Confirm the RAM, storage capacity, final price, seller and warranty for the specific laptop or phone listing, then decide whether that configuration will suit your needs for as long as you expect to keep it. Memory-supply pressure can lead vendors to cut specifications or raise prices, but it does not make every device a bad buy.
Why memory shortages matter to laptop and phone buyers
Memory affects devices in two different ways. RAM is working memory used while apps and the operating system run; storage is where files, apps and system data are kept. On a laptop, storage is commonly an SSD. On a phone, it is usually built-in flash storage. A listing can have a generous amount of one and less of the other, so check both figures separately.

As of October 2026, industry forecasts describe tight supply and rising component costs. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process capacity for server products, leaving the overall DRAM market undersupplied. It projects conventional DRAM contract prices to increase 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26, and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% over the same period. These are component contract-price forecasts—not predictions that every laptop or phone’s retail price will rise by those amounts. TrendForce’s 2026 outlook

It says mobile DRAM allocations remain tight and rising costs are weighing on smartphone production, while PC brands are reducing SSD capacities in mainstream models to lower bill-of-materials costs. These are market-level observations; they do not establish what is happening to a particular listing.

IDC attributes the shortage in part to rapid demand for AI infrastructure and memory production capacity shifting toward higher-margin products for AI data centers. IDC expects 2026 DRAM supply growth of 16% year over year and NAND supply growth of 17%, both below historical norms. Those figures are expectations, not final measured results. IDC says supply challenges could persist through 2026 and likely well into 2027, with prices remaining elevated; that, too, is a forecast. IDC’s market update
For buyers, the practical risk is a less favorable configuration for a similar price, a higher price for a familiar configuration, or both. IDC says some new phones may arrive with less RAM and storage than comparable prior-year devices at the same or a higher price, and it expects similar configuration reductions in PCs. This describes a potential vendor response, not every new device. IDC’s analysis
That distinction matters when interpreting headlines about a shortage. A rise in component contract prices is not a one-to-one retail price change: TrendForce’s and IDC’s reports do not tell you how a manufacturer, seller or channel will price a specific product, or whether a particular device will be in stock. Likewise, industry reports about reduced mainstream SSD capacities do not mean that every configuration in a model family has been changed. Treat these reports as a reason to inspect a listing, not a substitute for checking it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with the exact listing and SKU
A product-family name is not a specification. The same laptop or phone line can be sold in multiple configurations, and the product page’s headline or starting price may describe a lower-spec version than the one you are considering. Read the configuration on the exact seller listing and verify it against the manufacturer’s specification page for that model and regional variant.
- Find the exact model or SKU. Record the full model identifier, not just the family name. Check that the seller’s listing and the manufacturer’s specifications refer to the same version. A retailer may have several listings that use a similar title; matching the identifier helps avoid comparing one variant’s specifications with another variant’s price.
- Write down the RAM figure. Confirm the amount for that specific configuration. Do not infer it from the product name, an older review, or a family page that lists several options. If a seller’s description and manufacturer page appear inconsistent, resolve which exact version is being offered before treating the figure as confirmed.
- Write down the storage figure. For a laptop, distinguish SSD capacity from RAM. For a phone, confirm built-in storage rather than relying on a general family description. Make sure the value you record belongs to the exact configuration and not to a different variant advertised elsewhere on the page.
- Check the final price for that configuration. Include any configuration upgrade needed to reach the RAM and storage you want. Compare the same seller, condition, warranty and included items when weighing alternatives. A price attached to a base configuration is not a like-for-like comparison with a more capable configuration.
- Verify expansion options if they matter. Check the exact model’s official specifications to see whether storage can be expanded. Do not assume it can; this varies by model, and no particular device’s expandability is established here. If expansion is important to your decision, confirm it before buying rather than basing the choice on a general product-family description.
