Before buying a materials-sector stock ahead of earnings, start with the issuer’s latest quarterly and annual filings, earnings release and guidance. Build a company-specific exposure map: commodities and products sold, realized prices, contract terms, hedges, production volumes, costs, capital spending, cash flow, debt and obligations. Then compare the new quarter with the company’s own previous disclosures. This process can show what could change the investment thesis without pretending that anyone can reliably predict an earnings beat or the stock’s immediate reaction.

Materials companies can report higher revenue while cash flow weakens, or miss a benchmark commodity move because prices are provisional, hedged, delayed or offset by lower volumes and higher costs. The checklist below is designed to identify those differences before you commit capital.

What should I check before buying a stock before earnings?

Use the following sequence, in order:

  1. Read the latest filings and release. Note the reporting period, production and sales data, guidance changes, risk factors and any revisions to prior assumptions.
  2. Map the business. Identify each commodity, product, mine or plant, region and major customer, then estimate where revenue and cash flow are concentrated.
  3. Test price realization. Compare benchmark prices with the prices the company actually records, including provisional settlements and contract formulas.
  4. Adjust for hedges and currencies. Record instruments, covered volumes, maturities, settlement dates and the currencies of revenue, costs and capital spending.
  5. Check operations and costs. Compare production, grades, recoveries, utilization, unit costs, maintenance and disruptions with earlier guidance.
  6. Stress the balance sheet. Review cash, operating cash flow, debt maturities, interest, covenants, capital needs, reclamation and other contractual obligations.
  7. Assess guidance quality and valuation. Determine which assumptions are already reflected in the share price and what new information would invalidate your thesis.

Write down the numbers before the announcement. A dated worksheet prevents the latest headline from replacing your original assumptions and makes it easier to distinguish a genuine change from a timing effect.

Start with the issuer’s own disclosures

Read the complete information set

Use the most recent quarterly filing, annual filing, earnings release, investor presentation and guidance update. Read the notes to the financial statements, not only the income statement. Notes often contain provisional pricing, derivatives, debt terms, commitments, segment data and non-GAAP reconciliations that materially change the headline interpretation.

Record the exact period covered and whether a figure is actual, estimated, budgeted or a forward-looking assumption. A 2026 production target cannot be compared with a 2025 actual without labeling the difference. Recheck the company’s investor-relations release immediately before the event because earnings dates, guidance and commodity assumptions can change.

Build a prior-guidance comparison

Create columns for the previous guidance, the latest guidance, the current quarter’s actual result and the explanation for each change. Track production, sales, grades or product quality, cash costs, all-in sustaining or equivalent measures, capital spending, tax, interest and expected cash flow. A small change in a range may be routine; a repeated reduction or a shift from production growth to maintenance spending may indicate a persistent operating issue.

Map the actual commodity and product exposure

Do not rely on the sector label

“Materials” can include gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, steelmaking coal, aggregates, chemicals and specialty products. List the commodities that generate revenue and those that drive costs. A company may sell several metals but receive most of its cash from one mine or one product. Concentration by asset, region or customer can matter more than the headline commodity.

For each product, record production volume, sales volume, benchmark used, realized price, currency and the period in which the sale is recognized. Separate payable metal or saleable product from mined or processed tonnes. Treatment charges, refining deductions, royalties and penalties can make the realized price diverge from a quoted benchmark.

Illustration: disclosed sensitivity is company-specific

Barrick Mining Corporation’s 2025 annual information filing used a 2026 gold-price assumption of $4,500 per ounce and estimated that a $100-per-ounce rise or fall would change 2026 EBITDA by approximately $650 million. The same filing used a $5.50-per-pound copper assumption and estimated that a $0.25-per-pound change would alter EBITDA by approximately $110 million. These are Barrick’s estimates for its expected 2026 production and sales, not a rule for gold or copper producers generally.

The filing also reported that gold prices ranged from $2,615 to $4,550 per ounce during 2025, with a 2025 average market price of $3,432 per ounce, 44% above the 2024 annual average. A historical range does not establish the price that will apply at the next settlement date. Barrick states that EBITDA is a non-GAAP measure without a standardized definition under IFRS, so the sensitivity should be read with the filing’s reconciliation and assumptions.

How do commodity prices affect a mining company’s earnings?

Commodity prices affect revenue only after considering volumes, payable content, contract formulas, hedges, currencies and settlement timing. The same benchmark move can produce very different earnings changes at two companies because their costs, grades, debt and exposure differ.

Compare benchmark and realized prices

Place the relevant benchmark beside the company’s realized price for the quarter. Investigate differences caused by treatment and refining charges, freight, quality adjustments, provisional pricing, fixed-price contracts, indexed formulas or geographic premiums. Do not assume that a benchmark increase is recorded immediately in current-quarter revenue.

