A very low price is a reason to verify a phone offer—not proof that it is either a bargain or a scam. Before paying, identify who will actually sell and support the phone, confirm its model and condition, calculate the full cost, and make sure you have a workable way to resolve a problem.
How can I tell if an online phone seller is legitimate?
Start with the business behind the listing, not just the website or marketplace name. A familiar platform may host an independent seller that sets its own terms, ships the phone, and handles returns or customer service. Check the listing and platform rules to learn who is responsible for each part of the transaction. The Government of Canada’s online shopping guidance explains this distinction.

- Look for a consistent business name, location, and usable contact details. Check whether the seller provides a real way to ask questions or raise a problem.
- Search for recent buyer feedback from more than one source. Star ratings alone are not enough: reviews and ratings can be fake or misleading, the FTC cautions in its marketplace buying guidance.
- Compare the website address with the business name. A similar-looking but misspelled address, missing official contact details, or pressure to buy immediately are reasons to pause, as New Zealand Consumer Protection notes in its online shopping checks.
- Ask the seller any important unanswered questions in writing. Save the replies alongside the listing.
HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and a website; it does not verify that the seller is genuine. As the FTC puts it, “The ‘s’ means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.”
Why is this phone so much cheaper?
Compare the listing with offers for the same model and condition. A price far below comparable offers deserves investigation, but price alone does not establish that a listing is fraudulent. Check whether the phone is new, used, refurbished, or sold “as is”—and whether the listed price excludes shipping or other costs. The FTC and New Zealand Consumer Protection both identify unusually low prices as a warning sign to investigate.

- Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.
Confirm the exact phone and its condition
Read the full description rather than relying on the product title or stock image. Verify the model number, storage capacity, condition, and what is included. If the phone is used or refurbished, look for specific details about its condition; when relevant, ask for photos of the actual item. A low price may reflect a different model, a non-new device, or terms that limit your options if something is wrong.
Calculate the total before comparing
Add delivery and any taxes, duties, exchange-rate costs, or other fees that may apply. For an international order, a private courier or customs broker may also charge fees. Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs warns that these costs vary and that resolving a problem with a foreign vendor can be difficult. Check your own destination’s rules and costs before treating an overseas listing as cheaper.

What should I check about delivery, returns, and refunds?
Read the seller’s terms and the marketplace’s terms before checkout; they may not be the same. Find out what happens if the phone arrives late, is not as described, or never arrives. Do not assume that a familiar platform’s protections cover every seller, purchase, or dispute.

- Delivery: Check the estimated dispatch and arrival dates, shipping method, and who is responsible for fulfillment.
- Returns: Find the return window, who pays return postage, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether the seller accepts returns for a changed mind or only for specific problems.
- Refunds: Confirm how refunds are issued and what process applies if the seller disputes your claim.
- Marketplace protection: Check eligibility, exclusions, and any deadline for opening a dispute. Keep the purchase and payment on the marketplace if you are relying on its protection.
Return rights depend on where you buy and who sells the phone. In the EU, many online product purchases have a 14-day withdrawal right; EU rules also provide a minimum two-year legal guarantee for goods and a minimum one-year guarantee for second-hand goods bought from a professional seller. Details and exceptions apply; see the European Commission’s consumer protection guidance, last updated 16 July 2026. Do not assume these EU rules apply to purchases elsewhere.

In the United States, the FTC says that if a seller has not promised a shipping time, its rule generally requires the seller to ship within 30 days after receiving the relevant order information or payment authorization. This is a US-specific rule, not a universal delivery deadline. The FTC’s online shopping guidance also recommends checking return shipping costs, the return period, and possible restocking fees.
How should I pay for a phone from an unfamiliar retailer?
Choose a payment method with a dispute process, and understand how to use it before paying. If you are counting on marketplace protection, pay through the marketplace rather than moving the transaction elsewhere. Avoid a seller who insists on gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or direct bank payment; these can be difficult to reverse. New Zealand Consumer Protection and the FTC both recommend caution with payment methods that leave buyers little recourse.

Phone-specific checks for buyers in Brazil
Brazil’s telecom regulator Anatel recommends buying from a reliable shop, supplier, or manufacturer and checking the phone’s certification. Its before-you-buy guidance also advises buyers to:
Best Value

Not compatible with Verizon, Xfinity Mobile, Visible, or Spectrum Mobile. Carrier IMEI acceptance, VoLTE, APN settings, and features vary; confirm compatibility before purchase.
- FULL ANDROID 15 GO + GOOGLE PLAY — Download compatible apps from Google Play for messaging, maps, streaming, social media, email, and more. App availability, performance, and requirements vary.
- LARGE 6.745-INCH HD+ DISPLAY — The 720 × 1600 IPS display gives you more room for video, browsing, maps, messages, and everyday apps.

- 8MP CAMERAS + REMOVABLE 4,000mAh BATTERY — Use the 8MP front and rear cameras for photos and video calls. Includes the handset, removable battery, wall charger, USB-C cable, protective case, screen protector, and user manual.
- Compare the IMEI shown on the phone with the number on its box. For a dual-SIM phone, check each IMEI.
- Query the IMEI using Anatel’s tool to check for restrictions, including reports of theft, loss, or misplacement.
- For a phone acquired abroad, check contract limits, carrier restrictions, and compatibility with Brazilian networks.
These are Brazil-specific checks; certification marks, IMEI databases, and consumer rights differ by country. Elsewhere, consult your local telecom regulator, carrier, or the phone manufacturer about approval and network compatibility. Anatel also warns that convincing counterfeits and false invoices can occur, so documentation alone is not a guarantee of authenticity.
Should I buy it, pause, or walk away?
Proceed only when the basics are clear
The seller is identifiable, the exact model and condition are stated, the full cost is known, and you understand delivery, return, refund, and dispute terms. You can pay through a method that gives you a meaningful route to challenge a problem.
Pause and verify when something does not line up
A surprisingly low price, unclear condition, missing fees, sparse recent feedback, or unanswered questions calls for more checking. Ask for written clarification and compare the offer with equivalent phones before deciding.

Walk away if the risk cannot be resolved
- You cannot establish who the seller is or how to contact them.
- The phone’s model, condition, or total price remains unclear.
- Return or refund terms are missing, or responsibility for a marketplace order is uncertain.
- The seller pressures you to act immediately or will accept only a hard-to-reverse payment.