- Save or capture the listing details. Keeping the model identifier, configuration and price together makes it easier to spot when a seller’s headline offer refers to a different version. It also gives you a consistent reference when comparing another seller or a refurbished/used alternative.
A useful comparison note can be simple: exact identifier; RAM; SSD or built-in storage; price for that configuration; seller; condition; warranty; included items; and whether storage expansion is confirmed. Keep the fields separate. If one listing does not make a detail clear, mark it as unverified rather than assuming it matches another version.
Compare RAM and storage separately
Laptop RAM
RAM is not the same as SSD capacity. A laptop with a large SSD can still have a configuration that does not suit the applications you plan to run, and an advertised RAM figure may not apply to every version of the laptop. Check the precise specification and consider the software and workload you expect to use.
TrendForce’s and IDC’s market reports do not recommend a RAM figure for every buyer. The sources describe market supply and possible configuration changes, not testing of particular laptops or a universal performance threshold. Instead, start with what you actually expect to run and compare the exact RAM amount in each candidate. A specification that suits one person’s light tasks may not suit another person’s applications or workload; the article cannot set a minimum without knowing those needs.
Rank #2
Laptop storage
Compare the SSD capacity for each exact configuration. TrendForce reports that PC brands are reducing SSD capacities in some mainstream models to lower costs, so do not assume that a familiar model name still comes with the capacity shown in an older review or remembered from a previous generation. TrendForce’s outlook
Keep storage capacity distinct from RAM when making a shortlist. If two versions have the same family name, write down the SSD figure attached to each price. If you are considering relying on future expansion, first check the official specifications for the precise model; no cited market report confirms expandability for any particular laptop.
Phone RAM and built-in storage
Check the RAM and built-in storage for the exact phone variant. IDC says some new phones may have less of both than comparable prior-year devices despite carrying the same or a higher price. A phone’s name alone does not establish its configuration. IDC’s analysis
Do not use the amount of built-in storage as a proxy for RAM, or assume that a higher price means a higher memory configuration. The evidence identifies possible changes in both figures, but it does not evaluate individual phones or establish that every generation has been reduced. Compare the actual variants you are considering and the price of each.
Compare candidates on an equal basis
When comparing two or more devices, line up the exact configurations rather than comparing a base model’s advertised price with a higher-spec alternative. A lower sticker price may simply reflect less RAM or storage.
| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Configuration | Exact RAM and storage for each listing, not just the product-family name or advertised starting configuration. |
| Total price | Price for the configuration you would actually buy, from the seller you would use. |
| Seller and terms | Seller, new or refurbished/used condition, warranty and included items. |
| Storage expansion | Expandable or fixed only when the exact model’s official specifications confirm it. |
| Fit for your use | Whether the device suits your applications, workload and expected ownership period. |
Market forecasts cannot tell you whether an individual listing is good value today. IDC and TrendForce describe aggregate supply and pricing conditions, not live retail prices for specific products. Compare current offers for the same configuration and terms rather than applying a forecast percentage to a device’s price.
For example, if two listings advertise the same product-family name, do not assume the lower price is a bargain until you have checked whether the RAM and storage are the same. If one version has less capacity, consider whether it still meets your needs and whether its lower total price makes sense to you. If the specifications do match, differences in seller, condition, warranty and included items still matter. These comparisons do not require a market forecast; they require confirming the actual offers in front of you.

When comparing new with refurbished or second-hand devices, keep condition and terms visible in the comparison instead of treating the lowest price as equivalent to a new listing. Gartner notes that some entry-level buyers may choose refurbished or second-hand phones, but Gartner’s release does not assess any particular used-device offer. It cannot establish that a used option is better value, or provide a model-specific inspection checklist. Compare the exact configuration and stated condition, and weigh the terms offered for that listing.

