-only socket will not drive a monitor.
A concrete example: the NAB6 Lite port table
The official NAB6 Lite specification page illustrates why the table matters. It identifies HDMI outputs, USB-C display support, several USB-C ports with different descriptions, USB-A ports, dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, and a combo audio jack. Those are specifications for that listed model, not a promise about every mini PC or every similarly named variant. Confirm the exact SKU and regional listing before relying on any of them.

Check the network connection you actually need
If you transfer files to a server, use network-attached storage, or have a faster-than-gigabit internet service, verify the Ethernet rating instead of assuming that every mini PC has the same jack. The NAB6 Lite listing, for example, states dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet. A different model may provide one slower port, no wired Ethernet, or require an adapter. Wi-Fi capability also belongs in the connectivity check, but a replaceable Wi-Fi module does not guarantee that an antenna layout or future module will be compatible.
Plan peripherals before purchase
List every device that must be connected at the same time: monitors, keyboard, mouse, webcam, audio interface, printer, external drives, card reader, and network cable. Count the required ports after allowing for the plugs’ physical size. A connector can be present yet unusable if a neighboring plug blocks it or if the port’s function is wrong. A hub or dock should be a response to a documented shortfall, not an assumption that any USB-C hub will provide video, power, and the required data speeds.
Evaluate memory as a physical design
Memory upgradeability depends on whether RAM is soldered to the board or installed in SO-DIMM sockets, how many sockets exist, which DDR generation is supported, and the maximum documented capacity. Record the capacity installed in the exact configuration, not merely the phrase “up to” followed by a larger number.
Questions to answer before ordering
- Is the memory soldered, socketed, or a mixture of both?
- How many SO-DIMM slots are available, and are they already occupied?
- Which DDR generation and memory specifications are supported?
- What is the manufacturer’s maximum supported capacity?
- Does the supplied configuration use one module or a matched pair?
- Is the machine a complete PC or a barebones unit that requires you to supply RAM?
- Does opening the case require a particular tool, and is the procedure documented?
A capacity limit is not an indication of what is included in the box. A system described as supporting up to 32 GB might ship with less, and a barebones model may ship without memory at all. Price the compatible modules needed to reach your target capacity before comparing configurations.

Model-specific evidence matters
The NAB6 Lite specification lists two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and support for up to 32 GB. That is useful evidence for that model, but it is not a category-wide standard. In its Ultimate MINISFORUM Buying Guide, the manufacturer says most of its mini PCs use SO-DIMM slots while identifying soldered LPDDR memory as an exception in its own lineup. Treat both statements as vendor-specific guidance and verify the machine you are buying.
Match memory to the workload
Estimate memory from the applications you will run simultaneously rather than choosing a number because it appears in a product headline. Office work, browser tabs, coding tools, virtual machines, creative applications, and local databases can have very different requirements. Leave room for the workload you expect to add during the computer’s useful life. If the RAM is soldered, the capacity you buy is effectively the capacity you will keep; if there are two sockets, check whether replacing both modules is necessary to reach the desired total.
Inspect storage capacity, interface, and expansion
Storage requires more than a capacity figure. Identify the drive type, physical dimensions, interface, number of storage positions, and any documented capacity or thermal limits. An M.2 socket is not automatically an NVMe storage socket: M.2 is a physical format, while the keying and interface determine what device it accepts.
Use this storage checklist
- Is the installed drive M.2 NVMe, SATA, or another type?
- What physical size is supported, such as M.2 2280?
- What interface and PCIe generation are documented?
- How many storage sockets are present, and are they all storage sockets?
- Is a second M.2 position for storage, or is it an M.2 wireless-card slot?
- If keying is specified, is the socket Key M for storage or Key E for a wireless module?
- Is there a separate 2.5-inch SATA bay, and are the caddy, cable, and mounting screws included?
- Does the documentation state a maximum drive capacity or a thermal restriction?
Do not confuse an M.2 slot with an interchangeable slot
Two M.2 sockets can accept different devices. A storage socket and a wireless-card socket may have different keying, electrical connections, and supported lengths. Read the documentation for the exact position you intend to use. If the listing does not identify a second socket as a storage slot, do not budget for a second SSD until the manufacturer confirms it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Example of a documented expansion layout
The NAB6 Lite page specifies one M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD and a 2.5-inch SATA expansion slot. That combination shows the level of detail to seek: the M.2 drive’s length and interface, plus a separately identified bay for a larger SATA drive. It does not establish that other mini PCs have the same arrangement. Check for the bay’s mounting hardware and cable, and confirm whether adding a drive affects cooling or access to another component.
Calculate usable capacity and upgrade cost
Compare the capacity supplied, the capacity you need for applications and files, and the cost of a compatible replacement or second drive. Include the price of RAM, an SSD, a mounting kit, or an adapter when a lower-priced barebones configuration requires those parts. A nominally inexpensive mini PC can cost more once it is equipped for the workload and peripherals you already own.
Separate replaceable parts from soldered parts
Think component by component. A removable SSD does not imply removable RAM, and socketed RAM does not imply an upgradeable processor. PCWorld’s article dated July 22, 2026, Most mini PCs can be upgraded. Here’s what’s worth doing, reports that RAM, SSDs, and Wi-Fi modules are replaceable in many mini PCs, while processors and integrated graphics are typically soldered. That describes a common design pattern, not a guarantee for an individual machine.

