A low price can reflect a legitimate close-out, a used or damaged bag, hidden delivery costs, misleading material wording, or a scam. Check the listing, total cost, condition, return route and payment protection in that order, and save the evidence before paying.
Start with this six-part check
Use this checklist before you enter card details. The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance and marketplace guidance support these checks, but your legal rights depend on where you live and who is selling the bag.

1. Check who is selling the handbag
Confirm a reachable seller
Look for a business name, physical or mailing address, customer-service email and telephone number. A marketplace username alone is not enough information to assess who will take responsibility for the order. Check whether the seller’s name, address and policies are consistent across the product page, checkout page and confirmation email.

Search independently for the seller’s name followed by “scam,” “complaint” or “review.” Use results that are not controlled by the seller, and check whether complaints describe the same pattern: goods never shipped, counterfeit merchandise, substituted items or refunds that never arrived. An absence of search results is not proof of legitimacy; it simply means you have less independent information.

Do not treat HTTPS as a trust seal
An address beginning with HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the site. It does not establish that the shop is genuine, that the bag is authentic or that a refund will be honored. Evaluate the seller separately from the security indicator.
Apply a higher standard to an unusually cheap designer bag
A price far below what comparable bags normally cost is a warning sign, particularly when the offer comes from an unfamiliar seller or an advertisement in a social-media feed. It could be a legitimate clearance, but you need an explanation that appears in the listing and can be supported by the seller’s terms. A countdown timer, “50% off for a limited time only” message or rapidly changing stock notice is not evidence of a genuine saving.
The FTC reported that people lost more than $95 million in 2025 to scams that began after they ordered something from a social-media ad, in an alert dated August 10, 2026. That figure covers products generally, not handbags, and the agency says many losses go unreported, so it is not a measure of all losses. FTC Consumer Protection Bureau staff wrote: “That’s because social media platforms don’t always thoroughly vet the ads you see or the advertisers behind them.” Read the alert at consumer.ftc.gov.

Match the exact model
Record the brand, style or model name, dimensions, color, closure, strap arrangement and stated capacity. “Medium” or “large” is not a measurement. Compare the listed height, width and depth with what you need to carry, and check whether dimensions include handles, external pockets or a base that expands.
Find the condition language
Read the title, description, condition field, captions and seller notes together. “Vintage” can describe age or style, not pristine condition. “Used” may involve scuffs, stains, odor, stretched handles or replaced hardware. “Close-out” can mean a discontinued line, missing packaging or a retailer’s final inventory. “As is” may signal that the seller will not correct undisclosed defects. Ask the seller to define any term that is unclear before you buy.

List what is included
Check whether the price includes the original strap, detachable pouch, dust bag, box, receipt, care booklet, lock, keys or other accessories shown in photographs. A picture can show an accessory without the text promising it will ship. Ask for a written confirmation of every item that matters to you.
Require photographs of the actual bag
For a resale or marketplace listing, request well-lit photographs of the exact bag from the front, back, base, corners, handles, interior, lining, label, hardware and any flaws. Stock images are useful for recognizing a style but cannot show wear or prove that the seller has the pictured item. Keep the original images or screenshots in your purchase records.
3. Evaluate material and workmanship claims carefully
Separate material terms from marketing language
Words such as “leather,” “genuine leather,” “suede,” “vegan,” “coated canvas” and “leather trim” describe different things. Find out which parts are made from the stated material: the outer body, trim, handles, lining and strap may not be the same. The FTC’s apparel and labeling resources, including its Apparel and Labeling information and Leather Guides, address truthful descriptions for leather goods, including handbags.
Those guides concern accurate labeling; they are not a remote authentication service or a grade of durability. A compliant material description still does not tell you whether a particular bag is well made, comfortable or worth the asking price.
Inspect construction in photographs
- Look for even stitching and seams that lie flat rather than wavering, bunching or stopping abruptly.
- Check corners, edge paint, glazing, rivets, zipper tracks and handle attachments for visible cracking, gaps or corrosion.
- Compare logo placement, type, hardware shape and lining details with reliable images of the same model, while remembering that one visual cue cannot establish authenticity.
- Ask about repairs, replaced parts, odors, peeling, water damage and previous storage if the listing does not address them.
UK Intellectual Property Office guidance for second-hand fashion recommends comparing the photos and description and examining stitching, seams, materials and logo placement. These are warning checks, not a guarantee that a bag is genuine. Read the UK guidance at GOV.UK.

4. Work out the price you will actually pay
Calculate the delivered total
Before deciding that a discount is good, add the item price, shipping, handling, delivery insurance, sales tax or VAT, marketplace fees and any import or currency-conversion charge shown at checkout. Note whether the displayed shipping price applies only to a slower service, a minimum order or a particular destination. Save the final checkout screen.
Compare the same model, size, color and condition wherever possible. If you compare a new bag with a used one, or a complete set with a bag missing its strap, the percentage discount is not an apples-to-apples measure. A crossed-out “regular” price and a large discount percentage do not, by themselves, prove that the current total is good value.
Check conditions attached to the discount
Look for membership requirements, coupon codes, minimum spend, nonrefundable shipping, payment deadlines or an automatic subscription. Confirm whether the discount applies to the exact color and size you want rather than to a different item in the same collection. If the seller will not disclose the conditions before payment, stop and ask for them in writing.
5. Use a like-for-like comparison when several listings look similar
Build a short comparison rather than sorting by discount percentage. Record differences that can outweigh the markdown.

| Protection | Does the platform offer a documented process for an item not received, counterfeit or misdescribed? |
State the differences rather than treating one listing as the “best deal.” A lower price can be reasonable when condition or included accessories differ, while stronger return or buyer protection can justify paying more.

