Japanese origin—or Japanese voice acting—does not guarantee English text, and details vary from game to game.
Does it support English text and Japanese voice acting?
Steam separates language support into three columns: Interface, Full Audio, and Subtitles. Check each one on the game’s own store page. English interface support does not necessarily mean English subtitles, and Japanese full audio does not establish that any other language is available.

For example, the Steam listing for Kinkoi: Golden Loveriche lists English interface and subtitles, but not English full audio; it lists Japanese in all three categories. By contrast, Silverio Ragnarok says English is unsupported and lists Japanese for interface, full audio, and subtitles. These are title-specific examples, not a guide to every visual novel on Steam.

Read the listing’s mature-content description rather than relying on genre tags, cover art, or assumptions about visual novels. The publisher’s description can help you decide whether the content fits your preferences, but it is not an independent assessment of suitability.

The Kinkoi: Golden Loveriche listing describes kissing and sexual relationships that are discussed but not shown, and says the characters who appear are over 18. The YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story listing discloses mature themes including violence and strong language. Read the specific wording for the game you are considering.
Will it run on your PC?
Compare the selected game’s listed minimum requirements and supported operating systems with your computer. The figures below are examples copied from individual Steam listings, not universal requirements for Japanese visual novels. Store-page minimums do not guarantee performance on every system.

These requirements come from the respective listings and may change. Check the current page before purchase, especially if you use an older operating system, and consider that meeting minimum specs is not a promise of smooth operation on your particular setup.
Is it Steam Deck compatible?
If you plan to play on Steam Deck, check the selected game’s current compatibility label and follow its linked details. The listing for YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story was marked Unsupported in the listing captured for this article. Compatibility is specific to each title and can change; one game’s status says nothing definitive about another game or a different handheld PC.

Does the story format suit you?
Read the description, feature list, and developer notes to see how the game is presented. Look for whether it emphasizes player choices and multiple paths or describes a linear, kinetic story. Check for the specific features you care about, such as achievements or cloud saves, instead of assuming every visual novel offers the same structure or Steam features. The listings for Kinkoi: Golden Loveriche and YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story each provide their own story and feature details.
Is the price and availability current for your region?
Check the game’s Steam page while signed into the account and region you will use to buy it. Displayed price and availability can vary by region and can change over time, so a search result or another buyer’s screenshot may not reflect what you can purchase now. Confirm the edition and what it includes before paying.

Can you refund it if it does not work for you?
Steam’s refund policy, last updated April 23, 2024, generally allows a refund request for games and software within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. The policy also says requests outside those conditions may still be submitted for review; exceptions and other purchase types can have separate terms, and local consumer rights may provide additional protections. A refund is not guaranteed trial access.
To start a request, use Steam’s refund request instructions. Check the live policy for the terms that apply to your purchase.