Understand provisional settlement

Hecla Mining Company’s filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2026 explains that concentrate revenue may initially use forward prices for an estimated settlement month and can be adjusted until final customer settlement. That means a sale recognized this quarter may be remeasured in a later quarter when the customer settles at the final price. Look for the amount of provisional pricing exposure and the expected settlement month in the notes.

Read contract duration and pricing terms

Warrior Met Coal’s filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 reports that its steelmaking-coal contracts primarily use three-month pricing terms, with volume terms of one to three years. A contract can therefore provide volume visibility while leaving price exposure to periodic resets. Coal-specific terms should not be generalized to metal producers; identify the actual formula for each issuer.

Check hedges, currencies and settlement mechanics

Hedges change exposure; they do not remove operating risk

List every material collar, forward, put option or other derivative, along with the commodity, covered volume, strike or price range, maturity, settlement date and accounting treatment. Determine whether the hedge protects production, sales revenue, fuel, foreign exchange or capital costs. A hedge can cap upside, delay recognition, create collateral requirements or leave unhedged volume exposed.

Hecla describes collars, forwards and put options for certain metals. Its USD-functional-currency Canadian operations also create Canadian-dollar/U.S.-dollar remeasurement effects. Read whether the hedge is designated for accounting purposes or simply offsets an economic exposure; the timing of gains and losses can differ from the underlying operating transaction.

Match currencies to cash flows

Make a currency map with revenue, operating costs, capital spending, debt and taxes. A company may sell in U.S. dollars while paying labor, power or supplies in Canadian dollars, Australian dollars or another currency. A weaker local currency can reduce reported costs, but remeasurement losses, imported equipment and debt service can offset that benefit. Check the sensitivity tables and the maturities of currency hedges rather than assuming a favorable exchange-rate move will flow directly to earnings.

Examine operations before the price chart

Production and sales volumes

Compare mined or produced volume with saleable volume. Investigate inventory builds, shipment timing, customer delays, plant availability and weather. A quarter with strong production but weak sales may shift revenue into the following period; a drawdown of finished inventory may lift sales without proving that run-rate production improved.

Grades, recoveries and product mix

For mines, track ore grade, recovery, strip ratio and mill throughput. For processors and manufacturers, track utilization, yield, product mix and quality. A higher-grade quarter may not persist if the mine plan moves to a different ore zone. A lower-grade result can be temporary dilution or a sign of depletion, permitting constraints or metallurgical deterioration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance and disruptions

Separate planned maintenance from unplanned outages, strikes, safety events, permitting delays, severe weather and transport interruptions. Ask whether lost production can be recovered later or whether annual guidance must be reduced. Read subsequent-event disclosures for incidents occurring after the quarter but before filing.

Model costs, inflation and capital intensity

Break costs into drivers

Review energy, diesel, labor, freight, processing, maintenance, explosives, steel, reagents and other consumables separately where disclosed. Warrior Met Coal identifies diesel, steel, tungsten and explosives among production inputs and discusses inflation and interest-rate risk. Input inflation can overwhelm a favorable commodity move when the company has little pricing power or high energy intensity.

Distinguish sustaining and growth capital

Separate sustaining capital required to keep current production from growth projects that may add future capacity. Record spending to date, remaining budget, commissioning date, permitting status and financing source. A project that is not yet producing cash may require additional borrowing or equity, while a sustaining shortfall can impair future output.

Check unit-cost trends carefully

Unit costs can fall because of higher volumes, favorable by-product credits or currency movements without any structural efficiency improvement. Conversely, a temporary outage can inflate unit costs even if the annual plan remains intact. Reconcile reported unit costs with production volume, by-product prices and the company’s chosen definition.

Test cash generation and financial resilience

Accounting earnings are not cash

Compare net income and adjusted measures with operating cash flow, free cash flow, working-capital movements, taxes and royalties. Provisional pricing, inventory changes, receivables, payables and derivative settlements can make cash diverge from earnings. Check whether free cash flow is calculated before or after sustaining capital and whether the company excludes recurring costs.

Review debt, interest and liquidity

Record cash, undrawn facilities, debt maturities, floating-rate exposure, covenant thresholds and mandatory repayments. Rising interest costs can reduce cash available for capital programs even when EBITDA is stable. Stress the balance sheet under a lower commodity price, lower volume and higher input-cost scenario; then ask whether the company could fund required spending without refinancing.

Include obligations outside debt

Look for reclamation and closure liabilities, financial assurances, lease commitments, logistics contracts, take-or-pay arrangements, pensions, environmental obligations and legal contingencies. Warrior Met Coal’s filing discusses reclamation-related financial assurances, lease and logistics commitments, and debt and interest details. These commitments can consume cash during a downturn when operating flexibility is already limited.

Consider the downside to required spending

A commodity-price decline may reduce revenue while reclamation, safety, environmental and maintenance spending remains necessary. Determine which capital projects can be deferred and which obligations cannot. Liquidity is stronger when the company has cash and committed facilities that remain available after covenant tests and collateral requirements.

