The Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition is not a complete computer in the box. Before ordering, confirm the generation, processor, memory, SSD, Expansion Cards, operating system, charger, stylus and keyboard options in your exact cart. The current 2026 model uses Intel Core Series 3 processors; separate 2025 13th Gen configurations may still appear in some regions, and their memory limits and accessory details differ.
It is a 12.2-inch touchscreen convertible designed for owners who value documented repair and modular ports. That flexibility is useful only if you are willing to select compatible parts, assemble the machine and pay for the configuration you actually need.

1. Identify the exact Laptop 12 generation first
Framework’s current product information includes a 2026 Laptop 12 with Intel Core Series 3 options and separate 2025 configurations using 13th Gen Intel processors. Treat them as different platforms when checking specifications. Memory speed, maximum capacity, included accessories and processor performance must match the generation shown in your cart.

2025 13th Gen configuration
The quick-start material for the 13th Gen variant lists up to 48 GB of DDR5-5200 when you supply your own memory. Do not carry the 2026 limits or speeds into a 2025 order. If both generations are offered in your region, read the processor name and the memory wording in the specific configuration rather than relying on a generic Laptop 12 description.
Why the generation check changes your budget
A memory module, SSD, charger or accessory that fits one listing may not be the part described for another. Save a copy of the final configuration page or invoice, including the generation and processor, before buying parts separately. Framework’s own validated-memory list should be the authority for the exact model you select.
2. Understand what “DIY Edition” leaves for you to provide
The DIY listing has no operating system preinstalled. Memory, storage, Expansion Cards, the power adapter and stylus can be configurable or optional, so the product name alone does not tell you whether the machine is ready to boot.
Core components to verify
| Item | What the current information says | What to confirm before payment |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | No OS is preinstalled on the listed DIY configuration. | Whether you will purchase and install Windows 11 Home or Pro, or install a compatible Linux distribution. |
| Memory | One SO-DIMM slot; generation-specific capacity and speed. | Whether a module is included, its capacity, and its validated speed for your processor. |
| Storage | One M.2 2230 NVMe slot; Framework lists storage choices up to 2 TB or a buyer-supplied drive. | Whether an SSD is in the cart and that any separate drive is the 2230 form factor. |
| Expansion Cards | Four user-selectable positions. | Which connector is installed in each position and whether it covers your displays, USB-A devices, network and card-reader needs. |
| Power adapter | A 60 W USB-C adapter is optional for the current Core Series 3 DIY specification. | Whether the charger is included in this exact configuration. |
| Stylus | Sold separately; the display supports MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0. | Whether pen input matters to you and whether you are buying a compatible stylus independently. |
Do not assume that a memory module, SSD, charger or stylus is included because the chassis supports it. The cart’s box-contents and option lines are the controlling information.
3. Check the physical design against your work
The Laptop 12 is a convertible with a 12.2-inch 16:10 LCD touchscreen. Framework lists 1920×1200 resolution, a 60 Hz refresh rate, brightness greater than 400 nits, 50% NTSC gamut, a 50 Wh battery and a 1.3 kg weight. These are vendor specifications, not independent benchmark results.
Convertible format
The hinge lets you use the machine as a conventional laptop or fold it for touch and pen-oriented use. That makes the small display useful for travel, handwritten notes and presentations, but it also means you should inspect the keyboard, hinge feel and tablet-style ergonomics in person or through a return policy if those are decisive. The supplied material does not establish a hinge-life rating or guaranteed service life.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Display expectations
1920×1200 provides a 16:10 work area rather than a 16:9 panel. The listed brightness above 400 nits can help in bright rooms, while 50% NTSC indicates a modest color gamut rather than a display aimed at wide-gamut creative work. At 60 Hz, this is a standard-refresh productivity panel, not a high-refresh gaming screen.
Recommended Free Tools
Graphics and battery scope
Framework lists integrated Intel graphics and a 50 Wh battery. There is no independent battery-runtime or graphics benchmark in the available evidence, so choose the Laptop 12 for its size and modular design rather than assuming a particular gaming frame rate or all-day runtime.
4. Choose a processor without mistaking specifications for benchmarks
The 2026 page offers the Core 3 304, Core 5 320 and Core 7 350. A higher model name may be appropriate for heavier multitasking, compiling or other sustained workloads, but the supplied specifications do not provide independent benchmark numbers. Compare the processor choice with your actual workload and total cart cost, not with an assumed performance percentage.
Light productivity
Web applications, office work, streaming and note-taking generally place more emphasis on sufficient memory and storage than on selecting the highest listed processor. Keep enough budget for an SSD, charger and the Expansion Cards you will actually use.
Development and demanding multitasking
Large builds, virtual machines and sustained data work can justify considering a higher Core Series 3 option, but integrated graphics and the compact chassis remain part of the platform. The current information does not establish a thermal or sustained-performance advantage for one option, so seek model-specific independent testing if that is your main buying criterion.

