A big discount is only a good deal if the exact TV fits your room, supports the picture and gaming features you want, and remains affordable after delivery and setup. Before ordering, verify the screen size and model code, compare the specifications that matter to you, and read the seller’s terms for that specific item.
1. Check that the TV fits your room
TV size is measured diagonally, not by the width of the screen. Before choosing a size, measure the space where the set will go and check the listing or manufacturer’s documentation for the TV’s actual width, height, stand footprint, and weight. Make sure there is room for the stand or planned wall mount and for any connected equipment.

Consider viewing distance as well as furniture dimensions: a screen that suits one room may feel overwhelming or too small in another. Consumer NZ advises considering size in relation to the room and viewing distance, and notes that TVs can look smaller in a store than they do at home. Its New Zealand guide offers further sizing advice at How to buy the best TV.
2. Compare resolution and display technology
Resolution
Consumer NZ defines 4K/UHD as 3840 × 2160 pixels. That tells you the pixel count, not how good the entire picture will look; display technology, content, and the particular model also matter. Check that the exact size and model in the sale listing has the resolution you expect.

OLED, LED, and QLED
OLED pixels light individually. LED TVs use a backlight, and QLED adds a quantum-dot layer to an LED-family display. These labels describe different display approaches, but they do not make a sale model automatically the better choice. Compare the exact models and consider the room’s brightness and the kind of viewing you do. Crutchfield explains the distinctions in its TV buying guide.
3. Check HDR support against your content
HDR labels are not interchangeable. Consumer NZ distinguishes HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ and notes that HDR is harder to compare than resolution. Check the formats supported by the TV and by the streaming services, players, or discs you actually use; support on only one side of the connection may not give you the format you expect.
An HDR label alone is not a picture-quality guarantee. Consumer NZ’s TV buying guide explains the formats and the limits of comparing HDR by its label.
4. Match the ports and gaming features to your devices
Write down what you plan to connect, such as a game console, soundbar or receiver, set-top box, and streaming device. Count the HDMI ports you will need, then check the capabilities of the specific ports: a feature listed for the TV may not be available on every HDMI input.
For gaming, verify the native refresh rate and whether the required port supports the features you care about, including 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate (VRR), or auto low latency mode (ALLM). Do not rely on a headline such as “gaming TV” without checking the model’s detailed specifications. Samsung’s UK TV buying guide and LG India’s 2026 TV buying guide discuss refresh and connectivity features; check the documentation for your particular regional model.
5. Confirm the exact model, size, and regional version
Retail listings can group several screen sizes or variants under one product name. Before comparing prices, record the full model code, screen size, product year or generation, and regional variant. Match those details to the manufacturer’s documentation; do not assume that two TVs with nearly identical names have the same panel, refresh rate, resolution, or ports.

6. Work out the full cost and read the seller’s terms
Compare the checkout total, not just the sale label. Account for delivery to the room where the TV will be used, installation, wall mounting if planned, and any separate audio equipment you want. A wall mount is not automatically included or compatible: check the TV’s weight and mount requirements, as well as whether the wall can support the installation. A soundbar may be worth budgeting for if you want separate audio, but it is not essential for every buyer.
Before paying, read the terms attached to that retailer and listing. Check the return period, who pays for return shipping or collection of a large item, warranty coverage, and whether the unit is new, open-box, or refurbished. Those details can change the value of a discount; the rules and terms are not the same in every country or at every retailer. Consumer NZ’s guide discusses possible extra costs at its TV buying guide. For refurbished deals specifically, Tom’s Guide explains why condition, warranty, and return-shipping terms need checking in its OLED deals coverage.
7. Compare two sale TVs on the same checklist
If more than one model fits, compare the specifications and costs that affect your own use rather than choosing by discount percentage. A previous-year model may still suit you: Consumer NZ recommends considering last season’s model when looking for a cheaper TV. Verify its exact identity, features, condition, and seller terms before treating it as a bargain.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Room fit | Actual width, height, stand footprint, weight, and viewing distance. |
| Picture | Resolution, display approach, and HDR formats supported by the TV and your content sources. |
| Gaming | Native refresh rate and the required features on the HDMI ports you plan to use. |
| Connections | Number of HDMI ports and their capabilities for your devices. |
| Purchase terms | Full model code, regional variant, condition, delivery and setup costs, returns, and warranty. |
| Total cost | Checkout price plus any delivery, installation, mount, or optional audio gear you need. |
Consumer NZ’s organizationally authored TV buying guide, updated September 2026, puts the practical risk plainly: “Don’t buy a TV that’s the wrong size or doesn’t have enough ports.” See its guide for the full advice.