There is no universal RAM or storage threshold established by the market evidence here. The right configuration depends on your operating system, applications, workload and how long you intend to keep the device. Make a short list of what you need the laptop or phone to do, then judge the exact configuration against those needs. If two listings are otherwise comparable, more capacity may offer flexibility, but it is only useful if the price and the rest of the device make sense for you.
- List the apps, games, files or work tasks you expect to use regularly.
- Consider how long you plan to keep the device and whether your needs are likely to change.
- Check storage expansion on the precise model if you expect to need more space later.
- Compare the full configuration and price, not an upgrade’s headline cost in isolation.
Use the same requirements when judging each candidate. Ask whether the device fits the work you expect to do, whether the listed storage is suitable for the files and apps you plan to keep, and whether the intended ownership period changes what you want from the configuration. The sources do not set a universal answer for these questions, so the buyer’s workload and plans—not a shortage forecast—should determine what capacity is necessary.
Pay closer attention to entry-level offers
IDC says lower-end devices have less room to absorb rising memory costs and could face specification cuts or higher prices. That is a market-level observation, not a rule that every budget laptop or phone is a poor purchase. Inspect the exact listing just as carefully as you would for a more expensive model, and compare what it includes with other offers at the same final price. IDC’s analysis
Gartner’s February 26, 2026 release projected that consumer PC prices would rise 17% and smartphone prices 13% compared with 2025. Gartner also forecast 2026 worldwide PC shipments down 10.4% and smartphone shipments down 8.4%. IDC’s later 2026 forecast update projected declines of 11.3% for PC shipments and 12.9% for smartphone shipments. These are different publishers’ forecasts, issued at different times and using different methods—not observed results or estimates that should be blended together. They describe market scenarios, not the price or availability of a specific device. Gartner’s February 2026 forecast IDC’s later forecast update

These estimates are not a forecast consensus. Gartner and IDC published different figures, and their estimates should be attributed to the publisher and date rather than merged into a single number. Gartner’s projected consumer device price increases and the shipment declines from Gartner and IDC also describe broad markets, not an individual seller’s price. A shopper should not calculate a device’s expected retail price by adding a component forecast or a shipment percentage to its current price.
Gartner quoted Ranjit Atwal, Senior Director Analyst, as forecasting: “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” That is a forecast, not a confirmed future outcome. It should not be treated as proof that every lower-priced PC will disappear or that a current entry-level offer is necessarily poor value. Gartner’s release

Gartner also quoted Atwal as saying, “Overall, device vendors and channels face a critical window in the first half of 2026 to optimize pricing and protect margins before component inflation compresses profitability from the second quarter onwards.” This is an analyst’s market outlook, not a buying deadline or a claim about every product’s price. For an individual buyer, the reliable step remains comparing the exact configuration, current price and terms available now.
Decide whether to buy now or keep your current device
Gartner’s February 2026 release projected longer device lifetimes as prices rise. That makes the condition and usefulness of your current laptop or phone relevant to the decision: if it still meets your needs, you can weigh continuing to use it against the cost of replacing it. It is not a recommendation to delay a replacement you need. Gartner also noted that some entry-level buyers may choose refurbished or second-hand phones; any used offer still needs its own checks for condition, price and terms, and no specific used-device listing is evaluated here. Gartner’s release
There is no timing rule in these forecasts that guarantees prices will fall if you wait, or rise by a set amount if you buy today. IDC’s view that supply challenges could persist through 2026 and likely well into 2027 is a forecast, just as the component-price and shipment estimates are forecasts. If a replacement is necessary, assess the offers that meet your needs now. If it is not urgent and your current device remains useful, continued use is one option to weigh—but the cited forecasts do not predict an individual product’s future availability or price.

- Trusting the model name: a family can include different RAM and storage configurations.
- Using an old review as the listing specification: a review may cover another generation, variant or configuration.
- Confusing RAM with storage: record each capacity separately.
- Comparing base prices with upgraded configurations: compare the final price for the same specification.
- Assuming storage is expandable: verify the precise model’s official specifications first.
- Treating a market forecast as a device price forecast: component costs and shipment projections do not determine the retail price of every product.
- Assuming a budget listing is automatically a bad deal: entry-level products may be exposed to cost pressure, but judge the exact configuration and total price.
- Blending forecasts from different analysts: retain the publisher, date and forecast framing when citing market numbers.
- Assuming a used offer is equivalent to a new one: keep condition, seller, warranty and included items in the comparison.