Evaluate guidance and non-GAAP measures

Write down every assumption

For production, cost, capital spending and cash-flow guidance, record the assumed commodity prices, exchange rates, volumes, grades, recoveries, energy costs, tax rates and project timing. Compare each assumption with recent actual results and the company’s history of delivering its own guidance. Forward-looking statements are estimates subject to the uncertainties described in the filings, not promises.

Reconcile adjusted metrics

Adjusted EBITDA, adjusted earnings, all-in sustaining cost and similar labels are defined by each issuer. Use the company-provided reconciliation to reported financial statements and list exclusions such as restructuring, impairments, fair-value changes, hedging effects or acquisition costs. Coeur Mining’s 2025 Form 10-K illustrates why issuer-defined EBITDA measures require careful reconciliation. Two companies’ “adjusted EBITDA” figures are not automatically comparable.

Newmont’s 2025 Form 10-K describes risks associated with commodity-price declines. Treat such risk language as a disclosure of possible outcomes, not as a quantified forecast for the next quarter.

Compare companies on a consistent basis

If you are choosing among materials stocks, use the same period, currency and definitions for each company. A comparison table should include:

Category Questions to answer Why it matters
Commodity mix Which products generate revenue and cash flow? How concentrated are assets and customers? Determines the true exposure behind the sector label.
Price realization What benchmark, contract formula or provisional price applies? What deductions and settlement adjustments exist? Shows why realized revenue may differ from a headline price.
Volumes and costs Are production, sales, grades, recoveries and unit costs improving or merely benefiting from timing? Separates operating performance from market-price effects.
Hedges and currency What volumes are hedged, for how long and in which currencies? Defines both protected and unprotected cash flows.
Capital intensity How much sustaining and growth capital is required, and are projects funded? Indicates future cash needs and execution risk.
Balance sheet What are cash, debt maturities, interest exposure, covenants and obligations? Measures resilience if prices or volumes fall.
Guidance definitions Are assumptions and adjusted measures reconciled consistently? Prevents false precision from incompatible company metrics.
Jurisdiction and operating risk What permitting, tax, political, infrastructure or weather risks affect assets? Explains why apparently similar producers can have different risk premiums.

Use consistent periods and reconcile issuer-defined measures wherever possible. Two miners producing the same headline metal can have very different sensitivities because of grade, by-product credits, hedges, contracts, costs and debt.

Decide what the earnings event can change

Separate thesis variables from noise

Before the announcement, write the two or three facts that would change your decision: for example, a sustained cost increase, a production revision, a project funding gap or a debt covenant issue. Label other figures as timing-sensitive, such as a shipment delayed by a week or a provisional price awaiting final settlement.

Assess expectations already in the share price

An earnings report can lift a stock even when reported profit rises if investors expected a larger increase. Conversely, a company can beat an accounting estimate while the shares fall because guidance, cash flow or future costs disappoint. The filings and examples above do not provide a reliable method for predicting that market reaction. Your task is to determine whether the current valuation is consistent with your own operating and financial assumptions.

Choose a risk limit and entry plan

Decide in advance how much event risk you are willing to accept, whether you will wait for the release and call, and what evidence would make you reduce or abandon the position. Avoid treating a single quarter as proof of a long-term trend when the company’s exposure is affected by settlement timing, hedges, maintenance or project milestones.

Final pre-earnings checklist

  • Latest quarterly and annual filings, release and guidance read in full.
  • Commodity, product, asset, region and customer concentration mapped.
  • Benchmark prices compared with realized prices and contract terms.
  • Provisional pricing and later settlement adjustments identified.
  • Hedge instruments, volumes, maturities and accounting treatment recorded.
  • Revenue, costs, capital spending and debt currencies matched.
  • Production, sales, grades, recoveries, utilization and disruptions compared with prior guidance.
  • Energy, labor, freight, processing and consumable inflation assessed.
  • Sustaining and growth capital separated, with project funding checked.
  • Operating cash flow, working capital, liquidity, maturities, interest and covenants reviewed.
  • Reclamation, closure, lease, logistics and other contractual obligations included.
  • Guidance assumptions and delivery history documented.
  • Adjusted EBITDA and other non-GAAP figures reconciled to reported statements.
  • Valuation expectations and specific thesis-changing outcomes written down before the announcement.

Bottom line

The most useful pre-earnings question is not “Will this materials stock beat estimates?” It is “What physical, contractual and financial assumptions determine this company’s next result, and which of them have changed?” Start with the issuer’s filings, trace benchmark prices through contracts and settlement rules, test volumes and costs, then stress cash and obligations. That company-specific work is more informative than applying a sector-wide commodity rule—and it keeps an uncertain market reaction from being mistaken for an analysis you can control.