Memory is the easiest DIY component to get wrong because Framework’s product page and quick-start guide describe several variants with different figures. The 2026 Core Series 3 specifications list one SO-DIMM slot, up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 support and a configuration option up to 48 GB DDR5-5600. The quick-start guide’s own-memory note also lists up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 for Core Series 3, while its 13th Gen note lists up to 48 GB DDR5-5200.

Use the validated list, not a generic DDR5 search
- Identify the processor generation in your cart.
- Open Framework’s validated-memory information for that generation.
- Match the module’s capacity, DDR5 type and supported operating speed.
- Check whether the cart already includes memory before ordering another module.
- Keep the packaging and proof of purchase until the system passes a memory test.
Because there is one SO-DIMM slot, you cannot add a second module later to create a two-slot configuration. Decide whether the included or selected capacity is enough for the machine’s expected life before closing the order.
6. Verify the SSD form factor and installation plan
The Laptop 12 has one M.2 2230 NVMe slot. Framework lists storage choices up to 2 TB or lets you bring your own drive. A common M.2 drive in a longer 2242 or 2280 format is not automatically interchangeable with a 2230 slot, so confirm the length as well as capacity and interface.
If you select storage in the order
Check the capacity shown in the final cart and record whether the drive is supplied installed or separately packaged. Make sure it is large enough for the operating system, applications, updates and local files you expect to keep.
If you supply your own SSD
Buy an M.2 2230 NVMe drive, not merely a drive described as “M.2.” Install it during the hardware setup before installing Windows or Linux. Keep a backup of any existing data; the installation process may require initialization or repartitioning.
7. Map the four Expansion Card positions to your devices
The four Expansion Card slots are modular, but they are not identical in capability. The upper-left and upper-right positions list Thunderbolt 4 in addition to USB-C, USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode. The lower two positions support USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB Power Delivery. Select cards by position as well as by connector shape.
Available card types
Framework lists USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, 250 GB and 1 TB storage cards, MicroSD and SD options. A card can change the laptop’s everyday usefulness, so write down every peripheral you plan to connect:

- External monitors and docks: verify which upper position provides the required DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 path.
- Legacy accessories: include enough USB-A cards rather than relying on adapters.
- Wired networking: select Ethernet if you need a cable connection for work, setup or troubleshooting.
- Photography and removable media: choose MicroSD or SD according to the cards you actually use.
- Extra storage: distinguish the 250 GB and 1 TB storage-card capacities from the internal M.2 SSD.
A practical port-planning method
- List the connectors you need simultaneously, not just occasionally.
- Assign video or high-bandwidth devices to the upper positions where the listed Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort Alt Mode support is available.
- Use lower positions for USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB-PD needs that do not require those upper-slot functions.
- Check the card names and quantities in the cart; an empty slot is not an included connector.
8. Account for the operating-system work
The listed DIY configuration arrives without an operating system. Framework’s installation material places memory, storage and Wi-Fi installation before Windows 11 Home or Pro installation.
Windows 11 plan
Budget for a Windows license if you do not already have one, create installation media, install the hardware first and then complete Windows setup, drivers and updates. Confirm that your license type can be transferred or activated on the new machine before relying on it.
Linux plan
Linux users should check Framework’s current distribution and kernel-compatibility information for the exact release they intend to run. The current product page says its recommended Linux distributions are compatible with kernel 7.1 and newer. Distribution support changes over time, so verify the recommendation when you order and test sleep, touch, pen input, audio, Wi-Fi, camera and external displays rather than assuming every feature behaves identically across distributions.
9. Plan the assembly realistically
Framework labels DIY assembly as moderate and estimates 10–20 minutes. Its quick-start guide presents an 18-step setup. That is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a guaranteed time for every buyer; first-time builders, unfamiliar screwdrivers or troubleshooting can make the process longer.
Core setup sequence
- Prepare a clean, static-safe work surface and the required tools.
- Open the package and verify the chassis, selected cards and any separately packed components.
- Follow the guide to open the laptop without forcing clips or cables.
- Install the SO-DIMM memory module in the correct orientation.
- Install the M.2 2230 NVMe SSD and secure it as shown in the guide.
- Install the Wi-Fi module if it is supplied separately in your configuration.
- Fit the selected Expansion Cards in their assigned positions.
- Reconnect and close the chassis, checking that no cable is trapped.
- Connect a compatible USB-C power source if the 60 W adapter was not included.
- Power on, enter firmware settings if necessary and confirm that memory and storage are detected.
- Install Windows 11 or your chosen Linux distribution.
- Apply firmware, driver and operating-system updates, then test every port, the touchscreen, hinge, speakers, camera, wireless connection and pen input if applicable.
Do not judge the assembly solely by the 10–20-minute estimate. The important result is a correctly detected drive, stable memory and a complete functional check before the return window expires.
10. Treat the charger and stylus as separate purchase decisions
Power adapter
The current Core Series 3 DIY specification lists a 60 W USB-C adapter as optional. If it is absent, include a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger in your total. Verify the charger’s output and cable before the first boot; a phone charger may not provide the required power.
Best Value
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 12" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.

