Start with the exact claim in the lot description
Record the catalogue’s wording: game-worn, game-used, game-issued, team-issued, player-worn, warm-up worn, or event-worn. Ask the auction house what that category means for this item and whether it asserts actual competitive use. These terms should not be treated as interchangeable.

Game-issued is not game-worn
A jersey can be prepared, customized, or made available for a player without evidence that the player wore it in competition. Correct tags, sizing, customization, or period details may support consistency with a player or season, but do not by themselves show that it saw game action. Learn more about the distinction between game-worn and game-issued items.
Verify identifiers with the relevant league or team
Use the issuing authority’s record where one exists; do not rely only on a sticker or certificate. MLB says its authentication program covers eligible items an authenticator witnessed being signed or used. For authenticated items, the hologram’s prefix and serial number can be checked in MLB’s database. MLB reports that the program has authenticated more than six million items in total; that figure is not specific to jerseys. Check MLB’s Authentication Program information and database.

For an MLB jersey, inspect the hologram on the item and confirm that the database record corresponds to the item being offered. MLB distinguishes its authentication holograms from other licensing identifiers, and a “Team Issued” designation is not intended to establish use. Read what the record actually says rather than inferring game use from the presence of an MLB-related label.
For another sport or league, look for its own official lookup or documentation process. There is no single cross-sport database established here, and MLB’s system does not apply beyond MLB.
Ask for the provenance behind the lot
Request a written account of how the jersey left the team, league, player, or previous owner, and what records support each step. Look for a team or league record, original purchase or transfer documentation, a named authenticator’s report, or other contemporaneous evidence. Check dates, player, team, event, patches, and season details for consistency.

A certificate is one piece of evidence, not a substitute for understanding its scope. Find out what the issuer actually examined or witnessed, and whether the conclusion covers authenticity, player association, or use in a particular game. Do not treat an authentication opinion as proof of game use unless its stated scope supports that conclusion.
Examine any photomatch and its evidence
Photomatching compares identifiable features on the physical jersey with photographs or video of an athlete wearing it during a particular game or period. Ask to see the reference image, the corresponding area on the jersey, and the explanation of the match points. A generic resemblance is not enough.
What makes a match persuasive?
Look for individual details visible both in the item and the reference material: a loose thread, stitching irregularity, fold or deformation, mesh pattern, puckering around lettering, stain, repair, wear mark, or distinctive patch or number alignment. The conclusion depends on how many features can be identified and how clearly they appear. Camera angle, lighting, motion, obstruction, and image resolution can make a comparison inconclusive. Authentication and photomatching are related but distinct. Authentication may assess construction, tags, materials, customization, provenance, and period consistency; photomatching attempts to connect this particular object to photographic or video evidence.
Inspect the jersey and compare it with the description
Compare the physical item and catalogue images with the lot description. Note alterations, repairs, replacement patches or numbers, laundering, stains, damage, and areas not shown. Ask whether the described wear is documented as game wear or is simply an observation about condition. A clean jersey is not automatically unused, and a worn-looking jersey is not automatically game-worn.
If the photos or inspection access are limited, ask for additional images and written answers before bidding closes. Preserve the catalogue description and the auction house’s replies so you can refer to the exact claims and representations later.

Read the auction terms and calculate your full commitment
Before placing a bid, review the buyer’s premium and other fees, taxes, shipping, payment deadline, inspection opportunities, and the process for challenging authenticity or provenance. Find the deadline for notice, what evidence is required, whether an independent expert opinion is necessary, and what remedy may be available.
Heritage Auctions’ terms illustrate why the details matter: its sports collectibles provisions set written deadlines for certain challenges, describe expected evidence, state that contrary authentication opinions may not be recognized, and limit potential remedies. The terms also say that bidders are responsible for reaching their own conclusion before bidding. The applicable rules depend on the sale and lot, so read the current terms that govern the specific item. Read Heritage Auctions’ buyer terms.

Check program-specific promises against the individual lot
Program language can be useful, but it is not a substitute for the lot record. The NBA’s official page says jerseys sold through the NBA & Sotheby’s Game Worn Program are photomatched unless otherwise stipulated. It also says NBA Auctions is expected to resume in the first week of the 2026–27 season and that the partnership will offer game-worn jerseys during that season. Those schedule and inventory statements were current as of October 4, 2026, and may change. Check whether an exception applies to the specific lot and what documentation accompanies it. See the NBA Auctions program information.
Other programs have their own processes. For example, the LA Clippers announced MatchWornShirt as an official digital auction partner for game-worn jerseys in March 2026, describing microchip verification and Fabricks certification. That announcement concerns one team’s program; it is not a general standard for other teams, sports, or auction houses. Read the Clippers’ announcement.