6. Extra checks for second-hand and resale handbags
Ask targeted questions before making an offer
Ask when and where the seller bought the bag, whether it has been repaired, how it was stored, and whether all flaws are pictured. Request close-ups of the serial or date marking, label, stitching, logo placement and hardware when those details exist for the model. Do not send unnecessary identity documents or move the conversation to an unprotected payment channel just because a seller asks.
Interpret counterfeit statistics correctly
The UK Intellectual Property Office said in 2026 that one in four second-hand clothing buyers had purchased a counterfeit item online in the previous year without knowing. The statistic concerns second-hand clothing generally, not handbags alone. It demonstrates why verification matters, but it does not classify any particular listing as counterfeit.
Use platform protections without assuming they are automatic
Read the marketplace’s eligibility rules, claim deadline, required evidence and exclusions before paying. Some programs require that you keep the transaction on-platform, use an approved payment method or report a problem within a stated period. A platform label or seller assertion is not a substitute for reading those conditions.

Find the operational details
- Count the return deadline from the event the policy specifies, such as delivery or purchase.
- Check who pays return shipping and whether the seller supplies a label.
- Look for restocking, authentication or handling fees.
- Confirm whether clearance, personalized, used or “final sale” items are excluded.
- Check the required condition: tags attached, packaging retained, unused or shipped with tracking.
- Find out when and how the refund is issued and whether original shipping is refundable.
Save the policy as a PDF or screenshot because a sale page can change after checkout. Save the product page, seller details, receipt, order confirmation and every message in one folder.
Distinguish a voluntary change-of-mind return from legal rights
A retailer’s sale-return policy is a contract term it chooses to offer. Legal rights for a faulty or misdescribed item, or for an online purchase you do not want, vary by jurisdiction, seller location and transaction type. The UK government explains UK rules in Accepting returns and giving refunds: the law; the European Commission summarizes protections for purchases in the EU at Protecting you when buying online. Neither page creates a universal rule for shoppers elsewhere. Check the law that applies to your address and the seller, and do not assume a “sale” label removes every statutory remedy or guarantees a change-of-mind return.

8. Choose payment with a realistic recourse path
The FTC recommends credit cards where possible for online shopping and warns against payment methods that are difficult to reverse. Use the payment method covered by the marketplace’s protection policy, keep the transaction on the platform and avoid direct transfers, gift-card payments, cryptocurrency or any method the seller insists on that leaves no practical dispute route.
Before paying, find your card issuer’s dispute process and time limits. Keep proof of the listing, promised condition, delivery and your attempts to contact the seller. A dispute is not guaranteed to succeed, and marketplace protections may have separate deadlines, so report a missing, counterfeit or misdescribed bag promptly.
9. What to do when the offer came from social media
- Do not rely on the advertisement’s “Shop now” link. Open a new browser tab and search the seller’s name independently.
- Search the name with “scam” and “complaint,” and compare contact details with the checkout page.
- Check the seller’s return and shipping pages before entering payment information.
- Save the advertisement, landing page, product description and price in case the page disappears.
- If the seller pressures you to pay outside the platform or refuses ordinary questions about condition and returns, leave the transaction.
Social-media placement is distribution, not endorsement. The FTC’s 2026 alert explains that platforms do not always thoroughly vet the ads or advertisers behind them.

10. Save these records before clicking Buy
- Product title, URL, photographs and the full description
- Sale price, crossed-out reference price and the final checkout total
- Shipping method, delivery estimate, taxes and every fee
- Seller name, address, contact information and marketplace profile
- Return, refund, warranty and buyer-protection terms
- Receipt, order confirmation, tracking number and payment record
- Your questions, the seller’s answers and any promises about condition or accessories
Use screenshots that show the date or retain downloaded files with a clear filename. If a dispute arises, this record connects what was advertised with what you paid for and gives the card issuer or marketplace concrete evidence to review.
A practical stop-or-buy decision
Proceed when the evidence lines up
Proceed only when you can identify the seller, match the exact bag to clear photographs and a complete description, calculate the delivered total, understand the return route and pay through a method with recourse. Keep the records before checkout.
Pause and ask for clarification
Pause when dimensions, materials, accessories, condition or fees are missing but the seller is reachable. Ask specific questions and require answers in the platform’s message system. Do not treat silence, vague assurances or a copied stock photograph as confirmation.
Walk away when key facts cannot be verified
Walk away when the seller is unidentifiable, the price is implausibly low without an explanation, the listing refuses actual-item photos, payment must bypass the platform, or the return and dispute terms are unavailable. Losing a discount is less costly than paying for a bag you cannot verify or return.