Set realistic upgrade expectations
- RAM: Upgradeable only when the design provides usable sockets and supports the required capacity.
- SSD: Often replaceable, but the replacement must match the socket’s interface, keying, length, and documented limits.
- Wi-Fi module: Frequently removable, yet antenna connectors, firmware support, and physical clearance still matter.
- Processor and integrated graphics: Typically soldered in mini PCs, so plan to replace the computer rather than upgrade these parts.
Before purchase, find a teardown, service guide, or official opening instructions for the exact model. Confirm that the upgrade path you want is physically accessible and supported. Do not infer serviceability from a product photograph or from another model in the same family.

Upgradeability has a practical side: you must be able to open the case without damaging clips, cables, or seals, and you need a documented way to reinstall the cover. Look for the screws, tool requirements, removable panels, and instructions for disconnecting storage or wireless antennas. Keep the original parts until you know the upgraded configuration is stable.
The NAB6 Lite product page says its top cover can be opened for upgrades. It also states that purchases from the manufacturer’s official store are covered by a two-year warranty. Warranty coverage is seller- and region-sensitive, so verify the policy, exclusions, return window, and service process that apply to your exact purchase before opening the machine. A retailer’s terms may differ from the manufacturer’s official-store terms.
Ask what happens if an upgrade fails
- Can you restore the original RAM or SSD to reproduce a fault?
- Does the manufacturer require original components for warranty service?
- Are BIOS updates or firmware settings required after installing a different drive or wireless module?
- Will the seller accept a return after the case has been opened?
- Can you obtain replacement screws, cables, or mounting brackets?
These questions matter especially for barebones systems, where the buyer is responsible for selecting compatible memory, storage, and sometimes an operating-system license.
Compare mini PCs on a common basis
When two systems appear similar, compare the configurations you would actually use. A fair comparison includes the parts and accessories needed to reach the same workload, monitor setup, and storage capacity.

Translate your workflow into a buying checklist
For a single-monitor office setup
Confirm one compatible display output, enough USB-A and USB-C ports for input devices and accessories, wired or wireless networking appropriate to your connection, and audio for calls. If you keep large local files, verify whether a second drive can be added without replacing the boot drive.

For two or more monitors
Write down each monitor’s input, target resolution, and refresh rate. Match those requirements to the named outputs and the documented multi-display capability. Do not count a USB-C connector as a monitor output unless the specification explicitly identifies display support on that port.
For development, virtual machines, or heavy multitasking
Prioritize socketed memory and a documented maximum that leaves headroom over the supplied configuration. Check whether both SO-DIMM slots are occupied and price the modules required for your target capacity. Storage expansion can be equally important when virtual-machine images, containers, or project repositories accumulate.
For a media or file server
Count the network ports and verify their speed, then identify the number and type of internal storage positions. A single M.2 boot drive may be insufficient if you need separate data storage; look for a documented 2.5-inch bay or additional storage socket and confirm the included cables and mounting parts.
For a long ownership cycle
Favor a model with accessible RAM and storage, published service instructions, and a warranty you can use in your region. Because processors and integrated graphics are typically soldered, choose their performance level at purchase rather than expecting a later CPU upgrade.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Counting connectors instead of functions
Five USB ports do not tell you whether a USB-C port carries video or whether enough ports remain after connecting a webcam, storage drive, and keyboard. Resolve every connector’s role from the specification table.
Assuming a family specification applies to every variant
Similarly named systems can change ports, memory, storage, or wireless hardware. Use the exact SKU and regional page, not a photograph or a generic family description.
Reading “up to” as the supplied configuration
“Up to 32 GB” describes a supported ceiling, not the memory installed in the box. Confirm the shipped capacity and module layout, then budget for the modules required to reach your target.

Buying an incompatible M.2 drive
Check interface, keying, length, and whether the socket is intended for storage. An M.2 wireless-card position is not a spare NVMe bay.
Expecting a CPU or graphics upgrade
Mini PC processors and integrated graphics are typically soldered. Select the performance you need at purchase and treat RAM, SSD, and possibly Wi-Fi as the realistic upgrade categories.
Ignoring the complete-system cost
A barebones price may exclude memory, storage, and an operating system. Add those items, plus any required adapter or mounting hardware, before comparing totals.
Overlooking dated guidance
Microsoft’s Desktop PC form-factors page was last updated August 24, 2021. It can provide historical form-factor context, but it is not a current market benchmark for mini PC ports, memory, or storage. No current independent market-wide statistic establishes how common any particular layout is, so model specifications should remain your evidence.
How to use manufacturer advice without overgeneralizing
The MINISFORUM buying guide frames selection around identifying bottlenecks in a specific workflow and choosing a machine that removes them. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance test, but the decision principle is sound: start with the monitor and peripheral functions, then memory and storage limits, and only afterward compare cosmetic size or headline specifications.
Use official documentation for compatibility and warranty facts, and use independent reporting such as PCWorld’s July 22, 2026 article for a broader explanation of which mini-PC components are commonly replaceable. Neither source removes the need to verify the exact model you plan to purchase.