Pen input
The touchscreen supports MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0, but Framework lists the stylus separately. Choose a pen that explicitly supports one of those protocols and confirm the features you need, such as pressure sensitivity or buttons. Protocol compatibility does not mean every stylus offers identical behavior, and no stylus should be assumed to be included.
11. Select the keyboard and security options deliberately
Check the keyboard language and backlighting choice in the cart. Also check whether an optional fingerprint reader is selected if biometric login matters to you. These are easy to overlook because they are not part of the CPU, memory or storage headline, yet changing them after delivery may be less convenient than choosing correctly at checkout.
12. Weigh repairability against the actual trade-offs
Framework positions the product with the slogan, “You don’t own it until you can repair it.” The company provides step-by-step repair and upgrade guides, a Marketplace for modules and replacement parts, and a DIY setup guide. Those resources support the practical ability to assemble and replace documented components.

They do not guarantee a particular service life, future parts availability or savings compared with replacing a conventional laptop. Modularity has value when you will use it: replacing a damaged port card, upgrading storage or servicing a documented component. If you do not intend to maintain the machine, you may pay for flexibility you never use.
What independent testing says—and does not say
RTINGS describes the Laptop 12 as a niche choice for buyers who value maintaining and upgrading a small, flexible computer. Its review identifies trade-offs in performance, display, battery life, chassis feel and upfront value compared with mainstream alternatives. That review covers the 2025 model, not the 2026 Core Series 3 processor configuration, so its measured or observed conclusions must not be presented as tests of the newer CPU options.
13. Calculate the complete price, not the bare chassis price
No universal configured price can be stated because Framework’s total changes with generation, processor, memory, SSD, Expansion Cards, keyboard, fingerprint reader, operating system, charger and stylus. Build a total-cost worksheet before comparing the Laptop 12 with another compact laptop.
| Cost line | Include it when |
|---|---|
| Base DIY system | Always; record the exact generation and processor. |
| Memory | The cart does not include the capacity you need or you are supplying your own validated module. |
| M.2 2230 SSD | No internal drive is included, or the selected capacity is insufficient. |
| Expansion Cards | Every connector you need must be represented by a selected card. |
| 60 W USB-C charger | The cart marks the adapter optional or excludes it. |
| Windows license | You need Windows 11 Home or Pro and do not already have an eligible license. |
| Stylus | You plan to use pen input and do not already own a compatible MPP 2.0 or USI 2.0 pen. |
| Shipping, tax and replacement parts | Use the charges shown for your region and allow for any separately ordered component. |
Compare this configured total with alternatives of similar size and capability. RTINGS’ value criticism applies to its reviewed 2025 edition and should be treated as context, not a price claim about every 2026 configuration.

- Generation is identified as 2026 Core Series 3 or 2025 13th Gen.
- Processor name is recorded: Core 3 304, Core 5 320, Core 7 350 or the selected 13th Gen option.
- Memory is included or a validated module is planned for that generation.
- Memory capacity and operating speed match the exact product information.
- An M.2 2230 NVMe SSD is included or budgeted separately.
- All four Expansion Card positions are intentional, with video, USB-A, Ethernet and card-reader requirements covered.
- Upper-slot Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort Alt Mode needs are accounted for.
- A 60 W USB-C adapter is confirmed or added separately.
- Windows licensing and installation media, or a Linux distribution plan, are ready.
- Keyboard language, backlighting and fingerprint-reader choices are correct.
- A compatible stylus is included in the plan if pen input is required.
- The complete configured total is compared with competing compact laptops.
- You have time and a suitable workspace for moderate DIY assembly and post-install testing.
15. Who should buy the DIY Edition?
It makes sense when
- You want a small convertible and will use modular ports, replaceable components or future upgrades.
- You are comfortable installing memory, an SSD and Wi-Fi, then installing your own operating system.
- You can verify compatibility instead of buying generic parts by appearance alone.
- You accept that the final cost may rise after adding ports, storage, power and software.
Look elsewhere when
- You need a ready-to-use computer with an operating system and charger included by default.
- You require proven high-end graphics, a high-refresh display, exceptionally long battery life or a specific color-gamut target.
- You do not want to troubleshoot hardware detection, drivers or Linux device support.
- The configured price is higher than a conventional compact laptop that already meets your needs.
The right purchase is therefore the exact cart that satisfies your workload and port map, not simply the highest processor or the lowest advertised starting configuration.
